O[ ] Lewis, 52 Claire Street, Manselton, Swansea. Was very surprised when he heard Huw T. Edwards on the radio announcing his resignation from the Chairmanship and from membership of the Council for Wales and Monmouthshire. First thought that Huw T. Edwards was abandoning the battle, but now realises differently. He can devote his energies to something that will prove of more benefit to Wales which is being belittled by the government. Personally, the writer does not possess enough moral courage to be a nationalist and a pacifist. Hopes that Huw T. Edwards will have enough courage to withstand future revolt and opposition. Welsh.

William [ ], Bryn Mair, Penmaenpool, Dolgellau. Has been listening to Huw T. Edwards on the radio and reading in the newspapers his report outlining the reasons for his resignation. It required extraordinary courage and resolution to resign such an important post out of principle. Congratulations on the great work which he undertook as Chairman; it is not his fault that the work has not been put into practice. It will be a great loss to the Council to be deprived of its leader. The London civil service has been given a hard knock, and it is to be hoped that a healthier spirit will emanate from Whitehall in the future. All Welshmen are solid in their support of him. Would much like to see Huw T. Edwards. Welsh.

J. Wyn Evans, Bugeilfod, Llangwm, Corwen. Congratulations! Has always thought highly of Huw T. Edwards, but recently his opinion is higher than ever. Many throughout Wales share this view. Huw T. Edwards has displayed courage and a readiness to fight and to suffer in the battle. Huw T. Edwards is undoubtedly seen at his best as a rebel. What is the next step to be? Is a new political party to be born? Can well recall Huw T. Edwards's threat to form a party which would be a marriage of the patriotism of Plaid Cymru and the Socialism of the Labour Party. In view of the failure of the former to appeal to ordinary people, and the folly of the latter in relation to Wales, has not the time now arrived? The writer has himself received nothing but a succession of disappointments from these two parties, and he will be in a real quandary who to support at the next election. Eagerly awaits inspiration from Huw T. Edwards. In this crisis he should demonstrate that he has the qualities of the true leader. He should hasten to visit them. Welsh.

Sir George [Hamer], Summerfield Park, Llanidloes. Was very interested to read Huw T. Edwards's explanation of the circumstances which compelled him to resign as Chairman of the Council for Wales - 'a well reasoned first class document written in moderate terms'. Congratulates him both on his published statement and on his courageous action. Wishes that the whole of the membership of the Council had followed suit, so that the Prime Minister could not fail to recognise the resentment and frustration of the Welsh people. Huw T. Edwards's resignation is the current topic of conversation in all the circles in which the writer has moved recently. Everyone approves of his action and admires his courage. Would like to meet Huw T. Edwards in the near future, perhaps at Gee's meeting.

Lloyd Hughes, Belle Vue Hotel, Bangor. Although the writer does not know Huw T. Edwards personally and has never met him, he feels obliged to write to express his admiration and thanks to him for his firm stand on the national rights of Wales at all times, and especially during recent days. Hopes that he can continue the battle and achieve success. Welsh.

Cyril [Jones], Solicitor, 17 Egerton Street, Wrexham. A thousand congratulations on Huw T. Edwards's stand on behalf of Wales against the oppressors of Whitehall. When the Council for Wales was established, the writer considered it a 'sham', a 'smoke screen' or 'facade', designed to hoodwink the Welsh people. He, therefore, refused to become one of its members. But he does believe that the Council has done excellent work in discussing the problems of Wales and in sending reports to the government. Is sorry to have to say that he believes Herbert Morrison to be behind the present plan because he is so opposed to a measure of devolution for Wales. The Labour Party has been pledged to home rule for Wales ever since 1916-17, but when it had a majority government at Westminster, it forgot its promises. The writer has been surprised at the way the Labour Party has cast aside the basic principles of Socialism, especially the nationalisation of land - something which is essential if the farmers are to enjoy security of tenure. Avaricious land owners like Michael Wynn at Corwen and Naylor Leyland at Llanelidan are taking advantage of the law to expand their holdings. Is glad that Huw T. Edwards will be at Wrexham on 21 November to speak on his trip to America. Will be honoured to chair that meeting, and can assure Huw T. Edwards that the room will be packed. Welsh.

Hubert [ ], Groeswen, Penrhosgarnedd, Bangor. Huw T. Edwards's recent courageous action only confirms the 'image' of him which his friends already held. His action is such as one normally associates with the great leaders of a bye-gone age. It is likely that a dramatic change in the attitude of the Government towards Wales will ensue, although it is sure to camouflage the motive force behind the change. The writer sensed the frustration which Huw T. Edwards experienced as chairman during recent years, and his decision to remain in post during these difficult times was a reflection of his stature. Considered the BBC sound interview of the previous day to have been most successful. It is abundantly clear that Huw T. Edwards's action was right and will be a genuine turning point in Welsh life.

Penry [ ], Glasllwch House, Newport, Monmouthshire. Huw T. Edwards's decision came as a great shock to the writer, but he feels sure that he has acted rightly. Huw T. Edwards will recall that he has promised to toast the sheriff at the Sheriff's Luncheon. The recipient will be honoured at the luncheon by all the chairmen and town clerks of the UDCs in Monmouthshire.

[D. J. James, Pantyfedwen], Sutton Hall, Barcombe, Sussex. Was disappointed, but not surprised, to hear of Huw T. Edwards's resignation from the Panel. Huw T. Edwards should not allow this to diminish his enthusiasm for Wales. He will continue the good work which he has done in the past. The writer is still on the sick list, but is somewhat improved, and may be able to make it to London before the end of the year.

C. C. Davies, Town Clerk of the Borough of Pwllheli, Municipal Buildings, Penlan Street, Pwllheli. A recent meeting of the Council referred to Huw T. Edwards's recent resignation as Chairman of the Council for Wales and Monmouthshire in the wake of the Government's rejection of the repeated demand by the Council for the appointment of a Secretary of State for Wales. The Pwllheli Borough Council unanimously resolved to pay tribute to Huw T. Edwards for his invaluable services to Wales, especially his stand on this current issue.

[H.] Leighton [Davies], Assistant Managing Director, The Steel Company of Wales Ltd, Carmarthen Road, Swansea. Has read much in the press about Huw T. Edwards recently, and realises that he must have good reason to resign. Admires his courage, and knows that Huw T. Edwards will continue to render public service actively and honestly in future.

Edward H. [Ted] Spanswick, 43 Queens Road, Casgwent [Chepstow]. Jo Grimond recently asserted that both the Labour and Tory parties were nationalist, but, of course, he meant English nationalist! There is a need for a Labour Party of Wales. Huw T. Edwards would indeed be best placed to announce the launch of such a party.

Rev. Boaz R. Williams, 8 Arundel Road, Oswestry, Secretary of Cymanfa Bedyddwyr Dinbych, Fflint a Meirion. The half-yearly meeting of the Gymanfa asked the writer to convey to Huw T. Edwards the enclosed resolution passed unanimously at the conference on 18 November (not attached). Welsh.

D. J. Williams, 49 High Street, Fishguard. Having read Huw T. Edwards's full statement of the reasons for his resignation from the Chairmanship of the Council for Wales and Monmouthshire, the writer feels impelled to congratulate him on it. It is the statement of both a leader and a strategist. Huw T. Edwards has indeed chosen the most appropriate moment to strike a blow at Harold Macmillan and his followers. It will give a powerful shake-up even to a nation as tame as the Welsh. Hopes that the Conference which Huw T. Edwards proposes will be a distinct success. Welsh.

Nellie [Jones], Hafod, Ruthin, Denbighshire. They consider Huw T. Edwards's friendship to be especially precious. Was very upset when [Sir] William [Jones] returned home from the last meeting of the Council: 'In all our ups and downs I have never seen him look so grey and disappointed'. Is sure that Sir William had not anticipated Huw T. Edwards's resignation on that day, although Huw T. Edwards feels that he did warn him. Hopes to see Huw T. Edwards soon.

[W.] Emrys [Pride], 4 Mitre Place, Llandaff, Cardiff. Regrets the resignations of Huw T. Edwards and Sir William Jones from the Council for Wales and Monmouthshire. The body was the writer's own creation which he had intended would be a research body and a Treasury Watchdog. But believes that more frequent changes of personnel would be to the good of the Council and other councils. Many well-intentioned people are prepared to assist in the running of voluntary organisations. It might be beneficial to have a Minister as Chairman on a temporary basis. Considers Henry Brooke to be 'a man of decent principles'.

[ ] Swancot. Has to write as three minutes on the telephone would not be sufficient to thank the new Owain Glyndr of Wales. Huw T. Edwards's resignation is the most sensational, most hopeful event which has occurred in twentieth century Wales. Huw T. Edwards has become the hero of the whole of Wales. Pleads with Huw T. Edwards to retain all his correspondence for the writer to read. Much regrets his decision to go to the Continent the very time the dawn was breaking for Wales. Hopes to meet Huw T. Edwards during the first week of September. The writer is one of many who are prepared to smooth the way for Huw T. Edwards. Welsh.

'ECO' [?], Pentwyn, Hewl Colbren Uchaf, Gwaun Cae Gurwen, Rhydaman. Encloses a copy of a letter (not attached) which he received after his return from Manchester. When one reflects that Tom Richards is one of the gwerin, it is enough to make one think that greater fair play is available from the Tories of England than from one's own people. Granada gave him his first opportunity to broadcast on rugby, and Y Faner the first opportunity to write. The BBC invited him to broadcast in 1946 after his articles had appeared in Y Faner. Were it not for those articles, a programme like Maes Chwarae would not have been broadcast. He has never appeared on TWW and has received more invitations to Granada than to the BBC in Cardiff. They are far too ready to accept ideas but not to implement them. The three stations should co-operate to produce Welsh programmes. Considers that this matter is more than just a personal problem and intends to raise it with Mr Alun Talfan Davies. Welsh.

Aneurin [Bevan], Ministry of Health, Whitehall, London SW1. Was unhappy that Zilliacus was not heard at the Conference, but this was the decision of the Conference and not the Executive. He was also unhappy about Sam's references and the reasons which he gave for the expulsion of Zilliacus. But the writer agreed that Zilliacus had to go because of his close association with the enemies of the Labour Party and Social Democracy. He had no right to claim to be the representative of the Labour Party. Zilliacus had consistently broken decisions which had been democratically arrived at. The writer sincerely hopes that Huw T. Edwards can agree with these views. 'Private & Confidential'.
