Some of the poems are in the hand of the compiler but the majority are in the form of cuttings, largely of the second and third quarters of the nineteenth century, with annotations from Y Drysorfa, Trysorfa y Plant, Y Gwyliedydd, [Y Tyst Apostolaidd], Yr Herald Cymraeg, Y Gwladgarwr, Yr Arweinydd, Y Greal [Llangollen], Y Dysgedydd, Taliesin, Goleuad Cymru, Baner ac Amserau Cymru, Y Cymro, Yr Anybynwr, Seren Gomer, Y Drych, etc. The spine is lettered 'Gweithiau Beirdd Lleyn ac Eifionydd'.

A volume in the hand of J. H. Davies containing an alphabetical index of first lines of nineteenth century Welsh ballads ('Vols I-XV and two other vols. Y & Z').

Seventy-two holograph letters of John Rhys from Rhyl, Oxford, etc., 1871-84, of which ten, mainly from the period 1871-2, are addressed to J. H. S[ilvan] Evans at Llanymawddwy and the remainder to his father D. Silvan Evans at Llanymawddwy and Llanwrin. Subjects of the correspondence include the writer's appointment as Inspector of Schools in North Flintshire and Denbighshire, the writer's marriage, the Principalship at Aberystwyth [College] (1872), ogham and other inscriptions, Welsh borrowings from classical languages, contributions to Archaeologia Cambrensis, charters belonging to Welsh churches preserved at Canterbury, Mr [Richard Rolt] Brash's contemptuous treatment of the writer, the resignation of the recipient (D. Silvan Evans) as editor of Archaeologia Cambrensis, the writer's appointment to the chair of Celtic at Oxford, the publication of the writer's volume [2nd ed. of Lectures on Welsh Philology, 1879], Welsh words of English origin, Cardiganshire dialects, the writer's desire to examine the Peniarth manuscripts, the position of Welsh at [St David's College] Lampeter, the desire of Mr [E. G. B.] Phillimore to consult the recipient (D. Silvan Evans)'s text of Y Marchog Crwydrad, the recipient (D. Silvan Evans)'s dictionary, copious observations on matters of Welsh etymology, personal, etc. The volume also includes an incomplete copy reply by [D. Silvan Evans], 1874, and an unsigned holograph letter of [E. L. Barnwell], Melksham [1874], both concerned with the controversy between John Rhys and Richard Rolt Brash.

A composite volume containing [Thomas Maurice:] Memoirs of the Author of Indian Antiquities ... Part I (2nd. ed.) (London, 1821) and Parts II-III (London, 1820, 1822). Preceding the text are two engraved portraits of Thomas Maurice (one published 1 January 1801) and bound in at the end are two draft letters by J[ohn] B[owyer] N[ichols] to Dr [Samuel] Parr, Hatton, near Warwick, and one reply by Samuel Parr to J. B. Nichols, Westminster, 1824 (observations on the 'Memoir' of Thomas Maurice compiled by J. B. Nichols); a letter from W. B. Maurice (nephew of Thomas Maurice) to J. B. Nicholls [sic], undated [1824] (observations on the 'Memoir'); a corrected copy of a sonnet beginning 'Maurice! the Bard of Patriotism, adieu!', 2 April 1824 ('Used in p. 359'); a reprint, and a cutting of an abridged version, of the 'Memoir of Rev. Thomas Maurice' [by J. B. Nichols] from the Gentleman's Magazine, May 1824; 'Substance of the Will' of Thomas Maurice and probate accounts, 1824; and A Catalogue of the entire Library of the late Reverend Thomas Maurice, Assistant Librarian at the British Museum ... which will be sold by auction, by Mr Sotheby ..... On Saturday, January 8, 1825 and Six following Days (Sunday excepted).

Two volumes containing over one hundred and sixty holograph letters and postcards and fragments of letters from B[enjamin] Williams ('Gwynionydd') to D. Silvan Evans ('Hirlas'). The letters are addressed from a variety of places, such as Rhydlewis, Llanfihangel ar Arth, Llangeitho, Llangan, Trefilan, Cenarth, Newcastle Emlyn, Cwmdwr, Abergwennol, Llandovery, Llanddeusant, Penboyr, Pontlottyn and Llanover. The inclusive period of the letters is 1860-91 but the majority are dated within the years 1882-8. The main subjects of discussion are family bereavements and other news, South Cardiganshire pedigrees and biographies, the etymology of place and dialect names, institutions within the Established Church generally of interest to the writer, and day-to-day events and conditions of life and employment at Plas Llanofer. In addition there are copious references to other matters, such as the election of H[enry] Richard ('y dihyryn') for Merthyr [Tudful]; the recipient's edition of Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry; the writer's visits to North Pembrokeshire and South Cardiganshire parishes to examine registers; a proposed second edition of the writer's Enwogion Ceredigion; the writer's activities with the Archaeological Association; the writer's visits to Bronwydd, to St Davids, etc.; the discovery by the writer of an ogham stone at Llandygwydd; news of the family of David Owen ('Brutus'); a new lease of the writer's home at Wenallt, [in Troedyraur]; the library of D. L Wooding at Beulah; the absence of Welsh services at Llechryd Church; the writer's purchase of Tir y felin Ban [near Wenallt] on the Gogerddan estate; the death of [John Morris Jones] 'Ioan Cunllo' and the sale of his library; rumours of the appointment of the recipient to the see of Llandaff (1883); the political and religious affiliations of contemporary Welsh barristers; the reroofing of Tirabad Church (1883); the progress of the recipient's Dictionary; the award to the recipient of a Cymmrodorion medal; the consecration of Llanfair ar y Bryn Church (1883); coming-of-age celebrations at Pentre [in Maenordeifi, Pembrokeshire]; the frequency of bastard words in the work of Rhys Prichard; the proposed memorial chapel to 'Williams Pantycelyn' at Llandovery; the progress of the woollen industry at 'Felindre Siencyn y Drefach'; the reluctance of H. M. Stanley to acknowledge his Welsh origins; the shortcomings of Yr Haul; the efforts of [Richard Lewis] the bishop of Llandaff to save Y Llan; the presence of Father Ignatius in the writer's congregation; the writer's mistrust of Welsh Nonconformity; the writer's acquisition of copies of Seren Gomer at Dalar Wen, near Ystradffin; eisteddfodau at Caerwys and Abergavenny; the use of Welsh in religious services in Goettref Church; tithe disputes in Penbryn and Troedyraur; the literary knowledge of Dafydd Evans of Glynbuarth in Llangeitho; the phenomenal knowledge of plant names of Pritchard of Crynca in Llanddeusant; the erection of an iron church at Abercarn; a shield designed by Milo Griffith for presentation to the Prince of Wales, and a detailed pedigree of Miles Griffith; a secret conference at Lampeter to promote the union of the Episcopal Church and 'Y Corff' [the Calvinistic Methodists] (1889); the efforts of Mr (aft. Sir) [Joseph Alfred] Bradney at Llandeilo Croesenni to learn Welsh and to promote the learning of the language in that area; etc. At the end of the volume are verses and miscellaneous notes, and a holograph letter to [D. Silvan] Evans from Ivor P. Williams [son of 'Gwynionydd'] from Wenallt, Rhydlewis, [18]91 (the will of 'Gwynionydd').

An imperfect copy, completed in manuscript by J. H. Davies, of William Roberts (O Lanor yn Llyn), Interlude Morgan y Gogrwr ar Gariadogs Neu Ffrewyll y Methodistiaid ...(Mwythig. Argraphwyd gan R. Lathrob .... 1745). Bound in at the end of the volume is a transcript by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') of 'Englynion o waith [William Roberts] Clochydd Llannor i'r gau athrawon neu'r pregethwyr sydd yn y Bala yn pregethu ag mewn llawer o fanne eraill' (cf Cwrtmawr MS 226, 28-31). There are some notes by J. H. Davies on the flyleaf.

A volume in the hand of D. Silvan Evans described on the title-page as 'Lewis Morris's Additions to Dr Davies's Welsh-Latin Dictionary (from autographs) 1879. (The original Copy, once belonging to Lewis Morris, and annotated on by him, is now (1879) in the possession of the Rev. Thomas James, LLD, ['Llallawg'], Vicar of Netherthong, near Huddersfield)'. The scribe has added the following observations: 'The additions, it will be seen, are few, and very unimportant ..', and at the end has recorded the following entry: 'Returned the Copy of Dr Davies's Dictionary lent me by Llallawg, for transcribing the preceding notes, July 30, 1879'.

Miscellaneous documents of Thomas Richards, vicar of Darowen, including a draft notice in his hand to the inhabitants of Darowen, 1825, in support of a raffle (refers to 'shooting or discharging a musket at a target at the distance of a hundred yards') for an oak drag ('commonly called Cartincar pencar') made by Evan Jones, carpenter, of the village of Darowen; four letters to Thomas Richards from the Chamberlain's Office, Council House, Bristol, 1821-32, enclosing certificates of annuities payable to residents of the parish of Darowen; an invoice, 1816, for search of, and certificate of baptism from, the parish register of Llanwrin, 1816; lists of 'Sentences the same sound and sense in Lat[in] and Welsh' and 'Sentences in Greek of like sound and sense as 'W[elsh]', 'Memoria Technica', being mnemonic verses on English kings and queens; a printed prospectus of The Literary and Translation Society of Wales (Owen, Printer, Pool); Latin exercises; etc.

An elaborately bound album of material relating to Richard Robert Jones ('Dic Aberdaron'; 1780-1843), including paste-downs of Memoir of Richard Robert Jones .... (London, 1822); particulars of the 'Phrenological development of Richard Jones'; three holograph letters from H[ugh] Humphreys, Carnarvon to [Joseph] Mayer, Goldsmith, Liverpool, 1848 (the loan of a woodcut and thanks for information towards a biography of 'Dic Aberdaron' to be published by the writer); a pencil drawing and water-colour copy, together with wood and other engravings of 'Dic Aberdaron'; etc.

A scrap-book of press cuttings of Cardiganshire interest. The titles include 'Y Parch. Phiup [sic] Pugh a'i Amserau' (attributed in the hand of J. H. Davies to D. Worthington, with the comment that 'This article is wrong in nearly every detail'), 'Some Old Records of Cardiganshire', 'Cymru Fu' ('Grand Jurors for 1732', 'An old Revenue Conflict in Cardiganshire', 'Old Welsh Ballads', 'Extracts from Gaol Files', 'The First Press in Wales', and 'The Manor of Perfedd...'), 'Glimpses of Aberystwyth in Shakespeare's Time' by E. A. L. [i.e. Professor E. A. Lewis, University of Wales, Aberystwyth], 'Fifty Years of the 'Cambrian News', Welsh Journalist's Reminiscenses' by W. R. H. [i.e. William Robert Hall, Aberystwyth], 'The House of Peterwell', etc.

A scrap-book inferentially compiled by John Lloyd Jones ('Clwydwenfro'; 1835-1919) containing press cuttings and a few manuscript items. Some of the cuttings are dated within the 1850s-1870s and among the more interesting titles are 'Hynodion Cwm Rhondda .... Testyn Cystadleuol Eisteddfod y Porth, Nadolig, 1861'; 'Collegiate and University Education in Wales'; 'Llythyr oddiwrth y Parch. Morris Phillips, Cenhadwr i India'; 'Teyrnged i Goffadwriaeth Ioan Pedr'; 'Beirniadaeth ar Gyfansoddiadau Barddonol Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Aberdar, Awst 1861'; 'Llangollen Great National Eisteddfod' [1858]; 'Y Ffrwydriad yn Abercarn'; 'Sketches of Cardiff Preachers'; etc. The manuscript material comprises a tale entitled 'The Bride of Santa Croce', 19 November 1856, described in an annotation by J. Ll. James as 'the composition of the late John Griffith Davies (son of the Rev. J. Davies ['Siôn Gymro'], Glandwr, Pembrokeshire) who wrote it and sent it to John Lloyd James, then a student at Carmarthen College, that he might fill up the outline', and verses entitled 'Y Messiah', etc. addressed to John Ll. James, Berllandawel, Llanglwydwen and annotated in the latter's hand 'J. G. Davies, Yetwen, pan yn Narberth', etc. The outer upper cover is inscribed, in the hand of J. H. Davies, 'Articles and poetry from Cyfaill y Werin and other papers'.

A handsomely bound volume of manuscript entries and press cuttings entitled 'Catalogue of M.SS. and books of late Edw. Breese, F.S.A., Morva Lodge, Portmadoc'. Inset are a covering letter from Charles E. Breese, Portmadoc to J. H. Davies, [19]23, and a transcript by J. H. Davies from the Catalogue of a list made in 1879 of the Breese Manuscripts, with additional particulars of their dispersion and their then location.

An account book in the hand of J. H. Davies containing particulars of subscriptions, 1906-17 [to his edition of The Letters of Lewis, Richard, William and John Morris of Anglesey (Morrisiaid Mon) (Aberystwyth, 1907-9)].

A composite ('Amryw') volume of early nineteenth century printed Welsh texts (ballads, minor tracts etc.) with thirty-six pages of manuscript sermon or expository notes in Welsh and English.

A bound extract (pp. 194-213) [? from Cofnodion a Chyfansoddiadau Eisteddfod Genedlaethol 1909 (Llundain)] containing the adjudication by J. Arthur Price on an essay competition on the subject of 'The Welsh Jacobites' and the winning essay by Herbert M[illingchamp] Vaughan [of Llangoedmor], together with one page of additional 'Notes' in the hand of the author. Inset is a letter from Herbert M. Vaughan, Llangoedmore to [J. H.] Davies [1914] (covering the presentation of the volume, references to other books in the writer's possession and to the recipient's treasures, an invitation to the recipient to the writer's home). According to an inscription by the author in a similar copy of the work in the National Library of Wales 'Only six copies of this essay ... were printed in this form'.

A folder containing eight files of original letters and copies of letters and poetry from the eighteenth to the twentieth century. Files 1-3: Transcripts of letters by Lewis and Richard Morris, mainly to Evan Evans ('Ieuan Fardd') and Dafydd Jones of Trefriw, almost all published in Hugh Owen (ed.), Additional Letters of the Morrises of Anglesey (1735-1786), Y Cymmrodor, Vol. XLIX, 1947-9, the remainder published in G. J. Williams (gol.) Llythyrau at Ddafydd Jones o Drefriw. Cylchgrawn Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru. Atodiad. Cyfres III, Rhif 2 (1942), and J. H. Davies (ed.), The Letters of Lewis, Richard, William and John Morris of Anglesey (Morrisiaid Mon) (Aberystwyth, 1907-9). The original letters or copies from which these copies were transcribed are in the British Museum (Add MSS 14929, 15021, 15024, 15029) and the National Library of Wales (mainly Panton 74 and NLW MS 476). The original letters are preserved in NLW MS Panton 74. A transcript of a letter from Edward Richard, 1766, to Richard Morris (from BM Add MS 15025), and extracts from letters from Edward Richard to Lewis Morris, 1759 and undated (from BM Add MS 15029). A holograph letter from Edward Richard, Ystradmeuryg, 1762, to Lewis Morris, Penbryn (published in Hugh Owen, op. cit. Part II, pp. 562-3). File 5: A holograph letter from [the Reverend] W[illiam] Davies, Llanwryn [Montgomeryshire], 1710, to Henry Newman at the Reverend Mr Shute's in Bartlet's Buildings, London (receipt of letter and a packet from the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, subscriptions from other parishes, has partly prevailed with a certain minister to become a corresponding member). The letter bears the number 2381 (see Mary Clement (ed.), Correspondence and minutes of the S.P.C.K. relating to Wales 1699-1740 (Cardiff, 1952), p. 35. Abstract No. 2381). Holograph letters (13) and some poetry,1791-1819, of D[avid] Thomas ('Dafydd Ddu Eryri'), Waunfawr, Bettws St Garmon, etc. Some of the letters have been published in [John Jones] 'Myrddin Fardd', Adgof uwch Anghof (Penygroes, 1883). The letters are addressed to John Roberts ('Sion Lleyn'), Pwllheli (4), 1791-1806 (corrections to addressee's poetry, tributes to writer's brother, Humphrey, after his death, some short poetical compositions by the writer), to Griffith Williams ('Gutyn Peris'), Llandygai (8), 1799-1819, (poetry, subjects upon which writer desired addressee to compose hymns, meetings of bards and eisteddfodau, comments and news of contemporary poets, writer's health and work), and one letter, addressee not named, 1804, (addressee's poetry which writer had received, desires addressee to render 2 Samuel XXII in strict metres and to ask other poets to do the same). The poetry includes verses entitled 'Y Cynauaf mawr diweddaf' subscribed 'D. T. a'i cant allan o'r Saesneg ar ddymuniad John Jones Llandwrog Medi 10d 1804 (cf. Dafydd Thomas (Dafydd Ddû Eryri), Corph y Gaingc (Caernarfon, 1834), pp. 323-4), and 'Englynion newyddion i Long newydd o Gaernarfon yr hon a elwir Valiant'. There is also some poetry in English by [John Blackwell ('Alun')] and in Welsh by Evan Evans ('Ieuan Glan Geirionydd').
