E. Marsh, Treasury Chambers, Whitehall. The improvement scheme at Penmaenbach and Penyclip presents a number of engineering difficulties, and further deliberations are necessary on the precise scope and ultimate form of the works. A letter has recently been sent by Mr Herbert Morrison to the Caernarvonshire County Council confirming the terms of the contribution from the Road Fund, and work should commence shortly. It is not true that grants are being withheld because the money is required for other purposes.

Herbert Morrison, Home Secretary, Whitehall, London. Has just received the Report of the Committee on Damaged Licensed Premises and Reconstruction, and is indebted to Huw T. Edwards for devoting so much time to the work of the Committee. The Report is clearly 'an important contribution to the solution of a by no means straightforward problem'. The difficulties are increased by its highly technical character.

Huw Morris Jones, Wendon, Penygarth, Caernarvon (University College of North Wales, Bangor). Was dismayed to read that Flintshire proposes to appoint a full-time Labour organiser at an annual cost of £800. The North Wales Labour Federation agreed last November to set up a committee to report on the situation in North Wales. Recalls that Huw T. Edwards agreed to act as the convenor of that Committee. 'It appears then that this unilateral action on the part of Flintshire indicated your own lack of faith in the recommendation of the Federation and that the agreement of last November is meaningless'. The situation needs to be reviewed afresh, and advice given to the constituency parties.

William Whiteley, Treasury, 12 Downing Street. Morgan Phillips has sent on Huw T. Edwards's letter listing eight persons whom he considers to be worthy recipients of honours. Would like him to select two persons. There would seem to be half a million people anxious to secure honours. 'Private and Confidential'. For reply see A2/10.

Ernest Bevin, Foreign Office, London SW1. Is very grateful for the contribution made at the Biennial Conference at Hastings on the occasion of his retirement. 'It was a great pleasure to have had the opportunity of taking part in the foundation of the amalgamation and of assisting in its development, and now to witness its magnificent hour and influence'. Would have liked to be able to hear the debates at the Congress. Very much appreciates the gift, although he is now involved in a different kind of work.

R. Stafford Cripps, Board of Trade, Millbank, London SW1. Has considered Huw T. Edwards's suggestion that the Wales and Monmouthshire Industrial Estate Company should be considered a suitable recipient of grants for North Wales purposes under the Development and Road Funds Act, 1909. Believes that local interests in North Wales should devise practical schemes for the utilisation of local resources. Believes that discussions should take place between representatives from North Wales and the Development Commission. Is aware of the recent proposal for the establishment of a woollen factory in Merionethshire. Is anxious to see a tangible result.
