Dispute books,

This series comprises volumes tabulating information on disputes dealt with by the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association between 1890 and 1946. Volumes D1/1/1-26 note the names of the collieries; the owners of the collieries; the subject of each dispute; the duration of the strike; when each dispute was discussed at Conciliation Board Meetings, together with their recommendations. Volumes D1/1/27-32 tabulate information on specific classes of workmen, and specific subjects. Volumes D1/1/33-35 tabulate information on Stoppages without notice. D1/1/36-37 deal mainly with wage disputes.

Wage disputes,

Material relating to wage disputes dealt with by the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association. Material includes meeting notices; strike notices; summaries of claims for compensation owing to loss of output during stoppages; particulars relating to stoppages at specific collieries; and correspondence and papers relating to Conciliation Board negotiations, appointments, and joint recommendations and resolutions.

Typical disputes,

Material relating to typical employment disputes at member companies, in which these companies sought the advice of the Association before submission to the Joint Disputes Committee. Material comprises mainly correspondence, usually between the company or colliery involved and the Association, and often with the South Wales Miners' Federation. Companies concerned include the Powell Dyffryn Steam Coal Co., the Amalgamated Anthracite Collieries, Evans & Bevan Ltd., the United National Collieries, the Brynhenllis Colliery, the Tredegar Iron and Coal Co., and the Thomas Merthyr Colliery Co.

Pitwood Department,

Files created by the Pitwood Department relating to the supply and transportation of pitwood for use in Welsh collieries. Material comprises mainly correspondence, written between the Coal Owners Association and the Forestry Commission, the Cardiff and Bristol Channel Pitwood Importers Association, the Great Western Railway Co., the Ministry of Supply, and the Mining Association of Great Britain Timber Advisory.

Mechanical and Surface Workers' Conciliation Board,

Transcripts of Mechanical and Surface Workers' Conciliation Board meetings between representatives of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association and representatives of the South Wales and Monmouthshire Mechanical and Surface Workers' Union. Discussions mainly concerned the clarification of the different classes of workmen (for purposes of representation), the setting up of a joint committee, and a variety of disputes at numerous collieries.

Colliery Weighers' Conciliation Board,

Material related to the work of the Colliery Weighers' Conciliiation Board, comprising transcripts of meetings between representatives of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association and representatives of the South Wales and Monmouthshire Colliery Weighers Association. Discussions relate to disputes over wage rates at particular collieries.

Cardiff District Board,

Minute books, 1892-1947, of the Cardiff District Board of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association. Minutes for the period before 1892 are included in the Association's General Minute Books (A1/1-5). The minutes cover a range of activities, such as the Boards' considerations of claims for compensation made by members within the district; resolutions embodying its recommendations on these claims for the consideration of Association meetings; preliminary hearings on individual disputes; pursuing investigations of disputes and agreeing on settlements; consideration of reports from members; preliminary consideration of applications to join, or leave, the Association; annual revisions of Assurances of members; the election of officers and the implementation of Association policy within the district.

Newport District Board,

Minute books of the Newport District Board of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association. The minutes cover a range of activities carried out by the members of the Board, such as the Board's considerations of claims for compensation made by members within the district; the passing of resolutions embodying its recommendations on these claims for the consideration of Association meetings; conducting preliminary hearings on individual disputes and pursuing investigations of disputes (including stoppages at the mines); consideration of reports from members and external committees; preliminary consideration of applications to join, or leave, the Association; carrying out annual revisions of Assurances of members; the election of officers and the implementation of Association policy within the district.

Ad hoc committees,

Material related to the work of a number of Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association committees including the Joint Emergency Committee, Commercial Committee, Coal Cutters & Conveyers Committee, Coal Dust and General Research Committees, Anthracite & Steam Coal Collieries Committee, Eight Hours Committee, and the Education Committee, amongst others. Material comprises mainly minutes and reports.

Joint committees,

Material related to the work of many Coal Owners Association joint committees, including the following: Joint Sliding Scale Committee; Enginemen Wages Committee; Joint Standing Disputes Committee; Enginemen's Association; South Wales Coal Shipment Advisory Committee; South Wales Committee on Physical and Chemical Survey of the National Coal Resources; Joint Committee representing the Safety in Mines Research Board, Colliery Owners, Mining Engineers, Workmen, H.M. Inspector of Mines, Colliery Managers; South Wales Area Committee of the Coal Utilization Council; Disputes Finality Committee and the Joint Coal Production Committee. Material comprises mainly minutes of proceedings, résumés, notices and agenda.

Account journals,

Journals containing financial entries for many types of accounts including members' subscription accounts, capital accounts, indemnity and expenses accounts, revenue and investment accounts. Entries in the early journals are grouped according to district board, and some journals include account balance sheets in the back of the volume.

Account ledgers,

Ledgers containing financial entries and notes for various accounts including members' subscription and expenses accounts, capital fund accounts, indemnities accounts, investment accounts and revenue accounts. Expenses itemized include such things as travel, meetings, legal fees, engineers' fees, office maintenance and expenses, electricity in mines, back to coal movement, strikes and other disputes, committee and conciliation board expenses. Many ledgers contain an index of colliery companies in the front of the volume. Ledger contents are arranged by colliery and often include balance sheets for particular types of accounts in the back of the volume.

Cash books,

Volumes which record the monies paid into, and out of, the Association's accounts. Most of the volumes in this series contain entries for the Indemnities and Expenses Account, giving details such as the name of the colliery or railway company, the amount of money paid into the account, the amount paid out and to whom, and a description of the expenditure. Many cash books provide account summaries and in some instances signed balance sheets.
