Was considered for the Foreign Office, but Bryce was appointed, and for the Colonies, but this post was given to Osborne Morgan by Gladstone 'as a compliment to Wales & to an old colleague' .... 'So you see I have had a narrow shave and I am very well pleased. This will be a troubled and a short Administration. No doubt I am losing what is probably my only chance of office.' Has taken 4 Whitehall Gardens. Is much grieved at the state of Mackenzie's affairs. Was pleased to receive news of George Wightwick Rendel from Brassey, who has been promised a Peerage.

Visit of the Farrars. Lina's health. Is sorry to hear the bad news of Clement Wedgwood. Renovations at home. Cannot now invite Mr Gladstone to stay. Sir J. D. Hay visited for the Italian Naval Review, 'a very brilliant & successful affair', much more impressive than the review at Spithead for the Queen's Jubilee. The situation at Poggnoli is much improved although, 'The correspondence between Elswick & the Italian Govt & ourselves leaves much to be desired'.
