Gareth Vaughan Jones Papers

The group donated in 1987 comprises letters from Gareth Vaughan Jones to his family, 1922-1935, many while on foreign travels; letters to him, 1919-1934; a curriculum vitae and references, 1925-1934; research notes, [c. 1930]-1932; typescripts, drafts and notes for articles and lectures, [1925]-[1935]; typescripts of press articles written by Gareth Vaughan Jones during his world tour, 1934-1935; newspaper cuttings of Western Mail articles by Gareth Vaughan Jones, [1933]-[1935]; papers concerning Gareth Vaughan Jones's death, [1935]; printed books, 1926-1927, and papers of his father Dr Edgar Jones, including letters, 1890-1952; letters concerning the death of Gareth Vaughan Jones, 1935; press cuttings and papers relating to his time as head of Barry County School, 1906-1935; typescripts of broadcasts and talks, 1939-1945; and papers relating to his death, 1953. The papers deposited in 2007, 2010 and 2011 comprise family papers, 1894-2007, including a few papers relating to Gareth Vaughan Jones's parents Major Edgar Jones and Mrs Annie Gwen Jones; papers of, or relating to, Gareth Vaughan Jones, 1916-2002, including diaries, notebooks, press cuttings of his articles, letters, mainly from him to his parents and other members of his family, and papers relating to his capture and subsequent murder in August 1935; and the papers of Dr Siriol Colley, 1922-2004, mainly deriving from her researches into her uncle's life, work and death, including transcripts and photocopies of relevant source materials. The material donated in July 2011 comprises six pocket diaries containing detailed observations and comments on Gareth Jones's travels, mainly in Germany and Russia, between 1931 and 1934, together with the last passport issued to him in 1930, and a few stray items which have been incorporated in the previous files. Another group includes photographs, postcards, negatives and lantern slides, [c. 1900 - c. 1990].

Two boxes containing additional papers were received in July 2018.

Gareth Vaughan Jones's personal copy of Russische National-Bibliothek (Leipzig, 1881), with the following notes inscribed in the front of the volume “Gareth Vaughan Jones, Trinity College, Cambridge. Riga, den 4 August, 1927”; February 2025.

A small chest presented to Edgar Jones, Gareth Vaughan Jones' father, on being granted the Freedom of the Borough of Barry in 1950, together with a certificate marking the occasion, related press cuttings, photographs of Edgar, Annie Gwen, Gareth and Raymond Jones, a photograph of Gareth Jones' dog, and a letter from the University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire following the death of Edgar's brother, Raymond, during the Great War; together with an article by the depositor about Annie Gwen Jones; March 2025.

'Experiences in Russia - 1931: A Diary'

Copy of ‘Experiences in Russia - 1931: A Diary’ (published by The Alton Press, Inc., Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, 1932). It was published anonymously with the preface written by Gareth R. V. Jones. The flyleaf bears the autograph of Edyth Huckabee, Pittsburgh and the stamp of W. Huckabee.

Items found inside front cover of 'Low's Russian Sketchbook'

An envelope containing loose items that were found inside the front cover of ‘Low’s Russian Sketchbook’, namely a compliment slip from the publishers with a handwritten note stating “sent by the author’s request & with his compliments”; a press cutting relating to the publication; three unused Moscovian postcards; a piece of paper folded and sewn together to form an envelope, with a date stamp of 7 February 1933; and a receipt for the payment by Dr Edgar Jones for a portrait drawing and drawings of Dr Thomas Jones from W[illiam] Rothenstein, 3 October 1922.

Letter from Shitab Rai

Thank you very much for your letter of 29 Ramadan asking me to keep an eye on the harkarahs who carry post from Nawab Shuja al-Dalaulah between Allahabad and Azimabad and instructing them not to disclose the contents of the letters to anyone else, along with a letter from Hafiz Rahmat Khan Bahadur dated 11 Shawwal. -- As far as the matter of post from Nawab Shuja al-Daulah is concerned I have instructed all harkarahs dealing with this post that they should not allow anyone to interfere in this post. Meanwhile, the letter of Nawab Hafiz al-Mulk Bahadur was sent the same day. You have complained about the delay in receiving the revenue money from here. I have never neglected my duties in this respect and have worked hard day and night to achieve the maximum results. I have recently reorganized the system of collection and a few days ago had sent the details to Nawab Muin al-Daulah Sayyid Muhammad Raza Khan Bahadur Muzaffar Jang who may have already informed you about this. Letter from Muhammad Akbar Khan Bahadur

I have already sent a letter in the letter-bag of Nawab Shuja al-Daulah Bahadur and another through Colonel Barker Sahib. Another letter was sent through my messenger directly to you but I have not received a reply to any of these letters. Now, on 9 Sha'ban, my messengers are bringing a khartiah of Nawab Shuja al-Daulah, along with my own letter. I will be grateful if you could give your replies to these letters to my messengers so that I could forward them to Nawab Shuja al-Daulah Bahadur.
