A collection consisting mainly of essays and literary extracts by Stephens. Some of the works were submitted as competitive pieces at eisteddfodau.

Eisteddfod material

Miscellaneous material relating to eisteddfodau, including an 'englyn' to 'Carnhuanawc' (Thomas Price), a prize poem by 'Talhaiarn' (John Jones) entitled 'Sali Smith', extracts from speeches at Carmarthen eisteddfod, 1823, and Cardiff eisteddfod, 1834, and adjudications by Stephens on essays submitted at eisteddfodau held at Aberafan and Aberdare.

Miscellaneous papers

Biographical notes and press cuttings relating to Stephens and papers collected by him, including broadsides relating to eisteddfodau, prospectuses and prefaces of printed works, articles for the press, poems and letters.

Some one hundred and seventy-three autograph letters, 1845-1874, to Stephens from a large number of individuals prominent in the life of Wales, including Max Muller, Richard Parry (Gwalchmai), Sir Thomas Phillipps of Middle Hill, Thomas Price (Carnhuanawc), William Rees, Llandovery, Samuel Roberts (S. R.), Albert Schulz, Connop Thirlwall, S. Prideaux Tregelles, Theodore Hersart de la Villemarque, John Williams (Ab Ithel), Morris Williams (Nicander), Robert Williams, Rhydycroesau, and Rowland Williams (items 201-373). Also included in the volume are miscellaneous further letters, together with other papers including notes, draft articles, visas, eisteddfod adjudications and poetry, 1840-1862 (items 374-400).

Silvan Evans, Thomas Gee, Lady Charlotte Guest, Lady Hall, David Howell (Llawdden), J. Spinther James, John Jones (Talhaiarn), W. Basil Jones and Henri Martin.

Transcripts, [c. 1850] (watermark 1848), of poems by Cynddelw Brydydd Mawr, printed in The Myvyrian Archaiology of Wales, I (London, 1801).

'The History of Wales ...'

Two volumes containing an essay entitled 'The History of Wales from the earliest period to The Present Time with an Introduction containing the history of The Migrations of the Kymry prior to their arrival in The Isle of Britain', awarded a prize at the Rhuddlan royal eisteddfod, 1850; and the draft of the introduction and a portion of the first chapter, with the adjudication, additional notes and a letter from Rowland Williams, one of the adjudicators.

Traethodau

Three essays written in 1840 entitled 'Y buddioldeb i ddyn o arferiad ei reswm ...', 'The history of human civilisation', and 'Hanes gwareiddiad dynolryw'.

Essay on the Druids

'An essay on the Anguinium Ovum - the Oak Mistletoe &c. with a History of the Druids, their customs, &c., and an account of the Druidic Alphabet'.

Notes, mainly relating to the Welsh language, its relation to other European languages, and its grammar and orthography, together with a printed letter by [Robert John Pryse] ('Gweirydd ap Rhys') and Stephens 'Att y Llenorion appwyntiedig yn Llangollen i drefnu Orgraph y Gymraeg', etc.
