A miscellany, 1818-1860, much of it in the form of printed broadsheets, circulars, etc. It includes material relating to the Cambrian Society, 1818; the Gwent and Dyfed Royal Eisteddfod and Musical Festival, Cardiff, 1834; Beddgelert National Schools, 1858; the Welsh Charity School, Ashford, Middlesex, 1859; the Swansea Grammar School, 1848; the South Wales Training College [for Teachers], Carmarthen; the Society for the Publication of Ancient Welsh Manuscripts, 1838; a printed letter on Roman remains by George Grant Francis, Swansea, 1840; a list of some persons who subscribed in 1818 towards building a school-room at Llandaff; a catalogue of Welsh manuscripts in the library of Sir Thomas Phillipps transcribed by Lady Charlotte Guest; etc.

Rio Tinto Finance and Exploration Limited

Correspondence and papers, 1969-73, concerning Emrys Bennett Owen's work as a freelance surveyor for the Rio Tinto Finance and Exploration Ltd in connection with its proposed mineral exploration in the Mawddach estuary, in the Barmouth and Dolgellau areas, in Coed-y-Brenin Forest, Dolgellau, and Cwm Hermon, Llanfachreth. There are also papers deriving from work undertaken by EBO in relation to the following properties: Cae'r Ffynnon, Dolgellau; Blaenlliw Isaf and Blaenlliw Uchaf, Llanuwchllyn; Nantddu and Amnodd farms, Llanycil; Coed Mawr, Llanfachreth; and the activities of the Merioneth Mining Company.

Five holograph letters from H[ugh] R[obert] Hughes from Kinmel Park, Abergele, to Henry Howard [? Colonel Henry Richard Lloyd Howard], [18]92-1909 (notes, in reply to queries, on John Vaughan of Caergai, his wife Margaret, dr. of Hedd Lloyd of Hafodunos, whom he married in 1698, the arms and some of the descendants of the said John and Margaret, Rowland Vaughan of Caergai 'a Welsh Poet of some eminence . . . born in 1560', Edward Lloyd of Tyddyn born in 1650 and his two wives, Sir George Wynne [1st bart. of Leeswood, co. Flint] and his wife Margaret Lloyd, an ? inscription at Penucha grin, the Jones family of Penucha grin, David Lloyd of Tyddyn, brother of John Lloyd of Wygfair, [mid 17th cent.], and the Coytmore family of Coytmore; and comments on the 1909 budget).

Miscellaneous items, mostly accumulated by John Thomas, [1850s]-[1870s], including englynion to him by David Griffiths (Clwydfardd), Lewis William Lewis (Llew Llwyfo), Titus Lewis (Titan), and David Williams (Alaw Goch) (ff. 1-5); and sketches and drawings, including those depicting the harp (ff. 11-14), a sketch of Franz Liszt (f. 21), and engravings of Welsh and other views. Also included is a letter, 1830, from the Marquis de Lafayette (f. 17).

A volume belonging to the Rev. Ellis Thomas Davies, Independent minister, Abergele, containing poems and greetings in English and Welsh, autographs and sketches, 1849-1885, mainly by other Independent ministers, including Hugh Hughes (Huw Tegai), [1849x1864] (f. 3), Rowland Williams (Hwfa Môn), [1851], 1858 (ff. 3, 18 verso), William Williams (Caledfryn), 1852 (f. 5), William Rees (Gwilym Hiraethog), [1850s] (ff. 8, 55), Thomas Roberts (Scorpion), 1853 (f. 9), Michael D. Jones, [1857x1879] (f. 17), Henry Rees, 1863 (f. 50), Samuel Roberts (S.R.), 1867 (f. 54 verso), R. T. Evans, Oshkosh, Wisconsin, 1881 (f. 57 verso), Robert Parry (Robyn Ddu Eryri), 1880 (f. 98 verso), and many others including family members.
Among the works quoted are a Latin poem by George Herbert (f. 1 verso) and a Bengali version of John 3.16, 1885 (f. 75 verso). There are englynion in English by David Griffith (Clwydfardd) referring to a visit to the Great Exhibition, 1851 (f. 77). Also included are sketches of a dog, 1878 (f. 31), and of Abergele, 1866 (f. 67).

The letters contain references to the Liverpool Welsh National Society; Moriah Calvinistic Methodist church literary society, Caernarvon; St David's Society of Toronto; and Clwydfardd's health, last illness and death, etc.

They include englynon by Clwydfardd, e.g. 'Ar ymweliad ei rasusolaf Fawrhydi Tywysog Cymru an gwyl Genedlaethol yn Nghaernarfon Gorphenaf [1894]'; 'Ir diweddar barchedig Edward Anwyl Cadeirydd y Dalaith Ogleddol', etc.; englynion addressed to Clwydfardd by Richard Parry (Gwalchmai) and John Cadvan Davies (Cadvan) (1891); copies of the proclamations of meetings of Gorsedd Beirdd Ynys Prydain at national and provincial eisteddfodau; a letter, [c. 1891], from Clwydfardd to B. Morris Lewis, Chelsea, giving particulars of nineteenth century national and other eisteddfodau; notes on the key to 'Coelbren y Beirdd', etc., by T. H. Thomas (Arlunydd Penygarn); incomplete notes on the Epistle to the Hebrews; and an incomplete eulogy of the writing pen, 1872.

Manuscript agricultural returns, 4 June 1942-4 June 1950, kept by Arthur Bennett Owen and his son Emrys Bennett Owen, of Gwyndy, Llanuwchllyn, comprising statistics of crops sown, stock, and labour employed, and of subsidies received. It appears that the information relates to farms called Llwynderw and part of Aberbiga in the parishes of Llanidloes and Trefeglwys, co Montgomery.
