Sermons and notes

A notebook, 1835-1846, of William Roberts ('Nefydd') containing one sermon in English (ff. 1-10), sermon notes in Welsh (ff. 15v-19), and miscellaneous accounts and memoranda. The inside front cover is inscribed 'William Roberts's Book, January 20th 1835'.

'Beirdd a Llenorion Gwent a Morganwg'

Volume four of an essay in five volumes 'Ychydig o Hanes rhai o Feirdd a Llenorion Gwent a Morganwg. Un o Destunau Cymdeithas Cymreigyddion Blaenau Gwent, Medi 1854' by 'Y Llercyn Llwyd' [T. E. Watkins, 'Eiddil Ifor'].

Ironworks carriage book

A report book, 1854, containing a daily record of the transportation by rail of goods and merchandise between Newport and iron-works, possibly Nant-y-glo.

Mine accounts

An account book, 1866-1871, of No. 2 Black Pins Pit colliery, Nant-y-glo, containing a monthly record of work carried out, by hauliers, daymen, etc. and wages paid including particulars of deductions and cash advances. 'No. 2 Black Pins Pit. Henry Whittington' is inscribed inside the front cover.

Miscellaneous items including diary entries, January-February 1855, by William Roberts ('Nefydd'), mainly relating to his duties as South Wales agent for the British and Foreign School Society (ff. 1-5v); an essay in Welsh 'Traethawd ar y Lles y mae Dadguddiad Dwyfol wedi ei wneud i ddyn fel bod cymdeithasol' by 'Eiddil Clydach' (?Edmund Morgan), apparently written for the Brynyfryd eisteddfod, Ebbw Vale, 1854 (cf. NLW MS 7133C) (ff. 7-11v); and a list, late 18 cent., of members of the Cymmrodorion Society in London (f. 12r-v).

Letters from Joseph Bradney et al,

Ten letters, 1923-1926, from Joseph Alfred Bradney, Tal-y-coed, Monmouthshire, to E. I. Williams, Pontypridd (ff. 1-21); two letters, 1938-1952, from E. I. Williams to E. Silk, headmaster of Nant-y-glo Secondary School, the former listing Charity Schools, 1737-1847, in the parish of Aberystruth (ff. 23-6; and two letters, 1941-1942, concerning the loan of documents of Monmouthshire interest including some of the above (ff. 27-8).

'Llyfr Coch Asaph'

A miscellaneous collection of records mainly relating to Wales compiled towards the middle of the seventeenth century. -- The manuscript begins on page 53 with extracts from 'Llyfr Coch Asaph', with the additions from the hand of William Bullocke, as in Peniarth MS 231 - a manuscript written by Robert Vaughan, Hengwrt, and most probably the immediate source of the Nefydd version; the 'summa' of 'Llyfr Coch Asaph' compiled in 1602, which is also contained in Peniarth MS 231, as well as the list of contents of another St. Asaph record - the 'liber pergamenus' which is now deposited with the Church in Wales records at the National Library; a transcript of a record of proceedings on a writ of quare impedit brought by the Prince of Wales against Howel Gymen and a hundred and seventeen others, touching the advowson of a prebend in the collegiate church of Holyhead ('prebenda de Castro Keby') supplied by 'Mr. Ellice the Councellor'; a collection of historical records relating to Wales taken directly from the hand of Robert Vaughan in Peniarth MS 236; a transcript of the 'Historia Britonum' of Nennius, copied out of a book given to John Selden by William Camden, compared with a version in 'Oxford Library' under the name of 'Gilda Minor', and ending with an extract from a Cottonian manuscript (pp. 245-88); a copy of the statutes of Chester Cathedral, temp. Henry VIII (pp. 289-310); 'Ymrafaelion henwau Ynys Brydain', etc. - seventeen chapters of pseudo-history and description of the Isle of Britain (cf. slightly different versions in Peniarth MSS 163 and 215), with a supplement containing accounts of place-names not included in the main text, a reference to the earthquake of 1574/5, the wonders of Scotland and Ireland, the conversion of the various British nations to Christianity, and 'y naw helwriaeth', 'mesurau cerdd dant', and 'trioedd mab y krinwas' (pp. 312-49). -- At the end of the volume are a number of documents relating to Cheshire and Flintshire - a note of entail of Flintshire lordships, Flintshire rents of assize, the customs of Dee mills and other records taken from a book of Edward Whitby, recorder of Chester, and a transcript of Robert Vaughan's copy of the fealty roll of the Prince of Wales, 29 Edward I .

Bullocke, William

'Llyfr Kowyddav y Masdr Huws or Deirnion',

A fragment of a volume described as 'Llyfr Kowyddav y Masdr [Hwmffre] Huws or deirnion siryf veirionydd ...', containing autograph 'cywyddau', some of them eulogising him, by Thomas Penllyn, Rhisiart Phylip, Tuder Owen, Sion Cain, and Huw Machno (some of them being dated 1619), together with other 'cywyddau' by Sion Cent, etc.

The Manor of Glyndyfrdwy

A portion, covering the years 1643-1665, of a volume containing records of the Court Leet and Court Baron of the manor of Glyndoverdwy. A feature of the records is the description of the earmarks of stray sheep.

Llyfr Richart Roberts,

A miscellany containing a metrical dissertation on Psalm 8, verses 3 and 4, followed by a poem dealing with the seven planets; 'Darlleniad diwiol'; 'Carol i Fair', beginning 'Yngwledydd Judea yr oedd Zackaria'; a part of a carol by Mathe[w] Owen; a 'cywydd', a 'dyri', and a carol by Huw Morus; a 'dyri' by Edwart Rolant ('o'r bala'); 'Erapater dros byth a gaed o lyfr Thomas Jones ... 1701'; farm notes for 1702; etc. -- Much of the volume is in the hand of Richard Roberts, whose name, with the date 'Mai 21, 1699', appears on one folio. At the end of the manuscript is the note: - 'Llyfr y coch o Hergist yn y glasgoed y mae ef'.

A fragment of four pages, numbered 171-4, containing poems by Thomas Edward, 1724, 'Tri phenill' by Catherine Rober[t]s, 'Carol y Gwilie' by 'Mr Edd. Wynne ficar ... Gwyddelwern', 1725, and 'Galarnad am y parchedig Evan Jones o Ben[craig]...' by Ellis Cadwalader.

A copy of the ballad 'Ymddiddan rhwng hen wr dall a'r Angau', followed by a religious poem beginning 'O pwy fel fi syn yn y byd yn amme ac yn credu o hyd ...'. The volume belonged to Edmund Lewis in 1763.
