Correspondence of Charlotte A. M. Johnes (1825-1911),

Daughter of John Johnes (1800-1876) and Elizabeth (nee Edwardes, 1800-1848), and wife of C. C. Cookman (m. 1848). She resumed the surname of Johnes after her father's death in 1876. Arranged into letters received, 1852-1911 (L 4336-5142), and sent, [c.1848]-1882 (L 5143-5182).

Deeds, letters and papers, 1688-1803, and a note (late 19 cent.), relating mainly to Thomas Johnes (d. 1733), Thomas Johnes (d. 1751), Thomas Johnes (d. 1780) of Croft Castle, and John Jones (d. 1781) of Dolaucothi. Some of the earlier deeds concern the Powell family of Cwmellan, co. Rad., into which Thomas Johnes (d. 1751) married. The deeds as a whole concern properties in co's Card., Carm., Mont. and Rad. Arranged chronologically, with a few exceptions.

Letters, mainly from Thomas Johnes (d. 1780) of Croft Castle and Ludlow to his brother John Johnes (d. 1781) of Dolaucothi. Also included are six letters from Mrs Elizabeth Johnes of Croft Castle (V 10/66-71) and one from Mrs Grace Johnes (V 10/72). They concern personal, financial, estate and election matters. Some loose letters have been added to this volume, and the contents renumbered accordingly. Arranged chronologically according to sender. See also V 14, comprising letters from T. Johnes to J. The papers deal with elections, legal matters, taxes, church affairs, presentments of manors etc. The letters are arranged chronoligically, and the papers are arranged chronologically in two groups.

They are mainly concerned with estate and financial matters, including John Johnes's purchase of Dolaucothi from Thomas Johnes of Hafod in 1790, and his dealings with Thomas Johnes's mother concerning the Dolaucothi purchase.
