Miscellaneous legal cases and pardons,

Two series of documents deriving from the processes of the law in England and Wales. The first comprises papers accumulated during the proceedings of miscellaneous lawsuits, mainly equity cases in the courts of the Council in the Marches of Wales, Chancery, the Great Sessions and the Exchequer, 1509-1819, and involving some of the prominent families associated with Wynnstay, such as Purcell of Nantcriba, Wynn of Gwydir, and Kyffin of Glascoed, as well as Pugh of Mathafarn. The second series consists entirely of pardons for various misdemeanours, granted by the Crown or by peers who had the power of legal jurisdiction in particular lordships, 1458-1690.

Arbitration awards,

Arbitration awards and related papers involving various individuals and familied in Shropshire and North Wales, 1449-1710. See series level for further description.

Estate rentals

Estate rentals, 1772-1808. In 1772/3 there was a major re-arrangement of the rent collecting system. The manor of Cyfeiliog does not form part of this re-arrangement, except in that from 1772 the Tirymynych estate appears consistently in the same collection as the Rhiwsaeson and Mathafarn estates. The manor of Cyfeiliog does not re-appear until 1786. The other existing collections are re-arranged into five numbered collections, and a number of other collections. The post-1809 rentals have been treated differently.

Estate rentals

Estate rentals 1804-1899. Since, by 1808/9, the Wynnstay estate was more or less fully grown, each indentifiable unit in this group has been treated separately (although the rents might be gathered by the same collector). In many cases (e.g. Manor of Cyfeiliog chief rents), details concerning a particular estate will be found in one continuous list from 1808 to 1899. However, many estates were brought together in the re-arrangement of the system which took place during the early 1860s. In 1885, another change occurred following the death of Sir Watkin Williams Wynn, 6th bart. The collections or estates are arranged as follows: (1) Arwystli collection, 1808-1898; (2) Arwystli chief rents, 1804-1898; (3) Manor of Cyfeiliog, 1809-1861; (4) Manor of Cyfeiliog chief rents, 1808-1899; (5) Llwydiarth estate, 1809-1861; (6) Llangedwyn collection, 1809-1861; (7) Llansilin collection, 1809-1860; (8) Lordship/Manor of Cynllaith Owain chief rents 1808-1896; (9) Glan-llyn estate, 1809-1898; (10) Much Wenlock collection, 1810-1858; (11) Oswestry/Llanforda estate, 1809-1860; (12) Vale of Clwyd/Ruthin estate, 1809-1898; (13) Maenan lordship, 1809-1857; (14) Wynnstay collection, 1810-1860; (15) Trefarclawdd and Overley Hall Colliery payments, 1809-1822; (16) 'Rental, Freehold Property', 1813-1821; (17) Llanfair Caereinion tithes, 1815-1861; (18) Llwynymaen estate, 1839-1854; (19) Wynnstay fee farm rents, 1860-1898; (20) Farm and cottage rents, 1863-1898; (21) Encroachments in the manors of Cyfeiliog and Arwystli, 1874-1898; (22) 'Rents for Sporting', 1874-1899; (23) Mine rents and royalties, 1877-1898.

Estate rentals pre-1772

Estate rentals pre-1772. See also Wynnstay MS 86 (described elsewhere in this hierarchical structure with the other Wynnstay MSS) for early accounts and rentals (1300/1 onwards). Since this rental was deposited at NLW some years before the arrival of the main series of rentals and has been known as Wynnstay MS 86 for many years, it was deemed best not to alter this reference number, and not to include the volume in the general series of Wynnstay Rentals.
