Preface

The file comprises a final manuscript text of the Preface to the Anathemata, numbered 1-46 with gaps by David Jones. There is also a list of illustrations, also numbered page 1 and a note by Harman Grisewood.

A3

The file comprises a manuscript draft written in pencil and ink, which is an insertion into the text formed by A1 and A2 made after the second foliation. The pages are mostly numbered 37 by David Jones on a mixture of blue and white paper. This insertion expanded rapidly and became the second half of 'Middle-Sea and Lear-Sea', the whole of 'Angle-Land', Redriff' and 'The Lady of the Pool' and the beginning of 'Keel, Ram, Stauros'.

A5

The file comprises a manuscript draft written in pencil and ink (mostly in black ink), which corresponds to The Anathemata, pp. 61-74. Many of the pages are numbered 11, and this text forms an excursus based on the passage which occurs in A2 on a page numbered 11 in the second foliation.

A4

The file comprises a manuscript draft written in pencil and ink, which corresponds to The Anathemata, pp. 194-221, the second part of 'Mabinogi's Liturgy', but is very incomplete. Many of the pages are numbered 62 and 133-5, which shows that this text is an insertion into the A1 and A2 text begun after the second foliation. On A4.13 material from A5 has been inserted, which appears to show that the greater part of A5 predates these latest drafts of A4.

A6

The file comprises a manuscript draft dated 1949 by David Jones which includes notes for the typist on typesetting. This, combined with A7, is the nearest to the 'final' manuscript which is extant. It is written in black ink and many pages are numbered 5 A-F and 37 A-P, as well as 1-73 by David Jones. The text corresponds to the first four sections and the beginning of section V (pp. 49-61, 84-98, 110-134) of The Anathemata. See AZ for manuscripts that correspond to the missing pages 97-113, and AX and AX-Y for material corresponding to missing pages 61-82 to be inserted on folio 16.

A7

The file comprises a manuscript draft by David Jones written in black ink, which includes markings for the typist. This, combined with A6, is the nearest to the 'final' manuscript which is extant. The text corresponds to part of section V, and all of sections VI-VII except for the last page, (pp. 134-242) of The Anathemata. Many pages at the beginning are numbered 37P by David Jones.

AO

The file comprises a manuscript draft by David Jones written mainly in pencil of material relating to the typescript text of The Anathemata. Part of this material comprises lists of the sections into which the text is divided (ff.1-4). There is also a list of illustrations (f. 5), drafts of an intended insertion in the introduction (ff. 6-10), a list of corrections to the typescript text (ff. 11-12) and a list of queries (f. 13). The remainder is material relating to notes on the text.

AX-Y

The file comprises a manuscript in black ink, numbered pages 9 (a-v) in red by David Jones. These pages correspond to pages 61-82 of The Anathemata, which are missing in A6. From this was typed '9A-9 Omega' of the typescript, therefore it must have been written after the first typescript had been made.

AZ

The file comprises a manuscript in black ink and pencil with some typed sheets, numbered pages 24, 25 (a-k) and 28 by David Jones. These pages correspond to pages 97-113 of The Anathemata, which are missing in A6. The typescript sheets have been typed on a machine other than either of the two used in making the typescript text of The Anathemata, perhaps by David Jones himself. At some time subsequent to his receiving the typescript of A6 David Jones set about revising and expanding the material on pages 24, 25, 26 and 28.

AN

The file comprises a manuscript in black ink and pencil of the draft notes on the text of The Anathemata. This material is earlier in date than the typescript text.

AD

The file comprises a manuscript in pencil of material added to the proofs of the preface, explaining why the notes are printed with the text, and also an acknowledgement dated April 1952. There is also a note by Harman Grisewood (f. 6).

AC

Black folder 'C'

The file comprises a black folder which David Jones used when he was writing The Anathemata, entitled 'AN C text for revision and incorp[orate]'. The folder now contains a miscellany of manuscript drafts, including wrappers entitled 'Green folder A', 'Manuscript B', and 'Manuscript C'. There is also a note by Harman Grisewood on David Jones' use of the folder, and a note by Daniel Huws, NLW, on the original contents of the folder (ff. 1-2).

Early drafts

The file comprises sheets identified by René Hague as being manuscripts for The Anathemata, unused by David Jones for the published version. They are variations on half a dozen or so passages. They have been arranged by Tom Golpaugh into sections and identified as follows: material relating to Manuscript A1 (ff. 1-13); A2 (ff. 16-19, 110-113, 116-122, 160-183, 186-193, 200-216); A3 (fols. 123-139, 141-159); ); A4 (ff. 20-102, 194-199); A5 (ff. 103-105); AY (f. 106). See notes by Tom Golpaugh (ff. i-viii). Some of the other pages (ff. 107-216) are numbered 5, 37, 62A, 37P, 46A-F, 54A, 243 and 192-3 by David Jones, but they are mostly unnumbered and are written in ink and pencil on a variety of papers. There is also a page of typescript (f. 107) and a page proof (f. 217) . The pages of The Anathemata to which they correspond is written on the bottom left hand corner of some of the leaves. A letter from David Jones to 'J.S' [Thornton, Oxford] dated 1958 discusses references to 'Sarras' on f. 221. Folios 218-20 (numbered 192-3) belong to In Parenthesis. Folio 140 belongs with LR 8/6.

The file comprises material found amongst the manuscripts of The Anathemata, but apparently not connected with that work. They include a few drawings, note to page 72, a draft letter referring to Eric Gill, a draft letter to 'Elri' [Valerie Wynne-Williams], correction to a page 178, and some pages possibly relating to Epoch and Artist.

Preface and notes
