Literary works

The series contains a variety of poetry and prose works composed at various times during Maurice James's lifetime.

Poetry and college essays

The file consists of an envelope containing material composed during Maurice James's college days. As well as several poems (including 'Forces' dated March 1938), there is a typed document in German entitled 'Wunder des Lebens' and an essay entitled 'The psychological interest in the poetry of Samuel Taylor Coleridge'.

Testimonials

The file contains testimonials from former school teachers and college lecturers and from acquaintances in Italy. There are also two newspaper cuttings relating to the Bellomo trial, 1945.

Scrapbooks

The series consists of notebooks used by Maurice James mainly as scrapbooks and diaries, 1937-[c. 1945]. The diary sections record, amongst other things, his reminiscences of Italy in 1937, his stay in Colwyn Bay while in the Royal Corps of Signals, 1941, and the sea voyage to Algiers in 1943. Numerous poems written by him are included as are copies of various letters sent by him. In addition, the volumes have numerous insertions. These include various letters, mainly relating to the period of his military service, as well as several military documents, 1940-1947. There are also some examples of poetry and prose inserted. A few items date from 1955 to 1956.

Postgraduate work

The series contains Maurice James's postgraduate work at the University of Wales Aberystwyth, including material relating to his Teacher's Diploma (1938-1939), his thesis, 1939-1940 and 1946-1948, as well as details of his extracurricular activities.

MA thesis

The file contains various drafts of, and notes for, Maurice James's unfinished MA thesis 'Ancients and Modern: The Development of Historical Criticism in the Eighteenth Century', 1939-1940, 1947-1948, together with a few letters relating to this work.

Military documents

The file contains various personal documents relating to Maurice James's military record, on matters including leave, promotion, tax and deferral of release, November 1941-April 1946.

Russian tests

The file contains six examination answer books (one unused) containing the answers for five Russian tests taken between December 1942 and May 1943.

Prose

The file contains two unfinished prose works: 'We'll meet in the Oatfield', intended for The Dragon/Y Ddraig magazine [c. 1940], and various drafts of the short story 'Rope', as in 5/1.

The series consists of letters written by and to Maurice James, numerous testimonials from teachers and lecturers and various postcards and newspaper cuttings, 1938-1962. The correspondence is mainly with his family, college friends and army friends during the War, and with friends in Huddersfield.
