Papers, 1957-8, relating to the Committee on Public Libraries in England and Wales (the Roberts Committee) deposited by T. I. Ellis in January 1959 (see Annual Report, 1958-1959, p. 53). This Committee, of which Mr Ellis was a member, was appointed by the Minister of Education in September 1957 to consider the structure of the public library service in England and Wales. The papers include Agenda, Minutes, General Papers, Evidence, Correspondence, and drafts of the Report. The ninth meeting of the Committee was held at Aberystwyth on 28 March 1958, to hear oral evidence about the public library service in Wales. Some of the written evidence submitted also relates to Wales (e.g. E9/57, 12/57, 15/57, 18/57, 37/57, 39/58 (in print), 57/58, 58/58, 59/58, 60/58 and 62/58).

Llanbadarn Fawr (Faenor) title deeds

Title deeds of houses and lands in the township of Faenor in the parish of Llanbadarn Fawr, 1552-1885. Part of the township, Faenor Issa, is also referred to as lying in Dyffryn Clarach. The properties include Y Gardde Bychen and Tir Maes y Gove, acquired by Sir Richard Pryse between 1600 and 1604; a moiety of Tythyn Estyn y Ffynon Ddu, purchased by Sir Richard Pryse, 1643/4; Tyddyn Estyn Ffynnon Sais Duy purchased by Thomas Pryse, 1741; Tythyn Bron y Gof, Tythyn Dol y Velin, etc., purchased by Thomas Pryse in 1734; and Wern Philip purchased by the trustees of Sir Pryse Pryse, 1885. There are also miscellaneous deeds recording acqusitions by mortgage and purchase by John Pryse, Thomas Pryse of Glanfred, Sir Richard Pryse (elder and younger), and Thomas Pryse of Ynysgreigiog, 1564-1652. Other prominent names include Richard Phillipps of Aberystwyth and his son Henry, Sir Thomas Johnes of Abermarlais, the Vaughan family of Rhosgillan, Llanbadarn Fawr, Rees of Rhiwarthen, and Lloyd of Dan y Castell, Llanychaearn.

Llanfihangel Genau’r-glyn (Henllys) title deeds

Title deeds of farms, houses and lands in the township of Henllys in the parish of Llanfihangel Genau’r-glyn, 1536-1803. The most prominent property is the farm of Brynllys, 1541-1666, 1799. Other files relate to Ynys Vergi, 1536-1570; Tythyn Bron Heilyn and miscellaneous other properties, 1560-1670; Tythin Bron Henllys, Tythin Pen y Bont and Tythin Pen y Brin Mawr, 1608-1625; Llwyn Ava Goch, 1699; and an exchange of Neuadd Henllys for Bwlchglanfadog, 1803.

Letters to Boys and Tweedie from the Pryse family, agents, trustees, etc.

Letters to the solicitors, Hale, Boys and Austen (later Boys and Tweedie) of Ely Place, London, from members of the Pryse family, their agents, trustees, bankers, and other solicitors, 1845-1870. The main correspondents are Pryse Loveden (d. 1855), Sir Pryse Pryse, Capt. Edward Lewis Pryse, occasionally John Pugh Pryse of Bwlchbychan and Aberglasney, other members of the Pryse family, Rev. Samuel Heckford of Buscot, Thomas Davies of Cardigan, John Graham Williams, George Griffiths Williams, H.C. Fryer of Lodge Park, the Office of Woods and Forests, John Lewes of Llanlear, Atwood and Hughes of Aberystwyth, Charles Tennant, and the Loveden trustees, Rev. James Allen of Castlemartin and Thomas Pryce Lloyd of Pengwern. The major areas of concern are the financial and legal issues affecting the estates after the death of Pryse Pryse on 2 January 1849; the administration of the estates by trustees following the death of Pryse Loveden in 1855; mortgages on the Gogerddan and Buscot estates, and the sale of Buscot Park; the discharge of legacies, and the payment of the portions due to Jane Elizabeth Loveden, Harriet Thiebault (previously Thayer), Edward Lewis Pryse and John Pugh Pryse; disposal of the house in Bridge Street, Aberystwyth and of personal effects after the death of Jane Elizabeth Loveden in 1855; and leasing of the Gogerddan mines.
