Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners' Association.

Association general minute books,

Bound minutes of meetings held by the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association. The minutes cover the Association's general meetings, special meetings, annual meetings and meetings of the Council. The early volumes also contain the minutes of the Cardiff District Board to May 1892 (see A1-5) and the Finance Committee meetings to March 1888 (see A1-3). The minutes include the original motion to form The Association of Iron and Coal Masters; negotiations leading to the formation of The Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association; the division of the Association into 3 districts (Cardiff, Newport and Swansea); consideration of reports from the district boards and various appointed committees - such as the House Coal Owners Committee, Finance Committee, owners' side of the Sliding Scale Committee, the Coal Shippers Committee, etc.; discussions and resolutions embodying the Association's general policy on such issues as wage rate changes, strikes, the Sliding Scales, the Conciliation Board, Home Office Special Rules, etc.; approval of applications for membership and acceptance of resignations from existing members; decisions on policy to be adopted towards Government Bills and Acts affecting the mining interest; relations with the Mining Association of Great Britain; and all matters affecting the coal industry of South Wales are covered generally.

Papers relating to the Joint Sub-committee of representatives, 1933-1937, and the Mining Association of Great Britain Sub-committee, 1939-1946. Material covers topics such as draw hooks and bars, wheels with cast iron bosses, G.R. plating and repairs, 1933-1938; standard metal-bodied 12-ton mineral wagons, 1934-1935, and the wagon census of 1937.

20-ton wagons, defective wagons and points and crossings,

Large group of papers on subjects including wear and tear allowance for income tax purposes, 1939; the provision of terminal facilities for 20-ton wagons at collieries, 1930-1933; terminal charges (1926 proceedings of the Railway Rates Tribunal); private siding agreement at Fernhill, including a copy of the 1912 Agreement, 1931-1932; damage caused to private wagons and injuries to repairers, 1930; papers of a test case regarding responsibility for payments for the renewal of points and crossings near colliery sidings, 1927-1931; the classification of goods; and the price of Welsh coal to the Swedish Naval Authority, 1930.

British Standards Institution,

Papers comprising notices and drafts of forthcoming British Standards relating to picks, mattocks, screen analysis of coal, sampling of coal, mining type transformers, miners' lamp bulbs, tests for steam boilers, and other technical subjects. Also, revisions for standards and specifications including miners' lamp bulbs pump tests and test sieves. Includes the handbook of British Standards, 1942 and 1943, and monthly information sheets, September 1944-December 1946.

Repairs to requisitioned wagons (1),

Papers relating to various aspects and methods of repairs made to requisitioned wagons including a schedule of charges, 1946; extensive repairs, 1943-1946; supplies of steel and timber, 1946; heavy repairs to category A and B wagons, 1945-1946; and wagons unfit for certain classes of traffic, which includes some minutes of the Technical and Accountants' Sub-Committees, 1939-1945.

20-ton mineral wagons: specifications and drawings,

Material relating to the maintenance, repair, and railway conveyance rates of 20-ton mineral wagons comprising letters and correspondence, reports, notes, news cuttings, statistics, specifications and drawings. Also, copies of minutes of meetings of the Joint Sub-committee of Representatives of the Railway Companies' Chief Mechanical Engineers and of the Private Wagon Owners' Associations in which specific technical subjects such as axle-box bearings, side-doors, draw-gear, draw-hooks and bars, bearing spring shoes for wood-frame wagons, starring of tank wagons, lubricating pads and matters relating to the rebuilding of damaged private owners' wagons were discussed.

Papers include the Great Western Railway Act 1931, Dock Charges; railway freight rebates, 1937; the scales of rebates, 1936-1939; de-rating rebate in tipping and weighing charges, 1936-1937; de-rating relief on coal for the Admiralty, 1940-1941; and the docks de-rating rebate, as of 1 October 1930, 1930-1931.

Pitwood imports and allocation,

Papers relating to the agreements to exchange coal in return for pitwood, including the distribution of pitwood to collieries, July to September 1934-1935; the uptake of allocations, 1935-1937; reduced imports from Portugal, 1935; general correspondence regarding pitwood for coals, 1935; and transfer certificates, 1934.
