Letters to Goronwy and Marian Roberts

The series comprises letters addressed to Goronwy O. Roberts, 1928-1981, together with a small number of letters, 1981-1995, addressed to Mrs Marian Roberts, later Lady Goronwy-Roberts. They are interspersed with a few drafts and copies of letters prepared by Goronwy Roberts in reply to the letters received. Many of the letters reflect Roberts's political career and the history of the Labour Party. Others relate to the wide range of his cultural and literary interests. A few are invitations to deliver speeches and lectures.

Constituency correspondence and papers

The series comprises correspondence and papers, 1946-1974, relating to Goronwy O. Roberts's work as Labour Member of Parliament for Caernarfonshire. They include letters from constituents asking for assistance and advice and drawing attention to problems and difficulties in the constituency, responses from government departments and ministries, letters concerning local events and activities, letters from organisations and societies within the county, and correspondence deriving from local government matters. The constituency correspondence is especially revealing in so far as it reflects local expectations from the Labour governments, 1945-1951, and later administrations.

Foreign affairs

The series consists of files of correspondence and papers, 1934-1981, relating to foreign affairs in general, specific countries and visits abroad undertaken by Goronwy Roberts. Many of them relate to his work as a minister of state at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, 1974-1979.

Domestic politics

The series consists of files, 1932-1981, relating to British political themes together with a few files on other subjects.

Welsh Affairs

The series comprises miscellaneous correspondence and papers, 1913-1917 and 1941-1981, relating to Welsh politics and Welsh affairs, many concerning devolution, the Welsh slate industry, broadcasting and publishing.

Printed items

The series consists of various printed items, 1900-1997, mainly collected by Goronwy Roberts during the course of his career, together with a small quantity of printed material assembled by his widow and family after his death in 1981. Much of the material is of political interest. Many of the items concern the history of the Labour Party and Goronwy Roberts's career.

Press cuttings

The series consists of press cuttings, 1922-1993, taken from national, Welsh and local newspapers. Most of the cuttings are of political interest, many concern the fortunes of the Labour Party and Goronwy Roberts's life and career.

Miscellaneous typescripts

The series comprises miscellaneous typescripts, 1930-1981, collected by Goronwy Roberts during the course of his career. Most are of political interest, many concerning Goronwy Roberts's career, the Labour Party or the proceedings of the House of Commons or the House of Lords.

The series consists of various miscellanea acquired by Lord Goronwy-Roberts, c. 1930-1981, including invitations to functions and programmes, 1948-1981, membership programmes, 1956-1960, business and identity cards, [1950]-[1980], bills and receipts, 1950-1973, manuscript and research notes, [1930]-1981, and greetings cards, [1950]-[1970].
