Commonplace book, 1876-1893, of the Rev. Dr William Hopkyn Rees, a missionary in the North China, LMS, mission field, containing Welsh and English verse; sermon and other notes; quotations and maxims; and personal memoranda.

Moore's Vox Stellarum; or ... Almanack ... for the year 1818 with manuscript entries by Thomas Evans (Tomos Glyn Cothi) of preaching and other ministerial engagements, January 1818-January 1819, maxims and other extracts from printed sources, household accounts, and other memoranda. Also included are epitaphs and other verse by Thomas Evans (ff. 30 verso, 47 verso).

A collection of papers, 1831-1949, relating to John Jones ('Talhaiarn'), accumulated by his great-niece Lilian M. Jones.
They include holograph poems and lyrics in English and Welsh, [1843]-1868, mostly composed, but some copied, by Talhaiarn (ff. 1-24). Also included are fifty-three letters, 1857-1868, from the poet to his niece, Elizabeth Anne Jones, with some holograph poems appended (ff. 25-124); seven letters, 1848-1869, from him to family members and his publisher W. J. Roberts ('Gwilym Cowlyd') (ff. 125-37); four letters, 1869-1870, to his brother Thomas Jones (ff. 147-54), including three from John Thomas ('Pencerdd Gwalia'); a letter, 1870, from John Thomas ('Pencerdd Gwalia') to Elizabeth Jones (ff. 155-6); and three letters, 1939-1940, to Lilian Jones (ff. 157-60). In addition, the file contains various papers relating to Talhaiarn and his family, including the signed title page of his second volume of works, 1862 (f. 161), lists of subscribers to his third volume of works (ff. 163-4), and to the Talhaiarn Annuity Fund, 1864 (ff. 166 verso-167); administrative papers, 1869-1871, relating to his estate (ff. 169-83); press cuttings, 1869-1949 (mainly 1869-1870) (ff. 184-99); and various papers, including a copy of Talhaiarn's 'Gorsedd Prayer' in an unknown hand (f. 205). Among the works by Talhaiarn are the holograph poems to his niece, Elizabeth Anne Jones (ff. 1, 2, 4-8, 23, 42-3), 'The Zephyr and the Rose' (f. 9), 'Diver' (ff. 10-13), 'Psalm' (f. 14-15, 67), and the printed lyrics of 'A part song on the coming of age of William Grenville Williams', Bodelwyddan, 1865 (f. 17). Also included is a cutting of a tribute by Talhaiarn to Sir Joseph Paxton (f. 17 verso).

The original manuscript of the chair poem ('Tu hwnt i'r Llen') submitted by Ben Davies, Panteg, to the National Eisteddfod held at Llandudno, 1896.

Ten letters, 1877-1884, in English and Welsh, to David Edwards, farmer, of Gilfach Glyd, Ynysybwl, Glamorgan, from Thomas Thomas (Twm Ddwywaith), farmer, of Cefn Pennar Ycha, Aberdare, dealing with personal matters and including englynion, tribannau and other poetry in Welsh, mostly by Thomas (ff. 3-20); together with one letter to Edwards from [Henry Austin Bruce], Lord Aberdare, 11 August 1877, thanking him for translating an englyn into English (f. 1).
Also included are verses in English in an unidentified hand (f. 21), and a covering letter, 4 May 1953, from the donor (f. ii recto-verso).

'A Collection of Welsh Pennillion, etc.', in the hand of Richard Williams, Denbigh, 10 November, 1814, containing 'penillion telyn', 'englynion', and extracts from 'cywyddau' by Siôn Brwynog, Wiliam Llŷn, Goronwy Owen, Lewis Morris ('Llywelyn Ddu o Fôn'), Robert Davies ('Bardd Nantglyn'), John Jones ('Jac Glanygors'), and John Cain Jones ('Siôn Ceiriog'). Among the titles are '3 Englyns written in Peblig Churchyard', 'Englynion i Gorph y gaingc', and 'Englyn in praise of West in the Denbigh Election 1820' (with a reply).

Two essays in Welsh (one incomplete) on the Taf valley in counties Carmarthen and Pembroke by the Reverend John Lloyd James ('Clwydwenfro', 1835-1919) (ff. 1-39); two letters, 1895, from Jonathan N. Davies ('Carnalaw'), Liverpool, to 'Clwydwenfro' discussing the latter's poetry (ff. 40-5v); and poetry by 'Carnalaw' and 'Clwydwenfro'.

Miscellanea, including incomplete adjudications by Owen Jones on essays on the antiquities of the vale of Conway ('Henafiaethau Dyffryn Conway'), the foundation of Maenan Abbey ('Sefydliad Mynachlog Maenan'), etc.; the Elementary Certificate of the Tonic Sol-fa College awarded to William Rowland Williams, 1889 (the signatures include that of David Jenkins, examiner); a typescript copy of a poem in Welsh on the secession of Edward Stephen ('Tanymarian') to the Tory Party in 1874, with an accompanying note by R. W. Wynn, 1820, composed in a field near Wrexham; transcripts by 'Erfyl', including the 'Substance of a Sermon preached at the Baptist Chapel in Oswestry, on Sunday, August 13th, 1815. By the Revd. J. Palmer of Shrewsb[ur]y', a translation (copied at Whittington, 1814) of a petition to Governor [Warren] Hastings by the wife of Almas-ali-can 'who was seized upon and put to death for political purposes in India', and extracts from printed sources relating to Bangor, Tegeingl, etc.; a draft in the hand of Richard Llwyd, 'Bard of Snowdon', relating to the slave trade; a short-title list of Welsh periodicals ('Rhwydd Restr o Gyhoeddiadau Cym[r]aeg a Chymreig Amseriadol') in the hand of Robert Davies, Llansannan; and holograph poetry by Robert Ellis ('Cynddelw'), John Jones ('Myllin'), Thomas Edwards ('Caerfallwch'), and John Owen, Liverpool (1835) (awarded the prize at the Holywell Eisteddfod, 1834), etc.

A volume, 1875-1879, belonging to Thomas Hughes, Holyhead, containing a log of the barque 'Oswingo' (commanded by Captain A. Waycott), recording a voyage from Manilla to New York, September-November 1876 (ff. 1-33), and from New York towards Glasgow, December 1876 (ff. 37 verso-44).

Four letters, mostly in English, May-October 1831, May 1834, from John Jones (Tegid), Oxford, to Henry Jones, Merthyr Tydfil, mainly concerning Tegid's dispute with William Bruce Knight on the proposed reform of Welsh orthography (see W. B. Knight, Remarks, Historical and Philological, on the Welsh Language (Cardiff, 1830) and John Jones, Reply to the Rev. W. B. Knight's 'Remarks' on Welsh Orthography (Cardiff, 1831)).
Tegid quotes excerpts from letters of support received from Aneurin Owen (f. 1 verso), the Rev. Walter Cecil Davies (f. 2), George Phillips, BA, (f. 2) and Walter Davies (Gwallter Mechain) (f. 5). Also included are holograph poems, in Welsh (ff. 5 verso-6, 7, 10), including 'Merch ieuanc mewn darvodedigaeth', 1833 (f. 7), which was published in the Cambrian Quarterly Magazine and Celtic Repertory, 5 (1833), 56.

Account book, 1846-1856, of Rowland Thomas ('Idris Ddu', 1789-1856) of Merthyr Tudful, co. Glamorgan, containing records of payments to members of the Solid Rock of Wales Society ('Cymdeithas Cadarn Graig y Cymry') meeting at the Harp, Penllwynderi, Merthyr, together with other miscellaneous accounts and memoranda, including an account of William Howel's journey with Abel Evans (d. 1866) and the Mormons from Merthyr to St Louis, Missouri, 1849 (ff. 79-81); additions, 1859-1868, in the hand of Rowland Thomas's son, William R. Thomas, include verses in Welsh (ff. 26v, 119v), and brief details of literary competitions at the National Eisteddfod, Rhuthun, 1868 (ff. 118v-19).

A copy, made about 1788 by Cadwalader Pugh, of the poetical works of Rhys Jones o'r Blaenau. Though it does not appear to have been made from the author's holograph collection (Mostyn MS. 163), it contains most of the items included therein.The latter portion of the book was used between 1836 and 1849 as a commonplace book and contains material taken from newspapers, including The Christian Advocate, The Weekly Dispatch, The Shropshire Conservative, The Sunday Times, and particularly The Carnarvon and Denbigh Herald. The longer poems include 'Ffarwel Caerludd' by R. D., 'Cerdd y Myglys' (anonymous), 'Hiraeth am Feirion' by Owen Thomas ('Twrog'), 'Carol Plygain' by O. Williams, 'Pennillion Serch' by John Jones ('Talhaiarn'), 'Can y Crys' by Edward Roberts ('Iorwerth Glan Aled'), and 'Meirion i mi' by William Roberts ('Gwilym Aran').
