Red Kite Country,

Original file of letters, memoranda, papers and publications relating to the Welsh Office / Development Board for Rural Wales / RSPB / Welsh Tourist Board initiative to develop the Spotting the Red Kite (the Red Kite Trail) project, the name being changed c.Feb. 1994 to Red Kite Country. A letter in the general correspondence file for 1990-2011 (E 32 below) mentions that the initiative expired in 1997.

Lists of 'gled', 'kit' and 'puttock' placenames from the Ordnance Survey 1:50,000 Gazetteer, 4th ed., 1999; lists of latest breeding record or presence by county, statements on the distribution of kites in British bird books published at least 1802-1959; extracts relating to kites from county histories, faunas and ornithologies, including the 'Victoria County History' for England and the 'Old' and 'New Statistical Accounts' for Scotland. Also several references to kites in archaeological sites and churchwardens' accounts.

Kite Committee papers,

Original file of William Condry's copies of Kite Committee papers, including reports and minutes of the West Wales Field Society, 1949-1950; annual reports on the kite's status and nesting season, 1950-1955; notes on, minutes of and reports to Kite Committee meetings, 1958-1971 and 1974; a draft report on the desertion of two kite nests after filming operations by the RSPB film unit, 1970. Several of the papers, containing locations of nests then in use, are marked confidential.

Includes a letter to R.S. Thomas asking him to be a patron of the new trust, and his reply declining the offer, Jan. 1997.

Original file of papers relating to the British Trust for Ornithology Ornithological Atlas, mainly relating to the presentation of the breeding distribution of rarer breeding species in Wales, including kite, hen harrier, peregrine, chough, little tern, gossander and dotterel. Includes "Personally I would feel happier if the system did not show precisely the number of 10 km. squares with [kite] breeding records, mainly because this betrays the preponderance of Cardiganshire records compared with Carmarthenshire ones ... and is therefore against our agreed policy of keeping quiet about the strength of the Cardiganshire population" (letter from Peter Davis to Col Salmon, Feb. 1970) (see also B 4).

Reports on marked birds,

Original file of reports of and notes on ringed or tagged dead kites, including the recovery of a ringed female (HT27208, ringed June 1988, found dead May 2012), probably the oldest recorded Welsh kite, displacing HW08418, a male that died at Tregaron in March 1992, a month younger than this new bird, 2012; and the recovery of HT25680, a male ringed at Talsarn, June 1990, found dead Aber-arth, at 23.5 years the third oldest kite known by ringing, Jan. 2014.

Includes letters from Lelie Brown of Karen, Kenya, about his book 'British birds of prey' (New Naturalist Library no. 60, 1976), 1974-1975; D. A. Orton of Alverchurch watcher's diary and report to RSPB Newtown on a peregrine's nest 'on DG Rocks', 1975; and a letter from Roger Lovegrove, RSPB Wales Officer, that "should you have any reasonably decent corpse in your hands in the next couple of years" it would be a great favour if it could be frozen and lent to Charles Tunnicliffe, "as he has a great ambition to add Red Kite to this collection" of measured drawings of British birds, 1975.

Original file of Welsh Kite Trust/Welsh Kite Watchers' Committee annual meeting agendas, minutes and related papers. Includes a copy of the Wales Raptor Study Group report, 2004; and heads of agreement (unsigned) between the Golden Eagle Trust of Ireland and the Welsh Kite Trust for the supply of 265 young Welsh red kites over five years for release in Co. Down and Co. Wicklow, 2007.
