David Davies: General and Political Correspondence,

Comprises letters to David Davies, from 1932 the first Baron Davies of Llandinam, 1901-44, mainly on domestic political matters and international issues. Some of the early letters are from David Davies while he travelled extensively abroad, 1901-05. From 1932 onwards some concern the affairs and the running of the New Commonwealth Society set up by Davies himself in that year, mainly the proceedings of its British Section. Some letters also relate to Davies's researches and many publications in the form of monographs and journal articles. There are also references to the role and activities of the League of Nations Union and to the publication of the periodical the Welsh Outlook. There are also significant files of copies of letters sent out by Davies's various secretaries on a wide range of subjects. The group also comprises correspondence and papers, 1916-43, relating mainly to the Montgomeryshire County Liberal Association and political life within the county, including the circumstances leading to David Davies resolving to retire from parliament in 1926-1927. There are also some interesting memoranda, 1918-44, deriving from the Liberal Party nationally during a crucial period in its history. There is also correspondence and papers, 1945-50, concerning E. H. Garner-Evans MP.

General correspondence, 1901-29, to David Davies, together with copies of his replies in some cases. They cover a wide range of subjects and issues, mostly political. The important letters penned by prominent politicians and public figures have been noted at file level. Many of the letters from the period 1901-05 were written by David Davies to his relatives and associates while he travelled extensively abroad. Some of the letters from 1917-18 discuss demobilisation or reconstruction in the wake of the First World War.

The correspondents include Sir John Ballinger, E. Penllyn Jones, and A. C. Humphreys-Owen, Glansevern. Some of the correspondents comment on the recent publication of the Llandinam Magazine published in 1901. The file also contains a large number of letters from David Davies to his mother and some other individuals while he was travelling, giving his impressions of the countries and describing in some detail his travels and experiences. These countries include the USA, Canada, Japan, Korea and China. Many are written on board various shipping vessels while travelling. The file also contains the following texts of lectures or articles 'Impressions of Norway', 'Lecture on Japan', 'Impressions of Corea [sic]' and 'The Irish Problem & its Solution'. There are also some letters addressed to David Davies while on his travels and give him advice on travelling and where to go.

Includes letters from T. Huws Davies and D. A. Thomas, Viscount Rhondda. Many of the letters from 1917 and 1918 discuss various aspects of the war effort. Some later letters refer to demobilisation and reconstruction, and there are a few references to the coal industry. There is also a group of letters, 1917-18, from George M. Ll. Davies to David Davies, together with a few letters from David Davies to George M. Ll. Davies. These letters discuss the war effort, George Davies's contributions to the Welsh Outlook, and conditions in prison. There are detailed comments on contemporary political life and world events.
