There are some notes previously pinned to this copy in a different hand (now ff. 5a, 12a, 18a, 34a). These notes may have been taken from Dr Humphrey Humphreys' copy, and the same scribe has occasionally restored the original reading of Mostyn MS 39 where it had been discarded in favour of interlineations in that copy.

Goronwy Owen, then a seventeen-year-old schoolboy, transcribed most of the earlier part of the volume, during the Christmas vacation of 1739, as shown by this note by Dr Wynne on p. 72: 'January ye 11th 1739-40. This copy contains the additional paragraphs which are to be found in Peniarth MS 384 (ff. 1-3 verso, 10-16 verso); (b) Portions of the chronicle of Robert of Torigni: 1. Prologus Roberti de Torineio, beginning 'De Chronographia temporum descriptione ...' (ff. 7-8), 2. Alfred, of Beverley

Annales Cambriae

A transcript, [?1693] (see f. 16), of the Annales Cambriae (ff. 1-15 verso). This version appears to agree in the main (apart from scribal errors) with text B of Ab Ithell's edition in the Rolls Series [see Annales Cambriae (A.D. 444-1288). ed. by J. Williams ab Ithel, M.A. (London, 1860)]. It begins (see p. 8 of Rolls edition): 'Annus v. pluvia sanguinea cecidit in Britannia' ... and ends 'Annus M.CC.LXXXVI. Combustio domorum apud Stratam Floridam'.
The old covers (ff. 16-17) comprise part of a deed between Sir Thomas Mostyn and John Ball.

Life of Gildas; Annales Cambriae; &c,

  1. Vita sanctissimi atque doctissimi viri Gildae incipit ... A copy of the Life of Gildas, which is attributed to Caradog of Llancarvan (ff. 1-5 verso); 2. Incipiunt Chronica Venerabilis Bedae ... A copy of a version of the Annales Cambriae, which seems to correspond with MS C of Ab Ithell's edition in the Rolls Series [see Annales Cambriae (A.D. 444-1288). ed. by J. Williams ab Ithel, M.A. (London, 1860)]. There are only a few extracts from the beginning of the MS, until references to Britain become frequent (ff. 8-23); 3. Annales Cambriae ignoti Authoris. This seems to agree with MS B of the Rolls edition, while omitting the introductory material; the first entry is: 'Anno mortalitas magna fuit in Britannia, pro qua Cadwallader filius Catwallauni in minorem Britanniam aufugit' (see Rolls edition, p. 8). The editor on p. 109 states that in MS B opposite the last entry are the words 'non iven pe'; these are here extended to 'Non inveni plus' (ff. 25-37 verso).
Also included are a single leaf containing entries for several years between 1116 and 1287 (f. 24 recto-verso); a leaf containing entries for several years between 1147 and 1298, the source being indicated by a note: 'Huc usque ex Libro vocato Doomesday reservato penes Rememoratorum Dominae Reginae in Scaccario Westmonasteri' (f. 38 recto-verso), and a page containing entries from the reign of Edelric son of Edgar to that of William Rufus (f. 39). The old vellum covers are part of a document in Latin whose contents are currently obscured following conservation (ff. 40-41).

Cywyddau ac awdlau

A volume of Welsh poetry mostly in the hand of Humphrey Davies (Wmffre Dafis), [vicar of Darowen], contining copies of cywyddau and awdlau by well-known and less known poets from the early fourteenth century to the early seventeenth century (pp. 25-492). Some poets are well represented, especially Ieuan Tew, Sion Keri and Huw Arwystl.
Twelve folios at the beginning (pp. 1-24), as well as six (formerly loose) folios at the end (pp. 493-504) are in the hand of Evan Lloyd of Blayn glyn, a former owner of the volume. These include a copy of a version of the dialogue between Hadrian and Epictetus, beginning: 'llyma ymddiddanion Rhwng adram [sic] emerodr Rhufein ag Epig y ddav wr calla yn y bvd', which differs greatly from the text found in Llyfr Yr Angkr and the Hengwrt MSS (pp. 3-7). Two other leaves (now bound in at the end of the volume), one bearing a Welsh poem in free metre (pp. 505-506) and the other an assessment of Derwen parish, [Denbighshire] (pp. 507-508), do not seem to belong to this volume.

Davies, Humphrey, -1635

Life of St David

A copy of the Latin Life of St David by Rhygyfarch, with the following heading: 'Incipit vita scti. Dewi vel David Authore Ricemarcho Britanno pervetusto. Dr Barlows hand' (pp. 1-26). This version has been compared with that of Capgrave and the variants have been entered on the margins.
