A certificate recording the admission of John Lloyd of Hafodunos, esq., as a member of the Druid Society, signed by J. Williams, archdruid, 31 August 1780. The seal of the society is attached.

A letter book of Rob[er]t Howard [collector of customs at Conway, co. Caernarvon], and post master there 1759-1760, containing holograph copies and abstracts of letters written at Conway during the period 1755- 1765. The outside upper cover is inscribed 'Letter Book since Feb[ruar]y 1752', but the first few pages of the volume have been torn out and the first entry is dated Jan[uar]y 1755. The letters deal with the personal and family affairs of the writer (health, financial transactions, legal problems, etc.), his activities as an estate agent or steward, and, to a much lesser degree, his work as a customs and post office official (mainly the rendering of accounts). Specific matters dealt with include the death of Mrs. Marg[are]t Wynne [of Bodysgallen] and the management of affairs at Bodscallen for Robert Wynne, M.P., during his absence (1755); a law suit in which the writer's right to property [?Tre Castell] at Llanglunnin [co. Caernarvon] was contested (1756-1757); the excessive price of corn, the scarcity of corn [ at Conway] market, the distress of 'the meanest sort of people', and the justices' recommendation that no grain be moved 'from this river' [at Conway] (1757); disturbances [at Conway], and a subpoena issued against the writer as one of the commissioners of the [Conway] turnpike road (1758); the writer's application for and appointment to the office of post master at Conway in succession to Hugh Holland in 1759, and his resignation of the said office in 1760; the purchase by the writer from Robert Williams of Chester of property called Hendre and the payment of annuities charged upon the said property (1762-1763); the writer's management of the Bodnod estate [in the parish of Eglwys-back, co. Thirty holograph letters from Alfred B[utler] Clough [Fellow of Jesus College, Oxford, 1817-1839, and rector of Braunston, co. Northampton, 1838- 1870] from Jesus College (27), from Chester (1) and from Minydon [Colwyn, co. Denbigh] (2), to the Reverend [Richard] Howard [D.D., rector of Denbigh, 1818-1843, rector of Llandegfan with Beaumaris, 1826-1843, etc.] at Beaumaris, 1832-1839 (the writer's opinion of a former student, Evan Pughe [? of Llanfihangel Genau'r Glyn, co. Cardigan, vicar of Llanidloes, 1837-1850] (1832); the intention of the Conservatives at Oxford [University] to propose [Arthur Wellesley, 1st] duke of Wellington, as candidate for the chancellorship, his election to the said office unopposed, comments on his character, etc., the writer's inclination to leave Oxford, comments on the conduct and suitability for orders of W[ ] Ll[ ] Williams (1834); the winning of the English essay prize at Rugby school by Arthur [Hugh Clough, 1819-1861, the poet], visits to and the progress being made by Dick [? The letters also contain throughout a considerable amount of news of the writer's social and other activities at Oxford, and news of and enquiries concerning relatives and mutual friends or acquaintances.

A collection consisting mainly of the manuscripts, correspondence and other papers, [16 cent., second ½]-[1909x1925], of the Lloyd family of Hafodunos, Denbighshire and Wigfair, Flintshire, including a considerable amount of correspondence to and from John Lloyd ('The Philosopher'), one of the most notable members of the family. The collection also includes correspondence of members of the Wynn family of Gwydir, the Clough family of Plas Clough and Hafodunos, the Holland family of Berw, the families of Carreglwyd, and the Rev. Richard Howard, Denbigh (matters relating to lead, iron and mineral resources in Flintshire); together with Hafodunos and Wigfair rentals and accounts and accounts relating to lead and copper mines in North Wales.
