Llangynfelyn (Gwyddynys)

Title deeds of houses and lands in the township of Gwyddynys in the parish of Llangynfelyn, 1562-1659. Properties include half of Tyre Y Vron Goch, in a bond to lease by Ieuan ap Owen ap Mores, 1562; Penryn or Tythin Gweithe Ynys, acquired by John Pryse of Gogerddan, 1581; Tythen Llwyn Y Gyrne, mortgaged by Richard ap John ap Reedderch of Llanfihangel Genau'r-glyn to John Pryse, 1581; and a moiety or half of Tythen y Neyadd in Gwddynys, acquired by Gruffith ap Ieuan ap Jenkin of Llanfihangel Genau'r-glyn, 1585, and sold to Sir Richard Pryse of Gogerddan, 1609. There is also an account of lands of Gruffith ap Ieuan ap Jenkin sold at the time of Thomas Pryse’s marriage, 1592; and a bond by John Evans of Noyadd Gweddynys to Sir Richard Pryse, for performance of covenants, 1659.

Llangynfelyn (Lodge Park or Parke Bodvage and Parke Newydd)

Title deeds of Lodge Park or Parke Bodvage, called Modvagedd or Motevage in the earlier documents, in the parish of Llangynfelyn, 1569-1661. The first deed is a lease of Modvagedd by Phellippe Williams of Aberystwyth and his wife Elen Lewes, to their son, Richard Phellippe (Phillipps), stipulating suit of mill at at Melin y Coed, 1569. Other deeds comprise a mortgage by Richard Phillipps to John Stedman of Strata Florida, of Motevageth and a parcel of meadow called Parke Newydd, 1578; deeds by Richard Phillipps, his son Henry Phillips, and John Stedman, for the assignment and sale of both properties to Richard Pryse of Gogerddan, 1593-1595; and leases by Sir Richard Pryse to Thomas Bushell of Euston, 1636/7, and to William Sumner of Pollicott, Buckinghamshire., describing the park, fenced on one side with a stone wall, and on the other side with a hedge and ditch, together with a sheepwalk, 1661.

Pentrehedyn Street

Quitclaim by Mary vch Howell of Machynlleth, widow of Richard ap David ap H'oll ap John, to John D'd ap Ll'en ap Gruffyth of Uwchygarreg, of land in Streete Gwyr Dehybarth, otherwise Pentre yr Hedyn, Machynlleth.

Miscellaneous Gogerddan and other Cardiganshire deeds

Title deeds of houses and lands in the several combined parishes of Caron, Llanbadarn Odwyn, Llanddewibrefi and Llanbadarn Odwyn, 1549-1676, and
Creuddyn, Clarach and Llanfihangel Genau’r-glyn, 1592-1636, as well as in the separate parishes of Llandysilio [Gogo], 1476, Llanfihangel-y-Creuddyn, 1544-1590, Nancwnlle, 1569, Cwmystwyth, Llangwyryfon and Ysbyty Ystwyth, 1578-1622, Llanwnnen, 1586, Llanfihangel Ystrad, 1859-1862, Llanddewi Aber-arth (Aberaeron), 1861, the manor of Creuddyn, 1878, and Llanbadarn Fawr (Bont-goch), 1881, where the numbers of deeds are too small to create a separate series for each parish. There are also original bundles of final concords and deeds, 1494-1726, bonds where the parish is not specified at all, 1512-1674, an inquisition post-mortem John Pryse, 1585; and agreements for the purchase of rights in crown lands in the lordships of Creuddyn and Cyfoethybrenin, 1862-1865.

Llandysiliogogo deed

Gift in fee tail by Gruffith ap Ll’n ap D’d Vachan of Llandysiliogogo to John Gleyse of Haverfor[dwest], of lands in Eskeyr Pennarth in the commote of Caerwedros, 1476.

Misc. bonds and deeds (parishes not specified)

Miscellaneous bonds and deeds, 1512-1695, 1817-1886, which do not specify the names or locations of properties. The bonds are for payment or for performance of covenants in deeds from which they have become separated. Names of parties include William ap John Voya, burgess Aberystwyth, 1512, 1532; Phelippe Williams of Llanfihangel Genau’r-glyn and his son, Richard Phillipps of Aberystwyth, 1560-1570; John Pryse of Gogerddan, 1562-1579; Henry Vaughan, 1588; John Vaughan of Golden Grove, Carmarthenshire, 1621, Sir Henry Johnes of Abermarlais, 1625, Richard Pryse of Gogerddan (elder and younger), 1621-1674, and David Jenkins of Aberystwyth, 1817. Other items include a memorandum of a lease to Humffrey Gr’ Lle’n David and Rees ap ?Cantor, 1562; general releases to Sir Richard Pryse of Gogerddan (elder and younger), by various London citizens, 1603, 1612, 1656; and an acquittance by James Jones of Dolaucothi to Sir Richard Pryse, 1653.

Llanfihangel-y-Creuddyn deeds

Title deeds relating to the parish of Llanfihangel-y-Creuddyn, comprising a bond by Phylipp William of Aberystwyth, permitting his guardians to occupy Tythyn Creor Tuder Lloid, 1544; a bond to Morgan D'd Lloid of Llanbadarn Fawr for the surrender of a lease on Ye Lluest ye Bystle Ddy, 1578; and the will of David Ychan ap D'd, made in 1588/9, devising Rhiwarthen in Llanbadarn Fawr, Nant Kynon in Llanfihangel-y-Creuddyn, and his interest in Gilwern, proved 1590, with inventory.

Nancwnlle bond

Bond by Rise Gwyn of Nancwnlle to John Pryse of Gogerddan for further assurance of properties called Tythyn y Gottel, Pentrey’r Velin, Perth y Neyoedd, etc. in the parish of Nancwnlle, to trustees of Rise Gwyn and his heirs by Marie vch John, his wife, 1569.

Cwmystwyth, Llangwyryfon and Ysbyty Ystwyth deeds

Title deeds relating to Cwmystwyth [parish of Gwnnws], Langwyryfon and Ysbyty Ystwyth, 1578-1622. They comprise a bond for peaceful possession of Yr Havod Glace, Llangwyryfon, until redemption of the mortgage, 1577/8; the marriage settlement of Thomas Jenkin, son of Jenkin D'd ap Ievan ap John of Ysbyty Ievan (Ysbyty Ystwyth) and Elizabeth vch Moris ap Res ap Mores, 1599; and three deeds for Rhos y Tyddyn, part of the grange of Cwmystwyth belonging to the dissolved monastery of Strata Florida, which was in the hands of Morgan Rees, alias Jenkins, 1601, Morgan Glyn of Glynclywedog, Montgomeryshire, 1605, and Watkin Morgan, 1622

Llanwnnen deed

A family settlement by Morgan ap David Lloid [ap Morgan Vaughan] of Ystrad, of Tythin Llysvaen, a water corn mill, Tythin Pen Glan Vawr, etc., Tythin Dol Vridi in Llanwnnen and Ystrad, Cardiganshire, 1586.

Creuddyn, Genau’r-glyn, Dyffryn Clarach, and Caeo deeds

Title deeds relating to lands in the commote of Creuddyn, Dyffryn Clarach and Genau’r-glyn, including the tenement of Tythen (other lands named), initially demised by royal letters patent to William Clerk in 1555 and to Henry [Radclife], Earl of Sussex in 1571. The deeds comprise successive assignments to John Muschampe of London, 1592, Maurice Vaughan of Glanleri, 1593/4, Henry Best of London (together with property in Camrose, Pembrokeshire), 1598/9, and Francis Smyth of Cosheston, Pembrokeshire, 1604/5; a family conveyance by John Meyrick of Pembroke to Rowland Meyrick of Gladestry, Radnorshire, 1606, and a deed of sale, 1607, by William Vaughan of Tretower, Breconshire, to Rowland Meyrick of a moiety of those properties and others which were part of the possessions of Rice Griffith, attainted, and a moiety of a mill called Kilinden, otherwise Kilmeharen, in Caeo, Carmarthenshire, lately belonging to the dissolved monastery of Talley, all sold to Reginald Nicholas and John Meyrick in 1586; the moiety belonging to Reginald Nicholas had been sold to William Vaughan in 1605. Finally there is an assignment and release by Rowland Meyrick to Sir Richard Pryse of Gogerddan, 1607-1608. The file also contains a release by Katherine [Howard], countess dowager of Suffolk, and Sir William Howard, KB to Sir Richard Pryse from any charges following the under-valuation of premises in the same locations (tenants named), conveyed by letters patent by Elizabeth I in 1595 to Gelly Merrick and Henry Lyndley, 1635/6

Creuddyn, Genau’r-glyn, Dyffryn Clarach and Caeo deed

Bargain and sale by Robert [Devereux], earl of Essex, Gelly Meyrick and Henry Lyndley, both of London, to Reginald Nicholas of Prestbury, Gloucestershire, and John Meyrick of Llangwm, Pembrokeshire, of properties in the commote of Creuddyn, Tythen and other properties in Genau’r-glyn and Dyffryn Clarach, which were late the possession of Rees Griffith, esq., attainted, and granted by letters patent in 1570/1, to Henry Radcliff, and a moiety of a mill called Kilinden, otherwise Kilmeharen, in Caeo, Carmarthenshire, lately belonging to the dissolved monastery of Talley, all of which premises were, with others, bargained and sold by letters patent to Gelly Meyrick and Henry Lyndley in 1595.

Llanfihangel Ystrad leases

Lease by Henry Touchet Davies of Henley in Arden, Warwickshire, to Pryse Loveden, of a pasture belonging to the Lloyd Jack estate, Llanfihangel Ystrad, with integral plan. 1862; a lease by Pryse Loveden to Walter Jenkins of Blainwern, of the stables and dog kennels for conversion to houses, shops and warehouses, and an accompanying letter to J.G. Williams, the Gogerddan agent, 1862.

Llanddewi Aber-arth (Aberaeron) lease

Lease by Alban Lewis Thomas Jones Gwynne of Monachty, Cardiganshire, to David Davies, of a plot of land with a house recently erected there, in Oxford Street, Aberaeron, in the parish of Llanddewi Aber-arth, 1861.

Seals, fragments, labels, wrappers etc.

Seals, fragments of documents, labels and wrappers, [16th cent]-1960. Most of these were found detached from the original documents, with the exception of the ‘Old Schedule’ labels, which were removed to accommodate the new arrangement.

Old Schedule labels and paper wrappers

Original parchment labels written on the verso of disused documents and attached to bundles which were listed in the Gogerddan ‘Old Schedule’. The contents have been reorganised deliberately for the purposes of the current catalogue (see note at ref. GAB), together with old paper wrappers marked ‘Simon’s ?will’ and reversed letters [from blotting]

Gogerddan surveys and valuations

Surveys and valuations of lands, buildings and stock on parts of the Gogerddan estate, in the parishes of Llanbadarn Fawr, Llanfihangel Genau’r-glyn and Llangynfelyn, sometimes with maps enclosed, 1766-1919. Some of the surveys include observations on the condition of the tenements and allowances by the landlord for improvements. The names of several of the surveyors are given and the bills for their services are included.

The properties include Brynllys, Dole Clettwr, Lodge, Maesnant, Glanyrafon, etc., Ynyseidiol, Ynys Vergy and Pont Aberlery, Tan y Dinas, Aberystwyth Mill, Tan y Dinas, Maes y Go Vach, Maes y Go Vawr and houses in the town, Bryngwyn Bach, Tynyrhos, Rhydypennau, etc., Dolen Eglwys, Cwmbwa, Cwmsymlog Canol, Plynlimon sheepwalk (added to a note on the legal dispute with Lord Milford over the Pembrokeshire coal mines), Neuadd Llangynfelyn, Trwyn y buarth, Wenffrwd, etc., and the stock of David Morgan at Gogerddan (animals named) with a covering letter; and Thomas Lewis’ bill to Edward Loveden Loveden, with his observations.
