These letters deal almost exclusively with points of procedure, financial matters, etc., in connection with law suits in which the recipient appears to have been engaged in a professional capacity. The majority of the letters seem to refer to the suit between [Sir Richard] Grosvenor [7th bart., created baron Grosvenor of Eaton, co. Chester, in 1761, and viscount Belgrave, co. Chester, and earl Grosvenor in 1784, plaintiff] and [Anthony Langley] Swymmer [and others, defendants, concerning lead mines on Mold mountain involving the defining of the boundary between the lordship of Mold and the lordship of Bromfield and Yale], and [the continuation of the suit, after the death of Mr. Swymmer, between Lord] Grosvenor [as plaintiff] and [Sir Francis] Vincent [7th bart., and Dame Arabella Vincent, his wife, widow of Anthony Swymmer, and others, defendants.

Miscellaneous poems in various hands including poems entitled 'A Christmas Chace 1777' (mention of Porkington and Llanarmon), 'The Cheshire Grand Jury's Address to Sir J[?oseph] J[?eky]ll' [chief justice of Chester, 1697- 1717] (referring to the prosecution of [Henry] Sacheverel[l] in which Jekyll had taken part), 'On the total Eclipse of the Moon, July 3oth 1776', and 'A Mere Sketch for the Amusement of you and yours' (addressed on the dorse to John Lloyd, Esqr., Wickwer near St. Asaph), a Latin epitaph to Jonathan Edwards [principal of Jesus College, Oxford, 1686-1712], and a poem written by Richard Howard [later rector of Denbigh, 1818-1843, and of Llandegfan with Beaumaris, 1826-1843, etc.] at Mold, 10 April 1802 (addressed on the dorse to Miss [ ] Lloyd, Mold).

A copy of Riders 1670 Brittish Merlin containing manuscript memoranda including a list of books bought in London, 26 March 1670, a notice of an attachment served 17 June 1670 on one of the servants of Sir Richard Wynne [?4th bart. of Gwydir], and a copy of the Latin inscription on the tomb of John Williams [lord keeper of the great seal and archbishop of York, in the church of Llandygai, co. Caernarvon].

The honour of Pickering, co. York,

Correspondence and miscellaneous documents relating to the honour of Pickering, being parcel of the duchy of Lancaster in the county of York. The miscellaneous items include a report, 21 April 1696, by S[ ] Travers, supervisor gen[eral], on the value of the honour of Pickering, the manors of Pickering and Scaulby, the site of the old ruined castle, Blansby Park, and other demesne lands belonging to the said honour and manors (copy); a royal warrant, 23 April 1697, authorising the grant of a lease of the honour and manors of Pickering, the manor of Scalby, etc., to Abell Tassin D'Allonne (copy); 'A Coppy of the particulars of ye L[or]ds[hi]p of Pickering, Scalby & Blunsby Park . . .' [18th cent.]; particulars relating to a lease of the castle and manor of Pickering, the park of Blandesby, the manor or lordship of Scalby, etc., granted by the king, under the seal of the duchy of Lancaster, 18 May 1697, to Abel Tassin D'Allonne; questions in a case relating to the aforementioned lease; and an affidavit sworn by William Stockdale at Scarborough, 27 April 1710, concerning the refusal of George Watson of Old Malton, co. A letter book of Rob[er]t Howard [collector of customs at Conway, co. Caernarvon], and post master there 1759-1760, containing holograph copies and abstracts of letters written at Conway during the period 1755- 1765. The outside upper cover is inscribed 'Letter Book since Feb[ruar]y 1752', but the first few pages of the volume have been torn out and the first entry is dated Jan[uar]y 1755. A copy of the sale catalogue of the library and scientific apparatus of John Lloyd of Wigfair ['The Philosopher'], entitled Bibliotheca Llwydiana. A Catalogue of the entire library (near ten thousand volumes) from the presses of Caxton, Wynhyn de Worde, Pynson, etc., and philosophical apparatus, late the property of John Lloyd, esq., LL.D., deceased . . . which will be sold by auction, without reserve, at his seat at Wygfair near St. Asaph, Denbighshire, on Monday, January 15th, 1816, and twelve following days . . . by Mr. Broster of Chester . . ., being an interleaved copy with manuscript entries recording the amount for which each item was sold.

A draft holograph manuscript of [the Reverend Robert Potter's tract entitled An Inquiry into some passages in Dr. Johnson's Lives of the Poets particularly his observations on lyric poetry and the odes of Gray; [with] the ninth Pythian ode of Pindar translated, London, 1783], written to express the author's disagreement with some of the critical statements made by Dr. [Samuel] Johnson, particularly with regard to lyric poetry, in his biographical and critical work on English poets, The Lives of the most eminent English poets with critical observations on their works [London, 1781].

Programme of Mold horse races, etc.,

A programme announcing horse races to be run at Mold on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, 22, 23, and 24 September 1800, a public breakfast to be given by the corporation of Mold at the Black Boy Tavern on Thursday, 26 [September] [there is a discrepancy here between the date and the day], a grand miscellaneous concert to be held immediately after the breakfast, and 'The Annual Election of the Mayor, Sheriffs, etc.' to be held on the evening of the same day. The programme had been forwarded to 'Miss Clough at Holland Griffiths, Esqr., Carregllwyd, Anglesea'.

Letter,

A document described as 'A true Coppy of a letter found under a Stone written w[i]th Gods own hand . . . found at Meccebe near the town of Sundeme In ye year of our Lord 1603', and purporting to contain the 'ten comandm[en]ts of Jesus Christ sent by the Angel Gabriell in ye year afores[ai]d 1603'. The present copy is stated to be a 'copia vera originalis ex manuscripto Thomae Parry 1714'.

An account of a visit to London,

An account, in diary form [? by John Lloyd of Hafodunos], of a journey via Oswestry, Salop, Wolverhampton, and Birmingham to London, 4-10 April 1811, and of the writer's social and other activities in that city, 10 April-3 May. There are references to, inter alia, meals taken with Sir Joseph Banks and his family in Soho Square, the company at Sir Joseph's house, dinners at the Royal Society Club with names of members present, an introduction to Mr. [John] Pond, the recently appointed astronomer royal, conversations with bishop [Samuel] Goodenough of Carlisle concerning [ William] Aitoun's work Hortus Kewiensis, with Mr. [?Jesse] Foote concerning medical matters, and with Mr. [Thomas Andrew] Knight on horticultural topics, an account by Sir [William] Sidney Smith of some French officers he had known and of engagements at Acre and Mount Carmel, attendances at lectures [on electricity] given by Mr. [George John] Singer, comments by l'Abbe de Vey on [Hyman] Hurwitz's work on Hebrew grammar, information from Governor [William] Bligh ['Bligh of the Bounty', who had been Governor of New South Wales, 1805-?1808] about the impending court martial concerning the 'Port Jackson Business', and the proof sheets of Mr . [John] Farey's report on Derbyshire.

A note book containing a narrative account of misunderstandings which had arisen between Mr. [ ] Lloyd on the one side, and Mrs. [ ] Tillard and Mrs. [ ] West on the other, during the period 1748-1750, dealing more specifically with 'Mr. Ll[oyd]'s reasons for not waiting upon Mr. T[illard]' s family when they came into the Country for the summer 1749'.

A notebook containing 'An account of Lead Oar weighed off within the Lordship of Mold since Christmas 1718 at 20d per Tun Farme', giving the amounts of farm paid to the agents of the three lords of Mold respectively during the period 1718-1738.

Accounts re estates in the manor of Mold,

Accounts rendered by Thomas Williams of Bronkoed, co. Flint, gent., in respect of the estates of Mr. [? John] Langley within the manor of Mold, co. Flint, for the years 1694-1695. The accounts were submitted to Mr. John Williams of the Old Bayly, London, one of the trustees for the said estate, and were allowed and approved of by him on behalf of Mr. Samuel Langley, 5 June 1696.
