A supplementary collection of manuscript material, printed books and engraved portraits relating to the Owen family of Glansevern and the connected families of Jones, Johnes and Humphreys-Owen. The manuscript material consists mainly of personalia and letters. The most substantial group comprises over 1200 letters from A. C. Humphreys-Owen, MP for Montgomery, to his wife, 1878-1905 (no's 14915-16186). There are only about 30 letters before 1884 but thereafter they become much more frequent and contain detailed reports and comments on the writer's activities mainly in connection with political and educational matters. There are a few items relating to most members of the Owen and related families from the late eighteenth century onwards. The depositor has added much to their value by providing explanatory information and details of family background. The twenty-five volumes of printed books include, among others, Richard Bloome, Brittania (London, 1673); William Salmon, Botanologia (London, 1710); A description of all the cities & borough towns in England and Wales ... with their arms & common seals ...(London: printed for Geo. Bickham, [17--]); Thomas Pennant, A tour in Wales (2 vols. London, 1784). Volume 2 of the latter contains manuscript additions and corrections on slips and sheets of paper which appear to be in the hand of the author. They were inserted, according to a note at the beginning of the volume, dated at Calcutta 27 Oct. 1788, by Robert Chambers, who received them as waste paper used in packing books sent to him from England. A collection of engraved portraits: Vice-Admiral Sir Edward Brace, H.C.B.: mezzotint engraving by C. E. Wagstaff after H. W. Pickersgill; Edward Johnes (b. 1773) of Garthmyl, Mont.: lithograph by T. Farmland after W. Jones, 1840; Rev. Thomas Jones (1756-1807) of Trinity College, Cambridge: line engraving; Admiral Sir Edward William Campbell Rich Owen (1771-1849): mezzotint by G. T. Payne after W. H. Pickersgill 1849; and Admiral Sir Home Riggs Popham (1762-1820) mezzotint engraving by A. Cardon after Mather Brown, 1807.
