Panton papers

Manuscripts and papers, [1600x1606]-1822, from the collections of Paul Panton at Plas Gwyn, Anglesey. They comprise correspondence of both the elder and younger Paul Panton, containing antiquarian, political and legal material, including matters relating to both Pantons' Flintshire interests in lead mines, colliery undertakings, navigation of the River Dee, railways, smelting works, etc., and matters relating to public responsibilities such as building works, schools and coastal security, mainly in Anglesey; papers relating to the Panton family and their estate and to Plas Gwyn estate; further material relating mainly to Anglesey and Flintshire, such as pedigrees, histories, charters and documents regarding land tenure and other legal matters, some of which is in the hand of William Williams, antiquary, of Beaumaris; manuscripts of or relating to antiquarian and literary figures such as Robert Vaughan, Hengwrt, Evan Evans (Ieuan Fardd), Thomas Pennant and Richard Fenton; other legal papers, including Anglesey crown pleas, a volume of legal precedents and a dictionary of law terms; etc.

Evan Evans (Ieuan Fardd) manuscripts

Manuscripts, mostly in the hand of Evan Evans (Ieuan Fardd), containing mainly transcripts of material of Welsh antiquarian, historical and literary interest, from sources which include royal genealogies, poetry, pedigrees, Brut y Tywysogion, Thomas Pennant, grammatical notes, etc.; also included are fifteenth-century tracts, seventeenth-century treatises, correspondence of Evan Evans, legal notebooks of Paul Panton, senior, and Paul Panton, junior, correspondence of Thomas Falconer (d. 1792), etc.

An itinerary in South Wales

An itinerary written by Richard Fenton for Paul Panton [junior] on a visit to South Wales, 1812. The manuscript, which is incomplete, covers the area from Machynlleth through Aberystwyth to the Teifi valley, with an excursion to Pumpsaint, and over into Pembrokeshire from Cardigan (pp. 1-12); a route through the Vale of Towy (pp. 19-20); and an area around Cowbridge (pp. 23-24).

A copy of an oration ('autore Domino Wayvil') ostensibly delivered at Cambridge, 1706 (pp. 1-20), an 'Epitaphium Ecclesiae Authore ignoto', 1706 (p. 21), and a poem 'on the burning of Ye Memorial' by John Prince (p. 22), all in the same hand; extracts 'out of ye Memorial' against leniency towards Dissenters on the accession of Queen Anne, [?1705] (pp. 23-28); and extracts, 1778, from Thomas Gurney's Brachygraphy; or, Short Writing (16 ff.).

A composite volume containing (a) a record of manuscripts and books lent by John Jones (dean of Bangor), 1683-1724 (ff. [1]-[25]), together with (b) 'Rules for ye study of Theology by Dr [Thomas] Barlow of Oxford', [c. 1650] (pp. 1-54) and, in the same hand, lists of books compiled for 'a Friend who desired ye Names of some Bookes, wich might bee fit to furnish a library for young (yet Academicall studies)', [c. 1650] (pp. 57-92).

Legal precedents

Two books of legal precedents, one containing examples from England, mainly London, and the other containing copies of documents relating to actions in the counties of Anglesey, Caernarvonshire, Merioneth, and Shropshire.

A dictionary of navigation

'A breife abstract, exposicon, and true demonstration of all parts and thinges belonginge to a Ship and the practique of Navigation' by H.M. (pp. 15-174), with a list of contents (pp. 3-10) and preface (pp. 11-14).
Also in the volume (pp. 1-2) is a leaf in the hand of Evan Evans (ieuan Fardd) from a history of Sir Rhys ap Thomas, which appears to belong between pp. 156 and 157 of NLW MS 2038D.

Rhann o Psalmae Dafydd Brophwyd

A volume in the hand of Evan Evans (Ieuan Fardd) containing a transcript of Edward Kyffin, Rhann o Psalmae Dafydd Brophwyd iw Canu ar ol y Dôn Arferedig yn Eglwys Loegr (London, 1603, ESTC S90847) (pp. 1-48); an incomplete transcript of T. Crane's paraphrase of the 45th psalm, 1774 (pp. 49-57); and transcripts of the charters of the Lord Rhys and King Henry II to the abbey of Strata Florida (pp. 58-68).
This volume is the original Panton MS 46, recorded as 'missing' in Historical Manuscripts Commission, Report on Manuscripts in the Welsh Language, ed. by J. Gwenogvryn Evans, 2 vols (London: HMSO, 1898-1910), II (1905), 856.

Notes on British history

Rough notes by Robert Vaughan, Hengwrt, on early British history; a list of Cumbrian Kings; British and Saxon chronology; the rivers of Britain; a list of Gwentian kings; notes on Welsh saints and kings; genealogies; a writ issued by Robert Vaughan, 7 May 1658, for the binding over of Richard Griffith ap Rees and Owen Morris of Llanddwywe, yeomen, to keep the peace towards Margret Evan of Llanddwywe. Many of the notes are written on mutilated letters addressed to Robert Vaughan. On the original covers, bound in at the end of the volume, is the incomplete text of a grant of an annuity issuing out of Y Towr Maen in Trawsvynyth from Richard Nanney of Llanylltyd to Cadwaladr ap Humfrey (ff. 95-96).

Thelwall-Wynne agreement

A copy of articles of agreement concluded at Berain, 5 January 1581/2, between Thomas Salesbury of Lleweny and John Wynn of Gwedyr, esquires, and Symon Thelwall, esquire, and Edward Thelwall, his son and heir apparent, touching a double marriage arranged between Edward Thelwall and Katherine Wynne, widow, and between Symon Thelwall, junior, and Jane Wynne, daughter of Maurice Wynne, deceased.

North Wales rentals

A collection of North Wales rentals including particulars of the lands of Hugh Gwyn Bodvill in Caernarvonshire examined by William Wynne and John Pigott (pp. 1-4); an annotated rental of crown lands in Anglesey, 1632 (pp. 9-20, 5-8); and extents of the vill of Berayn (2 unnumbered ff.) and of the lordship of Ruthyn and Dyffryn Clwyd (pp. 21-84). All the items, with the exception of the first, are in the hand of Robert Lloyd, surveyor of crown lands in North Wales.

North Wales rentals

A composite volume containing rentals and miscellaneous papers relating to crown rents in North Wales, comprising: a list of tenants and tenements and their chief rents in Llanfrothen, lands in Isgwyrfai, and rents in various charges, 1638 (pp. 1-42); a terrier of the King's land in Penmaen and Llysfaen viewed and written by William Lloyde of Nanlley, 1605, and the names of the jury that found the lands in Llysfaen, 4 January 17 Eliz.
