Mabinogion manuscripts

Manuscripts of Lady Charlotte Guest, 1838-[1843], relating to her translations of nine of the twelve Welsh folk tales published as The Mabinogion from the Llyfr Coch Hergest, and Other Ancient Welsh Manuscripts, with an English Translation and Notes, Parts I-VI (1838-1845), namely 'Iarlles y Ffynnawn', 'Peredur ab Efrawc', 'Geraint ab Erbin', 'Kulhwch ac Olwen', 'Breuddwyd Rhonabwy', 'Pwyll Pendevig Dyved', 'Branwen verch Llyr', 'Manawyddan vab Llyr' and 'Math vab Mathonwy'. The manuscripts consist of transcripts of the original Welsh texts, some in the hand of John Jones (Tegid) and other scribes; drafts of Charlotte Guest's translations; and drafts for her notes to each translation. Most of the manuscripts consist of author's copy for the printers. None of the material relates to 'Breuddwyd Maxen Wledig', 'Kyfranc Lludd a Llevelys' or 'Hanes Taliesin', the three remaining tales published in the seventh and final part (1849).

Iarlles y Ffynnawn - notes

Notes relating to 'Iarlles y Ffynnawn' in the hand of Charlotte Guest, comprising a note on the Black Knight (omitted from the book) (A2/3); drafts of the 'Note on the Forest of Breceliande and the Fountain of Baranton' and 'Llyn Dulyn in Snowdon' [see Mabinogion (1849), I, 216-226] (A2/4); and the notes on the German, Scandinavian (Danish, Swedish and Icelandic) versions of Ywaine [see Mabinogion (1849), I, 227-232] (A2/5).
While 'Iarlles y Ffynnawn' was published in 1838, the contents of A2/4-5 were apparently held back, to be published in The Mabinogion… Part II: Peredur the Son of Evrawc (London and Llandovery, 1839).

Dedication

Two drafts, dated 21 May and 29 August 1838, of the dedication to Charlotte Guest's two eldest sons, Ivor and Merthyr, published in The Mabinogion… Part I: The Lady of the Fountain (London and Llandovery, 1838).

Geraint ab Erbin

A heavily emended draft, [1838] (watermarks 1837), of the English translation of 'Geraint ab Erbin' in the hand of Charlotte Guest [see Mabinogion (1849), II, 67-141].
According to Guest's journal, on 11-16 December 1838 she and Thomas Price (Carnhuanawc) worked at correcting her translation of Geraint, which had otherwise been completed by her that Summer (Lady Charlotte Guest MS XI, p. 103). The text was first published in The Mabinogion… Part III: Geraint the Son of Erbin (London and Llandovery, 1840).

German versions of Sir Ywaine

An abstract, [1838x1839], in English, of Hartmann von Aue's German version of 'Sir Ywaine', together with notes on both his and Ulrich's versions of the poem. It was used by Charlotte Guest in preparing her notices on the German versions of 'Sir Ywaine' [see Mabinogion (1849), I, 227-229].
The abstract is arranged as 12 songs, following Carl Michaeler's edition of 1786.

Geraint ab Erbin - notes

Drafts, [1839], in the hand of Charlotte Guest, of each of the thirty-nine notes on the text of 'Geraint ab Erbin' [see Mabinogion (1849), II, 142-176] (A4/4); together with the note on the 'Manuscript of Geraint in the Hengwrt Collection' [Mabinogion (1849), II, 177] and the first two leaves of the note on 'Erec and Eneide' [Mabinogion (1849), II, 178-179] (A4/5).
Note No. 15, 'In her veil', is not found in the printed version; the gaps in the numbering (Nos 4, 30-31, 33, 42) are suggestive of other omissions. The text was first published in The Mabinogion… Part III: Geraint the Son of Erbin (London and Llandovery, 1840).
