  • NLW MS 6736B.
  • File
  • [c. 1842].

A copy, made about 1842, of a journal, in verse, of a tour or sojourn in South Wales, with a close association with Cilybebyll, together with a collection of poems, including translations from German, by the same anonymous author. The sub-sections of the journal have the following topographical titles: 'Graig Alltwen and the Mumbles', 'Cwm Clic', 'Llanguicke', 'Llyn-y-Fan', 'Coed-y-Brain and Carrig Marie', 'Gelli-Onnen', 'Carrig-Dinas and Cil-Hepste', and 'Plas Cil-y-bebyll'. At the beginning of the volume is a letter in the same hand as the text, signed 'M.E.D.B.' and written from Sevenoaks, 31 August 1838, to James -----, referring to the 'journal' and giving an account of Knole Abbey.

Also included are translations from the German, most apparently unpublished, of poems by Rilke, [1948] (f. 2), Theodor Storm, 1962, 1966 (ff. 3-4), Friederich Hölderlin, [1960x1967] (ff. 5-9), and Eduard Mörike, [1960x1967] (f. 12), and a translation from the French of the first seven verses of François Villon's 'Le Petit Testament', [1960x1967] (ff. 10-11); drafts of parts of 'The Island' (ff. 64-75) and 'The Eclipse' (ff. 76-78), two proposed plays by Watkins, [1940x1967]; a verse 'Epilogue for a play', [1940x1967] (ff. 79-80); and 'A Book from Venice', 1948, a poem by Watkins (published in Botteghe Oscure, 2 (1948), 270-1) (f. 2 verso). The translation of Storm's 'Cats' (f. 3) was published in TLS, 9 March 1962, p. 162.

Vernon Watkins: Translation from Hölderlin

Holograph working draft, [?1944], by Vernon Watkins of 'Memories', an English translation of Friederich Hölderlin's poem 'Andeken' (see for instance Friederich Hölderlin, Poems and Fragments, trans. by Michael Hamburger, 4th bilingual edn (London, 2004), pp. 576, 578).
The translation was first published in Life and Letters To-day, 44 (January 1945), 24-25, and was collected in Vernon Watkins, Selected Verse Translations (London, 1977), pp. 65-67. Ten of the poem's fifty-nine lines contain emendations by the author; the revised form corresponds exactly with the published version.
