E. R. Hergreaves, Private Secretary to the Committee of the Privy Council for Trade, Board of Trade, Millbank, London SW1. The President of the Board of Trade has asked the writer to forward to Huw T. Edwards the official notice (A1/20a) of his appointment as a member of the Wales and Monmouthshire Industrial Estates Ltd. His official notice of appointment as director of the company was sent to him in January.

Blaise Gillie, Welsh Office, Ministry of Housing and Local Government, Cathays Park, Cardiff. The writer's proposals for a change in the Secretaryship of the Council for Wales and Monmouthshire were approved orally by Huw T. Edwards. Has arranged for the change to take place as from this day. Regrets that he did not inform Huw T. Edwards of the detailed arrangements which he had in mind. Hopes that the arrangement whereby Clement will take over from Palmer will be acceptable to members of the Council. Could Huw T. Edwards tender the writer's apologies to the Council?.

'Wil Ifan' [Rev. William Evans], 14 Park Street, Bridgend. The writer cut out a picture of Pen-y-Ffrith from Y Cymro a while ago. An attempt will be made to re-build the house during the current week. Encloses a water colour sketch of the chapel (A1/201a) in the hope that Huw T. Edwards will like it. Welsh.

George Emlyn Williams, 15 Pelham Crescent, London SW7. It is difficult to know what to say about such a film. Would certainly consider recording the commentary, on the condition that the script be written by a gifted Welsh poet or essayist and that the film itself should be imaginative. Would like to be kept informed of developments and be sent a copy of the suggested commentary.

Aneurin [Bevan], House of Commons. Huw T. Edwards's point is very serious: 'These unions, of course, are now buying power inside the Labour Party by the manipulation of political affiliation'. Considers the relationship between the Labour Party and the trades unions to be 'wholly unhealthy'. Few members 'contract out', but the affiliation to the Labour Party is still rarely based on a full quota of trades union members. Consequently the political fund is subsidising the industrial fund. Is making a few discreet enquiries in an attempt to effect some remedy to the problem. Would like to have a meal with Huw T. Edwards the next time he comes up to London. 'Private & Confidential'.

Austin Strutt, Home Office, Whitehall, London SW1. Thanks for the personal and confidential letter which he plans to discuss with his cronies. Sees a difficulty over no. 9 on the list as he does not think that he could be considered as long as the future of the Board and its financial position remain undecided. 'Personal and Confidential'.

Tom Jones, Area Secretary of the Transport and General Workers' Union, Transport House, Chester Road, Shotton, Chester. Was given a free hand at the last regional committee to deal with Huw T. Edwards's book 'The History of the Union in North Wales'. The proposed funding of the publication of the book. An objection has been raised by Arthur Deakin [the general secretary of the TGWU] to the use of local funds for this purpose. The authority of the General Executive Council may be required. Urged Deakin to allow the Union to be responsible for the publication of Huw T. Edwards's work.

C. R. Attlee, House of Commons, London SW1. The Russian proposal as revealed in the broadcast is 'a completely free united Germany under no restraint whatever and able to arm itself to any extent'. The current opposition to the German contribution to Western defence. Does not consider that the insistence on a minimum of discipline within the Labour Party is any threat to the freedom of the individual. 'Surely, the history of the Liberal Party over the past thirty years - even when they were reduced to six Members they were seldom found in the same Lobby - shows the danger of freedom lapsing into silence'. Written in reply to A2/109.

Austin Strutt, Home Office, Whitehall, London SW1. The Home Secretary, Gwilym Lloyd-George, has been invited to open the new Technical College in Flintshire. But Gl-g is aware of the disagreement between the Local Education Authority and the Minister of Education over the College. He feels, therefore, that he has to decline. If the disagreement is, however, resolved to the satisfaction of Sir David Eccles, Gl-g would be happy to perform the opening.

T. E. Nicholas, Glasynys, Aberystwyth. Considers it a tragedy that a non-Welsh speaker has been appointed in charge of the Welsh Department at the National Museum of Wales. Believes that the two posts should be split, and that Iorwerth C. Peate, who has quite exceptional qualifications, should be appointed Head of the Welsh Department. Hopes that Huw T. Edwards will be able to attend the next meeting at Bangor, and that he will make his voice heard. He would welcome a conversation with Huw T. Edwards. Welsh.

James Griffiths, MP, House of Commons. Thanks for writing on Aneurin [Bevan]'s matter. Thinks that unity between the unions and the constituencies is the basis of success within the Labour Party. This is a difficult task. Clem[ent Attlee] understands the difficulties better than anyone. The writer will do his best to lend support. The day of Attlee's resignation will spell danger. This is how he sees the future and the challenge for them all. 'Personal' Welsh.

D. Heathcoat Amory, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries & Food. Regrets that Huw T. Edwards wishes to resign from the Council of Management of the Welsh Land Settlement Society. Understands the decision, and accepts it with regret. Would like to thank Huw T. Edwards for his valuable services since his appointment as a member of the Council in 1949.

G[wilym] Lloyd-george, Home Secretary, Whitehall, London SW1. Has discussed the financial position of the Welsh Tourist Board with Sir Arthur Morse. He was unable to promise to increase the financial assistance given to the Board by the British Travel and Holidays Association. The financial commitments of the Btha were on the increase and it was being forced to economise. Expressed the hope that increased resources would be available at some point in the future. Regrets that the outcome of the discussion was so negative.

G[wilym] Lloyd-george as in A1/213. Has been following the press reports of the arrangements being made for the 1958 Festival of Wales. Feels certain that such an event would be of much benefit to Wales. The Conference held earlier in the year supported the proposal. But believes that it is not yet opportune to bring the matter to the attention of the Queen. More detailed arrangements are necessary. Will be glad to offer any personal assistance.

G[wilym] Lloyd George as in A1/213. Clarifies the position of the government over the Welsh Books for Adults Scheme. All the Government can do is to promise to consult with colleagues. Regrets that references to a specific sum of money have circulated in Wales. Hopes that he made it clear that there were real difficulties in the way of the Government accepting the proposals made to it. Regrets that he has to inform Huw T. Edwards that he cannot agree to the proposal. The scheme, of course, has many merits, but there is no evidence that it is totally sound administratively. Shall be glad to grant an interview to two or three members of the Welsh Books for Adults Committee, but is not at all optimistic that the decision of the Government can be reversed.

Aneurin [Bevan], House of Commons. Events have turned out as expected and as he hoped [at the 1955 Labour Party Conference]: 'It was always my desire to try and show up the Trade Union block for what it is, a wanton and unrepresentative use of mass power. I think we succeeded in doing that whatever else we may have failed to do'. Hopes that Huw T. Edwards's health is improved.
