Scripts,

Various scripts, [1953]-1954, of Under Milk Wood, some annotated by Dylan Thomas and Daniel Jones, and including the French translation, 'Au Bois Lacte'; together with related papers, 1955-1996. The production was first broadcast on the BBC Third Programme, 25 January 1954, and was awarded the Italia Prize for best literary or dramatic radio programme in the same year.

'New York' script,

Script, [1953], (71 pp.), of 'Under Milk Wood', with annotations in the hands of both Dylan Thomas and Daniel Jones. The wallet, in which the script was enclosed, is labelled "1 of New York scripts".

Douglas Cleverdon script,

Script, 1954, (73 pp.), belonging to the producer Douglas Cleverdon, of the BBC production of 'Under Milk Wood'. Previously enclosed in a folder labelled 'BBC Script B2', it contains a brief note in pencil on the front page by Philip H. Burton.

Richard Bebb script,

Script, 1954, (73 pp.), of the BBC production of 'Under Milk Wood', containing a note in biro on the front page from Richard Bebb, who played the second voice, to Richard Jones; together with three letters, 1995-1996, from the latter to Jeff Towns, and three press cuttings and a programme, 1958-1988, relating to the play.

Italia Prize script,

Bound copy of the script of Under Milk Wood, 1954, submitted by the BBC for the Italia Prize, consisting of a parallel French and English text, with notes on names and places, and an introduction; this appears to have been Daniel Jones's personal copy and is signed by him. Also included is a published list, 1955, of winners of the Prix Italia 1954. Under Milk Wood was awarded the Prix Italia for a literary or dramatic radio programme.

Au Bois Lacte,

French translation, 1954, by Jacques B. Brunius of 'Under Milk Wood', entitled 'Au Bois Lacte', which appears to have been prepared for the Italia Prize submission; includes notes on names and places, and an introduction at the beginning of the script.

Papers, [1953]-1957, relating to the publication of Under Milk Wood, among them manuscript and typescript drafts, 1954, of Daniel Jones's Preface; a draft contents table, [1954]; typescript 'Notes on pronunciation', [1954]; an alternative typescript Preface by Daniel Jones, stamped 20 Dec[ember] 1957; a typescript list of amendments to the page proofs by Daniel Jones and Douglas Cleverdon; and two lists of emendations to the BBC script of UMW, [1953]x1954. The file also contains correspondence, 1954-1986, mainly addressed to Daniel Jones, with two replies by him, regarding Under Milk Wood, including the recording of the BBC production of the play, permission to use DJ's music, and royalties derived from the work.

Second Preface,

Typescript copy, 1974, (5 pp.) of a revised Preface by Daniel Jones for Under Milk Wood, together with proofs of the edition published in 1975 which comprises the first and second Prefaces (1954 and 1974); both typescript and proofs contain occasional corrections in his hand. Also included is related correspondence, 1974, between Daniel Jones and the publishers, J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd.

Two sets of page proofs, 1954, of Under Milk Wood, one of which is unbound in seven gatherings, and signed by Daniel Jones; an additional set of the first six pages of the text contains numerous corrections.

Correspondence, November 1953 - February 1954, comprising eighteen typescript letters and one telegram, mostly from Douglas Cleverdon, Features Department, BBC, to Daniel Jones, and including three replies (one unsigned) from Daniel Jones, a copy of a letter from Douglas Cleverdon to Ruthven Todd, and a letter from Aneirin Talfan Davies to Daniel Jones. They discuss the radio production of Under Milk Wood, including Daniel Jones's compositions, arrangements for the recording, and copyright. Among the papers is an undated black and white photograph of Douglas Cleverdon and Daniel Jones.
