Commercial Department files relating to the sourcing, allocation and distribution of timber used for pitwood in South Wales collieries. Material includes letters and correspondence, circulars, barter agreements, statistics, colliery reply forms, extracts of committee minutes, and related papers.

Coal and transport industries,

Commercial Department files relating to various issues and practices in the coal and transportation industries which affected the Coal Owners Association's interests. Much of the material concerns the transportation of coal by rail and by ship, and the export, import, mechanical and labour issues associated with it. Files may include letters and correspondence, circulars, committee minutes and reports, statistics, and material relating to government rules and regulations.

Mining Association of Great Britain,

Correspondence with the Mining Association of Great Britain relating to the coal mining industry in general, and also relating to specific topics such as pitwood, unemployment insurance, holiday clubs, workmen's compensation, Coal Utilisation Council research, the Welfare Fund Bill, pit ponies, miners' nystagmus, trade union membership, the provision of men and labour during war time, and post-war celebrations. General correspondence files may include not only letters but also memoranda, notes for deputations, and meeting notices, agenda and papers for meetings of the Central, Transport, Joint Standing Consultative, Propaganda, Timber, Wagon, Joint National Negotiating, and Post-War Research Committees.

Minutes of meetings of the Board of Conciliation for the Coal Trade of Monmouthshire and South Wales. Included in the minutes are accounts of disputes and strikes at various collieries brought to the attention of the Board, and reports of sub-committees appointed to investigate such matters and any final settlements reached. The minutes also include discussions of the Board regarding changes in the general wage rate in the coalfield and decisions of independent chairmen, as well as discussions on other matters affecting the entire coalfield, such as the dates and durations of holidays, concessionary coal supplies, the non-union question, deputations, the settlements of price lists for specific coal seams, and the Eight Hours Act. Also included are meeting minutes and recommendations and resolutions of the Owners' representatives on the Conciliation Board to the Coal Owners Association on a wide range of matters concerning the mining industry in South Wales.

Transcripts of Conciliation Board meetings - and meetings of the various committees and sub-committees of the Conciliation Board - consisting of representatives of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association and representatives of various sections of workers. Discussions mainly concerned the interpretation of Conciliation Board Agreements and Awards, and issues such as minimum wage rates, the Eight Hours Act, pay tickets, unemployment, subsistence wages, re-grading of workmen, compensation claims, pension schemes and holiday pay.

Changes in wages,

Verbatim minutes from the shorthand notes of Conciliation Board meetings, including those before an Independent Chairman, considering applications from the owners, or the workmen, for changes in wage rates. Material may include supporting documents such as memoranda, reports and statistical tables.

Agreements and awards,

Memoranda of Agreements which contain generally lists of the representatives from both the owners' and workmens' sides, the decision regarding general rate of wages or other topics in dispute, rules of procedure and the effective dates of the Agreement, and relevant memoranda and statements. They may also include printed notices which were to be displayed by the collieries. Many Agreements contain original signatures.

Transcripts of joint meetings of the Craftsmen's Conciliation Board, and also of the Craftsmen's Joint Board, between representatives of the Coal Owners Association and representatives of the workmen to discuss problems. The workmen were represented by groups under several different names, including the Monmouthshire and South Wales Colliery Enginemen, Stokers and Craftsmen's Association; the Monmouthshire and South Wales Colliery Enginemen, Boilermen and Craftsmen's Association; or the Monmouthshire and South Wales Colliery Enginemen, Stokers and Craftsmen's Union (Enginemen's Wages Committee). The minutes record negotiations of wage agreements and their interpretation and application; discussions and decisions on individual cases in dispute, mainly involving wages and conditions of work; and also the refusal of some companies to allow their winding enginemen to sign an agreement.

Verbatim transcripts of meetings of the Windingmen's Conciliation Board, which included representatives of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association and representatives of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Colliery Winding Enginemen's Association. Matters discussed include standard wage rates, time agreements, holiday pay, the revision of agreements, work stoppages, the termination of contracts, trade depression and specific issues between management and workmen at numerous individual collieries.

Transcripts of meetings of the Joint Examiners' Conciliation Board, also referred to as the Board of Conciliation for the Owners and Officials of Collieries in South Wales and Monmouthshire. Also transcripts of meetings between representatives of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association and representatives of the South Wales Branch of the National Association of Colliery Managers (Colliery Managers Joint Committee). The matters discussed include wage increases; the War and Sankey wages; holidays; overtime payments; the creation of a superannuation (pension) scheme; membership of the Examiners' Association; seniority of service at collieries; remuneration paid to Firemen and Shotsmen; work stoppages; managers suffering from silicosis or pnuemoconiosis; government control of mining operations.

Transcripts of meetings of the Hauliers' Conciliation Board, between representatives of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association and representatives of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Master Hauliers and Traffic Foremen's Association. The majority of the meetings are concerned with the interpretation of formal Conciliation Board Agreements by various member collieries, and the resulting disputes over wages and working conditions.

Joint Emergency Committee,

Material relating to the work of the Joint Emergency Committee, which was made up of owners' and workmen's representatives, to consider specific disputes including the strike of 1893 and disputes concerning the Bonus Turn for pieceworkers in 1917. Material comprises minutes of meetings, with some correspondence included.
