Estate and family records of Mansel, later Talbot, of Penrice, and its estates in Gower, Glamorgan, from the 16th cent.; including records of Margam Abbey, 12-19th cent., including charters from its foundation in c. 1147, together with royal charters, charter rolls and papal bulls, which form one of the most complete series of archives of any medieval abbey in Great Britain; substantial early archives for Penrice, and other estates, mostly in Glamorgan; manorial records for the manor of Margam Abbey and others; early records of the coal industry in Glamorgan; a large group of Mansel correspondence, 1568-1848, along with some papers relating to Williams of Plas Dyffryn Clydach, largely literary, 17th cent.-18 cent.

The file includes the appointment of Thomas Watkins as bailiff or collector of Henry Earl of Pembroke in the lordships of Usk, Caerleon and Trelleck, 1585; receipts for rents and duties in Glamorgan, 1587-1597; bailiff’s correspondence, Cardiff, 1588, and Chepstow, 1595; copy of the book of fines in Monmouthshire and Glamorgan delivered to Rowland Morgan, 1593; extracts of accounts of fines and amercements in the manors of Neath, Tir Iarll, Dyffryn, ?Dowlais, Llantwit Raleigh, Rhuthin, Malpas, 1594-1595; accounts of timber in the chase and forest of Wysewood by George Catchmay, 1597, repair of the court house at Miskin, duty payments of poultry in the manor of Trelleck [late 16th cent]; charges of Walter Bagott for alienations in the manor of Bromley and Bagott, Staffordshire, 1614; the petition of William Adams, bailiff of [?V..y..], relating to transgressions by tenants; and assignment by Thomas Kingstone of Ramsbury, Wiltshire, of a bond in which Philip Earl of Pembroke (dec.) had become bound for the payment of several previous bond debts of T.K., 1687/8.

Lease for 21 years by Jeffrey William John David Richard of Lanrydean, co. Glam., yeoman, to Bevys Bullmer of Lutton, Northamptonshire, Esquire, of the coal works, and cole veines in the lands called . . . Parke - Egloe, in p. Lanrydean, at an annual rent of a quarter of a 'waye' of coal.

Lease for 3 years by Thomas, Lord Mansel, Baron of Margam, P.C., to Jenkin Lewis of Margam, of veins of coal and coal works, in land on the north side of the high road leading from Pyle to Margam, and within the hundred of Trissent, at a yearly rent of £50. Draft lease by Edward Herbert of Swanzey, co. Glam., esq., an infant, and Jane Herbert of Whitefryers, near Cardiff, spinster, and another, his guardians, to Sir Thomas Mansell of Margam, bart, Controller of the Royal Household, of all the coals and coalworks in the Parish of Swanzey. Period of lease and amount of rent not filled in.

Lease for 99 years determinable on three lives by Edward Thomas of Lamihangle, co. Glam., and Robert Thomas, his son and heir, of Cowbridge, to William Seys of Wibley Castle, same county, of all the 'coales, veines, and mines of coales, coaleworkes, pitts, mouths, sinks and gutters' in lands held by the said William in Lanridian and Loughour, same co., with 'power to digg new pitts; from 3rd Nov. last, , paying sixpence for every weigh of coals, at every Michaelmas', etc.

Assignment by William Bassett to John Rumsey of the Inner Temple, London, gent., of a lease made to him by Philip [Herbert], Earl of Pembroke and Montgomery, Baron Herbert of Cardiff, on 24 Mov. 1665 [i.e. no. 4821] of royalties of coal and minerals in the manors of Landimore Wibley, and Reynoldstone, co. Glam., in consideration of payment of the rents therein mentioned. Small green wax seal; illegible. Signed: William Bassett.

Lease for 21 years by Fulke, Lord Brooke, Baron Brooke of Beauchamp Court, Warwickshire, to John Llewelin of Ynisgerone, co. Glam., and Leyson Llewelin of Cadoxton Juxta Neath, his son, of veins, seams, and mines of coals and coal works in the lands of the said Lord Brooke, in p. Lanridian, and to make pits, etc., at a royalty of 2s. 6d. for every weigh of coal wrought, with specified conditions, etc.

Assignment of lease for 21 years originally granted by Phillippe [Herbert], Earl of Pembroke, to William Bassett of Landimoore, gentleman, by John Rumseve of the Inner Temple, London, gentleman, to Richard Hudson of Pentirch, of all royalties and benefits of minerals, coalmines, and veins of coalworks in the Manors of Landimore, Wibley, and Reynoldston, at a yearly rent of £20, and by the said William assigned to the said John Rumseye.

Counterpart lease for 21 years by the William [Herbert], Earl of Pembroke, P.C. K.G., to, William Herbert, alias Harbert, of Swansey, Esq., to erect coal works in the lordships and manors of Landimore and Wibley, and dispose of the coals at a royalty of sixpence for every weigh of coal so obtained. Lease for 21 years by Phillip [Herbert], Earl of Pembroke, to William Bassett of Landimour, gentleman, of all the royalties and benefits of all minerals and caol mines, coal works, etc., lying, growing, and being in any of the marshes, moores, commons, clifts, or other wasts and lands of the said Earl within the severall manors of Landimour, Wibley, and Reynoldston', with liberty to dig pits, etc., and to dispose of the coals, , at a yearly rent of £20.
