A manuscript in the hand of Lewis Morris ('Llewelyn Ddu o Fôn; 1701-65) based on a volume entitled 'Mysteria Kabalae Bardicae' and on other sources quoted by the scribe. The remainder is in several hands of the late seventeenth or early eighteenth century. There are copious annotations by William Maurice and some additions and annotations by Cadwaladr Dafydd, Llanymowddwy (1747) and L[ewis] Morris ('Llewelyn Ddu o Fôn', 1701-65).

Crwth a thelyn,

A composite collection of Welsh poetry and prose entitled 'Crwth a Thelyn. Y Rhan Gyntaf, sef y Crwth. Yr hwn Grwth a Aing ynddaw Swrn o Orchestawl Waith y Cynfeirdd, ac Ychydig o Farddoniaeth yr oes hon'. The collection was compiled by Hugh Jones, Esqr., of Talyllyn, and was begun by him about 1730. The collection comprises: Tlysau yr hen oesoedd ([C]aer-Gybi, 1735); triads ('gweddus I Ddyn yw Dyscu ai Cofio'. A manuscript in the hand of David Richards ('Dewi Silin') containing transcripts from Edward Williams ['Iolo Morganwg']: Poems, Lyric and Pastoral, Vol. II (London, 1794), pp. 217-37, of 'An Account of, and Extracts from The Welsh-Bardic Triades', 'Trioedd Braint a Defod', with an English translation entitled 'Institutional Triades', and 'Trioedd Barddas' (incomplete). Beginning at the end are an account of the city of Jerusalem ('History of the Roman Empire', vol. 2, p. 388), dissertations on 'The Resurrection' and on the Principles of Toleration, and extracts from the Salopian Journal, 24 August, 30 November 1825.

Silvan Evans containing copious transcripts of prose and poetry texts and extracts from several manuscripts in the Llanover collection, e.g. 'Dafydd ab Gwilym', 'Dafydd Ddu o Hiraddug', 'Pennillion diarhebol Iolo Morganwg', 'Pennillion Serch Gwasgar Iolo Morganwg', 'Dyriau Gwasgar', 'Darnau Defnyddion Doethineb Teuluaidd', 'Gwersi Doethineb', 'Gwasgaredd Doethineb', 'Silurian Phrases' 'Cyngor i Feirdd a Dysgedigion Cymru', 'Ffermyddiaeth', 'Arferion Morganwg', 'Trioedd y Llafurwr', 'Tywyddolion', etc. The transcripts of manuscripts at Llanover were made during the period 1880-2 but some annotations by the scribe are dated to 1892. Medical prescriptions, etc.

A late eighteenth and early nineteenth century manuscript of Thomas Davies containing medical recipes and prescriptions, notes on the treatment of diseases and on the virtues of herbs, and a few miscellaneous notes and extracts. The contents have been taken for the most part from printed sources but a few isolated prescriptions are ascribed to Jno. Morgans, surgeon, of St Davids, 1808 (p. 346) and Mr [Thomas] Jones, Neuaddfawr [Lampeter, Cardiganshire] (pp. 349, 357). Among some extraneous matter in the volume are 'Trioedd Offeiriaid' in 'triban' metre by Edward Williams ('Iolo Morganwg') (pp. 351-4) and a transcript of a Carmarthen Bank note, 1802. There is an incomplete index at the end of the volume.

Homiliau, barddoniaeth, etc.

An imperfect and badly mutilated volume containing sermons, some of which are transcribed from Edward James: Pregethau a osodwyd allan trwy awdurdod i'w darllein vmhob Eglwys blwyf ... (Llundain, 1606); proverbial sayings, triads and short tabular texts, many probably extracted from Robert Lloyd: Llwybr hyffordd yn cyfarwyddo yr anghyfarwydd i'r Nefoedd (Llundain, 1630) e.g. 'Wyth o arwyddion ansomedig o Iechydwrieth', '... arwyddion o ddamnadigaeth [sic] .... naw arwydd ... o golledigaeth dyn', 'Achosion seguryd ...', 'Naw o fariav i gav allan or nefoedd a naw porth i fyned i vffern', 'Naw ystyrieth buddiol', 'Geiriau gwir Taliesn [sic]', 'Attebion y seithwyr doethion yw gilydd ... Trysorfa yr Awen ...,

A volume written almost entirely in the autograph of John Roberts ('Siôn Lleyn'; 1749-1817) containing poetry largely of his own composition, with some items by other poets. The volume is in two sections and there is a list of contents at the beginning covering pp. 1-145 in the first section. The wording on the title-page is 'Trysorfa yr Awen sef Casgliad o Ganiadau, Sion Lleyn, 1787,' but some of the items are of later date. The other poets represented are David Thomas ('Dafydd Ddu o'r Eryri'), Robert Prich[ar]d (Robert Prichiard Sion,'Robin'r Aber'), T[h]om[a]s Edward[s] Nant, D. Edward, Lewis Morys, John Hughes ('pandy bach pentre ucha yn Lleyn'), Richard Powel, Evan Owens, Glan-yllynnay (Llanystumdwy), MrEfan Efans ('Bardd hir') [Ieuan Brydydd Hir], Evan Rich[ar]d (Bryncroes), [David Jones] Dafydd Sion Pierce ('Dafydd Brydydd hir'), Dafydd ap Sion, Owen Griffith, Hugh Lloed [sic] Cynfal, Goronwy Owen(s) ('Goronwy Ddu o Fôn'), Edmund Prys and Griffith Philip. One or two items (p. 2 in the first section and pp. 142-5 at the end of the volume) appear to be in the autograph of John Thomas ('Siôn Wyn o Eifion'). One 'cywydd' in the volume (p. 118 in the first section) is headed 'Annerch Ieuan Bryncroes i Sion Lleyn wedi dyfod i ymweled a mi i Chappel Rhyd-y-Clafrdy pryd yr oeddwn yno yn cadw ysgol y fln 1791 y mis Medi' . The volume contains some notes in the autograph of John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'), press cuttings and also a copy (printed) of Marwnad, neu Goffadwriaeth y Brawd Robert Roberts, o Sir Gaernarfon : yr hwn a ymadawodd â'r Byd hwn Tachwedd 28, 1802. Yn llawn 40 mlwydd Oed : wedi bod yn pregethu'r Efengyl 15 mlynedd. 8 pp. (Caernarfon : Argraphwyd gan T. Roberts, n.d.) by S. Lleyn. An early eighteenth century miscellany, with later additions, containing recipes in English; a herbal in Welsh, with 'englynion' in praise of herbs by William Cynwall, Huw llun, Rhys Iorwerth fynglwyd, Gryffith ap Efan, Dr. Richard Dafis ('Esgob Dewi'), Sion ap Sion, Sion Tudur, Howel borthor ('o'r Trallwng yn mhowys'), Thomas Efans (1619), etc; 'Brenin yn yr hên amser a ddyfeisiodd i ddeuddeg oi wyr ddoydyd 12 gair gwir dan eu perigl'; 'gofyn a wnaeth y saith wyr doethion iw gilidd. Pa ryw ddaioni ore ar ddyn ...'; 'y pethau a berthyn ar wr'; Welsh proverbs; 'Dysg i adnabod y lleuad newydd', 'I gael y Pasc tros byth', 'I gael difieu cablyd', 'I gael y Pasc byth', 'I gael newid y lleuad', and 'I wybod oed y lleuad', 'Tair Sir ar ddeg o gymru au Trefydd au dinasoedd au Cymydau, au heglwysydd' ('Diwedd Ebrill 10. 1722'); 'Trioedd mab y Crinwas'; 'Triodd [sic] yr usuriwr'; the story of 'Adar Llwch Gwin'; 'y Pedair Camp ar hugain', etc. The leather cover is blind tooled 'Ex Dono Edvardi Humphrey Anno Domni 1661', but there is no evidence to show whether or not this inscription refers to the present volume.

Ffrwdfâl manuscript,

A notebook of William Davies (1805-59), Independent minister and schoolmaster of Froodvale (Ffrwdfâl), Cynwyl Gaeo, Carmarthenshire, etc. The volume is bound in brown paper and entitled on the upper cover: 'Liber Poeseos. Composed by Wm Davies at Carnsullom in Cornwall. Scriptum Feb 8th 1831'. With the exception of a series of five 'tribannau', without a title, all the poems are in English, and an indication of their general theme may be gathered from the following titles: 'Loss of friends', 'Creation', 'Providence', 'Goodness of God', 'The Benefit of the Gospel', 'Shortness of life', 'Sufferings of Christ', 'Death of Martyrs', 'The Bible', etc. Most of the poems are dated within the period 22 February 1831-21 August 1832 and the majority are likewise subscribed 'W. D.' or 'W. D. Fecit'. An entry on the inside upper cover reads as follows: '1831. I W. D. started from Loftycyff July 6th, was at Bristol July 9th, at Exeter July 13, at Coverack July 16th'.

(a) A notebook (8 pp., in Welsh) containing 'Trioedd y Lladron', twelve in number, 'o Lyfr Thomas Philip o Dreos', in the autograph of Iolo Morganwg, followed by 'Credo Wladwriaethol' written in another hand; (b) The Bardic Institutes in the autograph of Iolo Morganwg (in English): (i) '[The] Bardic Institution according to [the] Laws of Gruffydd ab Cynan'. A note at the end states that this is an abstract of the Institutes as given by Dr John David Rhys in his Welsh Grammar, 1593; (ii) 'The Bardic Institutes as Traditionally retained down to the Present Day, by the Glemorganshire Bards who assert, and believe that they are unalteredly the same with those of the Ancient British Bards and Druids'.
