Pocket-book,

A pocket-book which belonged to 'Edwd William Junr' [i.e Iolo Morganwg] containing entries made [c. 1767]-[?1775] (undated after 1771). The entries consist of accounts in connection with work done, etc., 'englynion', 'cywyddau' (incomplete), some English verse, lists of words taken mainly from the poems of Dafydd ap Gwilym, a few proverbs, and various memoranda including the following: 'My Dear Mother Died ye 19th day of august 1770 about half an hour past one in ye= morning'. Another note lists various items 'Reced of Mr Waters [sic]', the first two being '1numbr of ye Dictionary' (2s.) and 'ode to humanity' (6d.). Most of the 'englynion' are by EW himself, but a few are by William Robert and one or two other poets. One series (englynion by certain 17th cent. poets) may be found, with minor differences, at the beginning of John Prideaux, Euchologia; nev, Yr Athrawiaeth i arfeol Weddio... Cyfieithiad Row. Vaughan Esc. Ar Ddeisyfiad William Salesbury Esc... ([London]: E. C[otes] tros P. C[hetwin], [c. 1658], ESTC R182098). EW, who styles himself variously as 'Iorwerth ab Iorwerth' and 'Iorwerth Gwilym', has some 'englynion' addressed to 'Lewis Hopcin', 'Ieuan fardd Du', and 'Dafydd meredydd argraffydd or bontfaen', etc. The references to the poems of Dafydd ap Gwilym correspond to some extent to the numbering of the poems in the latter part of Llanover MS C3 [now NLW MS 13090E]. Other references correspond to page numbers in Edward Lhuyd's Archaeologia Britannica (1707). The handwriting varies considerably, and shows a distinct change after c. 1771.

Salmau yr Eglwys yn yr Anialwch,

The manuscript of Salmau yr Eglwys yn yr Anialwch, Cyfrol I (Merthyr Tydfil, 1812). The printed volume contains 204 hymns: the last in the manuscript collection is numbered CC. The preface appears to correspond to the printed copy except that the last paragraph but one is wanting here: there is also another draft of a preface dated 'Trefflemin, neu fal ai gelwid gynt Llanfihangel y Twyn, gerllaw'r Bont faen ym Morganwg Alban Hefin 1811' (found elsewhere among the papers). The index which appears to be a draft is to the printed volume and not to the manuscript.

The collection is similar to, but not identical with, the first pages of the second volume published by Taliesin Williams in 1834: there are some hymns in the MS which are not in the printed volume, and vice versa.
