Personalia and miscellanea

The file consists of miscellaneous items accumulated by Dr Roderic Bowen during the course of his career. They include copies of his election address circulated to the Cardiganshire electorate in 1945 and 1951, photocopies of papers relating to Dr Bowen's appointment in 1946 to act as Judge Advocate at a military court for the trial of war criminals, a 1950 general election poster and a full transcript of an interview, 8 August 2000, between Dr Bowen and Matt Cole of Birmingham University. In this interview Dr Bowen reflects in some detail on his life and the major landmarks in his professional career.

The series comprises diaries detailing farming activities on the farms of Penyffridd, 1883-1891, Felindre, 1892-1914, Cil, 1926, all in Berriew, Wales, and Lower House farm, Little Ness, England, 1933. 1/1-5, 1/8 also include notes on the sermons of Rev. E Thomas at Byrwyrdd chapel, Castle Caereinion, Wales.

Bangor Bishopric foreshore rights,

Letter (17 pp.), 1885, from W. J. Hardy, Chancery Lane, London, outlining the result of searches carried out among records at the Public Record Office (now The National Archives), Lambeth Palace, and the British Museum, concerning the Bishop of Bangor's foreshore rights, including wreck of the sea, within all his manors and lands. Also included are extracts from, and abstracts of, documents, 1284-1715, from the three repositories; together with an abstract of a report entitled 'Bangor Bishoprick Estates. Foreshores and Waste Lands', prepared by H. W. Hewlett in 1866.

The Arts in Wales,

Mainly manuscript and typescript notes, 1970-1987, prepared by Sir Goronwy Daniel for addresses and speeches on themes relating to the arts in Wales, together with a small quantity of related printed items and press cuttings. The file also contains notes for an address on 'Yr Ieuanc a Disgyblaeth Heddiw' delivered by Sir Goronwy at Cyfundeb Annibynwyr Penfro, 16 July 1980.

Cuttings on the Aberfan disaster,

The file comprises various newspaper and magazine cuttings, [Oct.] 1966-Dec. 1967, some in photocopied form, concerning the disaster at Aberfan on 21 October 1966, including cuttings regarding the subsequent public inquiry at Merthyr Tydfil, as reported in both the national and local press, as well as articles from the Colliery Guardian. Also included are some pages from a glossy magazine showing pictures of the scene immediately following the tragedy.

Series contains papers related to Welsh affairs, including devolution of the legal system, campaigns for devolution, higher and further education and parliamentary work on Welsh issues.

Art patronage,

Correspondence with Welsh artists, art patrons and administrators of art institutions, together with annotated catalogues, ephemera and press cuttings, almost all relating to Winifred Coombe Tennant's activities as a patron of Welsh art and art in Wales. Throughout this group of papers are notes added by Alexander Coombe-Tennant.

Welsh voices

The file comprises papers, 1966-1967, relating to Welsh voices. An anthology of new poetry from Wales, ed. Bryn Griffiths (London, 1967), mostly correspondence between Glyn Jones and Bryn Griffiths which includes lists of poems for the anthology (one letter also contains observations regarding the Aberfan disaster). Glyn Jones appears to have acted as consultant on behalf of the Welsh Arts Council during the compilation of the anthology.
