Papers, 1919-1921, of John Griffith, Dolgellau, relating to Sir Henry Jones's scheme to extend adult education in Wales with the assistance of the churches.
The papers comprise a printed circular, 14 August 1919, from Percy E. Watkins relating to an address delivered by Henry Jones at a public meeting in Corwen (ff. 1-2); a proof copy of a printed letter, 15 August 1919, from Henry Jones to William George, [Cricieth] (ff. 3-6); a letter, 6 October 1919, from John Griffith to his son Wyn enclosing extracts of the correspondence between Griffith and Henry Jones (ff. 7-8); typescript copies of a letter, 23 March 1921, from [Dr] T[homas] J[ones] to John Griffith (f. 9) and of Griffith's reply (f. 10); and a press cutting, [?1921], from Yr Herald Cymraeg containing an article on Henry Jones (f. 11).

Photocopies of background notes in Welsh and English, lent by Rev. Emrys W. Evans to the Library in October 2009, to assist with cataloguing seven issues of a magazine entitled Cymro, produced by the Cymric Club in Stalag IVB, Muhlberg-on-Elbe, Germany, in 1943-1944, known as NLW MS 22424F. Also included are printouts of reminiscences by Gareth Prytherch, of Vancouver, Canada, a contributor to the above magazine, which were published online and information relating to Idwal Pugh who was also a prisoner of war at the same camp.

A holograph letter from Ric[hard] Cobden to [Joseph] Sturge, 1849 (the progress of the peace movement, a tribute to Henry Richard); correspondence, 1872-8, relating to the proposed publication by the Cobden Club of the letters of Richard Cobden, including holograph letters to Henry Richard from Thos. Thomasson; Mrs Catherine Anne Cobden; Thomas B. Potter; [Sir] Louis Mallet; Henry Ashworth; [Sir] Thomas Bazley; [Sir] Edward Baines; C[harles] Cobden; W. Cowper Temple; and others; and copies of correspondence between Mrs. Catherine Anne Cobden, Thos. Thomasson, Henry Richard, and others; and holograph letters to Henry Richard from John Morley, Viscount Morley of Blackburn, 1878 (the writer's proposed biography of Richard Cobden; A. J. Mundella, 1882; J[ohn] Thomas, Congregational minister, Liverpool, 1887 (Samuel Morley's contribution to Congregational and other causes in Wales, the writer's proposed biography of the Reverend Thomas Rees, Swansea); and others. Bound with the letters is an offprint of an article by the donor, the Reverend H. R. Evans, M.C., M.A., on 'Henry Richard and Cobden's Letters', published in The Transactions of the Honourable Society of Cymmrodorion, 1958, pp. 54-81.

A Carmarthenshire general dealer's ledger, used also as a memorandum book by John Thomas, Cwmsydan, Llansadwrn, Carmarthenshire.

Correspondence, papers and press cuttings, 1911-1912, relating to the Welsh Nationalist League (Cyngrair Cenedlaethol Cymreig), formed at Caernarfon in January 1911 to press for Home Rule for Wales on federal lines and organised by Dr Edward Lloyd Owen ('Iorwerth Feddyg') and John Williams ('Cambrensis'), both of Cricieth. There are also a few papers relating to the St David's Order of Chivalry (Urdd Arwrol Dewi Sant), founded in 1912. The correspondence, mainly addressed to 'Cambrensis', includes letters from W. Llewelyn Williams, MP, Walter F. Roch, MP, Sir J. Herbert Lewis, MP, Francis Edwards, MP, E. T. John, MP (8), Clement Edwards, MP, the Reverend E. Tyrrell-Green, Beriah Gwynfe Evans (2), Silyn Roberts and Lord Harlech.

Some thirty-eight letters, 1906-1930, in English and Welsh, addressed to Thomas Huws Davies, relating to the work of the Welsh Church Commission (of which he was secretary, 1914-1940) and to other religious bodies in Wales and the Welsh Church Acts.
Among the correspondents are J. H. Davies, 1913 (ff. 5-10), A. G. Edwards, Archbishop of Wales, 1909-1923 (ff. 13-15, 17), E. T. John, 1930 (ff. 21-24), Frank Morgan, 1920 (f. 27), Sir H[enry] W. Primrose, 1918-1919 (ff. 28-41), Alfred Thomas, Baron Pontypridd, 1913 (ff. 48-49), R[ichard] M[acaulay] Thomas, 1909-1911 (ff. 50-57), Sir John Williams, 1909 (f. 58), and W. Llewelyn Williams, 1910-1917 (ff. 61-70). Also included are one letter each from Davies, 1919 (ff. 42-45), and A. G. Edwards, 1920 (f. 16), to Sir H. W. Primrose; a letter from C[harles] P[restwich] Scott to J. Arthur Price, 1912 (f. 47); and two drafts of a letter by Davies, on behalf of the Home Secretary, published in The Times, 17 June 1912, p. 4 (ff. 71-77).

A group of fifty-four holograph letters, 1929-1932, from Thomas Jones, Cerrigellgwm[-isa], Ysbyty Ifan, Denbighshire, to Evan Roberts, Llandderfel, Merioneth, relating to the writer's literary and musical pursuits. Some letters refer to the Welsh ancestry of Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States of America. Also included in the collection is a holograph letter, 15 November, 1932, from Einion Jones, Cerrigellgwm-isa, to Evan Roberts, enclosing a pedigree of his father Thomas Jones and a copy of the latter's last poem.

An essay entitled 'Hanes a Gwaith John Jones ('Tudur Llwyd') o'r Weirglodd Gilfach, Plwyf Llanuwchllyn, 1774-1854' by 'Glyn Cothi', i.e. Evan Roberts, Llandderfel, Merioneth. The essay was submitted for competition at a chair eisteddfod at Hen Gapel, Llanuwchllyn, in 1935.

Cites authorities, including the roll of 'Morgan Abbott' [?Morgan ap Rhys, abbot of Strata Florida in the 1440s] and the book of 'Hoell Moythee'.

Twenty-nine letters, April-May 1896, discussing the proposed establishment of a Welsh (or Cymric) Institute as a meeting place for the Welsh in London. The letters are addressed to T. J. Evans as editor of the London Kelt (Celt Llundain), in which some were subsequently published.
The correspondents (listed on f. 59) include A. C. Humphreys-Owen (ff. 26-27), J. E. Morris (ff. 32-33), Sir Lewis Morris (ff. 34-35), Isambard Owen (ff. 36-37), J. Bryn Roberts (ff. 48-49), J. A sample copy, [1929], of part of a projected printed book by Ezra Pound, to be called 'The Complete Works of Guido Cavalcanti', containing also four autograph poems and a prose fragment by Dylan Thomas, [1936]-[early 1940s], and two typescript poems by Vernon Watkins, [c. 1939]. Pound's book was intended for publication in 1929 but was abandoned, with only the first 56 pages printed, when the Aquila Press went bankrupt. The present volume appears to be a sample copy, of which two similar ones are recorded (see Donald Gallup, Ezra Pound: A Bibliography (Charlottesville, 1983), p. 153), consisting of the first two gatherings only (ff. 2-9) and filled out with blank leaves (ff. 10-74). The original Aquila Press fragments were later incorporated into the composite work Guido Cavalcanti Rime, ed. by Ezra Pound (Genoa, [1932]).
The Dylan Thomas poems are 'Then was my neophyte', [1936] (f. 11) (published in Twenty-five Poems (London, 1936), pp. 40-41), 'We lying by seasand', [1937x1939] (f. 74 verso) (first published in Poetry (Chicago), 49.4 (January 1937), 183, and collected in The Map of Love (London, 1939), p. 8), 'Paper and sticks', [early 1940s] (tipped in on f. 12) (first published in Seven, 6 (Autumn 1939), 6, and collected in Deaths and Entrances (London, 1946), p. 23), and 'Once below a time', [early 1940s] (tipped in on ff. 13-14) (first published in Life and Letters Today, 24.31 (March 1940), 274-275; see Collected Poems 1934-1952 (London, [1952]), pp. 132-133); the prose fragment (tipped in on f. 15) is the end of 'One Warm Saturday', [1938], the last story in Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog (London, 1940), pp. 253-254. The two Vernon Watkins poems, 'The windows', 1939, and 'A bronze head', [c. 1939], are apparently unpublished (tipped in on ff. 16-17). A dried leaf found loose within the volume has been placed in an archival sleeve.

Thirty-three autograph and typescript letters, 1935-40, from Dylan Thomas to the novelist, critic and broadcaster Desmond Hawkins, containing personal news and comments on his literary work, including a detailed response (ff. 25-9) to Hawkins's questions about poems included in The Map of Love (London, 1939). Two sketches pasted on to ff. 18 and 19 do not appear to be Thomas's work. The letters were published in Ferris, Paul (ed.): The Collected Letters of Dylan Thomas (London, 1985).
