Islwyn Evans, 44 Illtyd Avenue, Llantwit Major. Watched Huw T. Edwards's interview on television with great interest. Admired his courage, humour, humility and sentiments. People all over the world are tired of the arrogance of the English. Wales should have her own parliament which would further the economic well-being of the Welsh people and would prevent her being overwhelmed by her English neighbours.

Blaise Gillie, Welsh Office, Ministry of Housing and Local Government, Cathays Park, Cardiff. Thanks to Huw T. Edwards for defending him in The People, a newspaper which he does not take. It is difficult to know how things are going to turn out. Feels confident that the Swansea-Llanelly area has the potential to develop well. But there is something missing in this area which is holding it back. Will look forward to a discussion with Huw T. Edwards presently. Welsh.

Blaise Gillie, Welsh Office, Ministry of Housing and Local Government, Cathays Park, Cardiff. Encloses a small cheque for Y Faner to thank Huw T. Edwards personally, and as a token of his admiration for his work for Wales. Has had a very interesting conversation with Mrs Eirene White, MP, while waiting for the train at Chester, and would like to discuss matters with her further. Does not know when he will next be at London and is very busy. A week's holiday is looming, and then he will have to go up to North Wales for the visit of Prince Philip. Will go to London soon after that. Welsh.

[J. R. Jones], The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, Hong Kong. Has been wandering through Japan and the Philippines. Is enclosing a cheque for £50 for the Festival of Wales Fund. It is difficult to extract money from Welsh people in Hong Kong. Does Huw T. Edwards have any propaganda which the writer might use to appeal for funds? Has heard from Stephanie Davies that Kenneth might come to Hong Kong before Christmas, but as yet there is no sign of Huw T. Edwards or Mervyn [Jones]. Has been reading Tros y Tresi and Gwr y Faner. Welsh Incomplete.

Henry Brooke, Minister for Welsh Affairs, Whitehall, London SW1. Thanks for Huw T. Edwards's frank letter. No decision has as yet been reached concerning the appointment of a Minister of State for Wales, and all the references in the newspapers are pure speculation. The conjecture was initiated by the report of a journalist in the Liverpool Daily Post, who was trying to out-bid the reporting of the Western Mail on this subject. Is glad that he and Huw T. Edwards enjoy such a close rapport, even though they do not agree on every matter. Has told the Prime Minister that he would welcome a private conversation with Huw T. Edwards. The Prime Minister is actually considering the matter at present in the light of all the material which has been presented to him. Hopes that the Prime Minister will agree that the writer should have a private talk with Huw T. Edwards before he sends his reply to the Council. 'Private and Confidential' Written in reply to A2/125.

Jim [James] G[riffiths], House of Commons. Missed Huw T. Edwards on the telephone because he was at Aldershot that evening. The assistance which Huw T. Edwards provided over west Wales is much appreciated by the writer and the local people. There is a meeting with the Ministers the following day, and the writer will remember what Huw T. Edwards had to say. The Labour Shadow Cabinet would not be prepared to make a pronouncement of the kind wished by Huw T. Edwards. Will write again after the meeting with the Ministers.

Henry Brooke, Minister for Welsh Affairs, Whitehall, London SW1. Is anxious to appoint the Water Advisory Committee for Wales as the technical survey has been making good progress. Has not forgotten his pledge to inform the Council for Wales and Monmouthshire of the membership and terms of membership of the Committee. Huw T. Edwards suggested that Sir William Jones should be invited to serve as chairman of the Committee. But has decided to ask Alderman Lloyd O. Owen to act as Chairman, and he has agreed. It is his policy to attempt to enlarge the circle of those involved in Welsh administration. As Huw T. Edwards has suggested, he is inviting Mr Moses Griffiths to serve on the Committee. 'Personal'.

Daniel Williams, Bron y Garth, Hen Golwyn [Old Colwyn]. Thanks for the tribute to Gwynfryn who is also mentioned in Tros y Tresi. Gwynfryn [Jones] was a rebel and a true son of y werin. Thinks that Huw T. Edwards should write further works as he has the gift of a true writer. Was also much impressed hearing Huw T. Edwards lecture. Reflects on their common experiences. Would much like to meet up with Huw T. Edwards. Is glad of Huw T. Edwards's association with the WEA. Welsh.

[ ], Islwyn, Trelogan, Holywell. Warmest congratulations on It was my Privilege. The writer spent the period 1920-4 at Shotton, and came into close contact with the head and Arthur Deakin, especially the latter. Reading Huw T. Edwards's book, therefore, stirred many a memory. He was accompanied by Deakin the first time he spoke on a political platform in 1924, and can still depict him at the meetings Welsh Incomplete.

Jenkin [Alban Davies], 19 York Terrace, Regent's Park, London NW1. Was moved by the generous sentiments which Huw T. Edwards and Dr Haydn [Williams] have towards him. But is anxious that Huw T. Edwards should proceed with this matter as it would not help the College at Aberystwyth. It could cause embarrassment so soon after the row over the resignation of Principal Goronwy Rees. To pass over Ivor Evans, who has rendered so much valuable service to the college, could be very damaging. He will never forget the kindness of Huw T. Edwards and Dr Haydn. Is writing to Grismond Phillips about Gwilym.

Sir John Cecil-williams, Hon. Secretary of the Honourable Society of Cymmrodorion, 20 Bedford Square, London WC1. Is very pleased that Huw T. Edwards is going over to the USA as Chairman of the Welsh Tourist Board on behalf of the British Travel and Holidays Association. Feels sure that he will be well received and that his visit will prove profitable. There is a need to make it clear that Wales has something different to offer from the rest of the United Kingdom and the Continental countries. The writer made this point to the Gymanfa Ganu of the USA and Canada at Washington to an audience of more than 4,000. He also addressed 400 to 500 people at Williamsburg when the plaque to Goronwy Owen was being unveiled. In addition, he gave a number of other addresses. He gained the impression that they would welcome greater co-operation from this side of the Atlantic, and feels sure that Huw T. Edwards's visit will prove beneficial.

[S.] Kenneth [Davies], George Elliot & Co. Ltd, Wire Rope Works, Cardiff. Wishes Huw T. Edwards bon voyage. Knows that he will have a wonderful time in the USA, and that he will do a first class job for the Welsh Tourist Board. The writer is also going to North America in April. Regrets not seeing Huw T. Edwards for such a long time. The interesting developments on the civil air front, notably the financial participation by BEA in Cambrian. The letter also bears a pencilled draft message by Huw T. Edwards to be sent in reply to SKD.

Rev. W. E. Jones ['ap Gerallt'], Gwalia, New Road, Newtown. Welcome home from two continents. Encloses a cutting from the Wrexham Leader (A1/400a) and one from the Montgomeryshire Express (A1/400b), both written by the same person. Asks if the County Treasurer of Montgomeryshire has any hope of securing a similar position in Flintshire. He is highly respected within Montgomeryshire as an exceptionally gifted person. Welsh.

Ken[neth] W. Thomas, Rhianfa, Russell Road, Rhyl, Finance Officer of the Clwyd and Deeside Hospital Management Committee. Wishes to explain his attitude in order that Huw T. Edwards and the Committee can understand. Outlines the long-term problems within his Department and the efforts which he had made over the years to solve them. Has never taken his full quota of holidays because of an excessive work-load. The main difficulty was the depreciation in the rates of pay available. There is also a lack of properly qualified staff on the junior level. Because of the resultant decline in the quality of his own work and his inability to treat staff fairly, he wishes to leave the post. Was unhappy with the attitude of the senior audit staff. Is consequently seeking a lower grade post which will give him a little more leisure time. The Group Secretary has suggested that the writer drafts a report setting out the immediate problems and the need for qualified accountancy assistance. Will be tempted to accept any reasonable post which is offered him, but will not take any step without a discussion with Huw T. Edwards for whose unfailing support he is most grateful.
