David Harris: Extracts

Extracts made by David Harris, Cwmdauddwr, afterwards of Carno (1747-1834), from newspapers and periodicals, 1826-1828. They include short accounts of Edward Williams (Iolo Morganwg) and David Richards (Dafydd Ionawr).

'Carwr y Cymru'

Prose and poetry copied in 1674-1679 by Edward Roberts, vicar of Capel Garmon, 1671-1685, whose translation, Llaw Llyfr yw ddarllen ir Cleifion, appeared in 1754. The contents include a transcript of Carwr y Cymru yn annog ei genedl anwyl ... i chwilio yr Scrythyrau ... (London, 1631) and other religious treatises, prayers, etc., a catechism, 'Achau'r Cwrw', and poems by the transcriber and others, including Rowland Vaughan and Wiliam Phylip. The hymn beginning 'O Arglwydd arnat i mae mhwys' was printed in Examen Quotidanium Ymholiad Beunyddiol (London, 1658).

The Celynog Manuscripts are a collection of miscellaneous 17th to 19th century correspondence and papers, consisting of examples of Welsh literature, Welsh poetry, musical compositions, works on Welsh grammar, medical recipes, extracts from various newspapers and periodicals, tithe accounts, and genealogical, geographical, historical and political manuscripts. -- The collection also contains manuscripts relating to religion in Wales, with examples of Welsh religious literature, Welsh sermons and hymns, and manuscripts relating to the Welsh Congregational churches, and translations of charters granted to the abbey of Strata Florida.
