Letter from Messrs Drew and Woosnam from Newtown, to Viscount Clive,
Part of Powis Castle Estate Records,
Have written to the clerk of the peace to know how and when the reward of £50 will be paid to Samuel Pugh.
Letter from R. J. Harrison from Caer Howell, to Viscount Clive [in London],
Part of Powis Castle Estate Records,
Sir Charles Jones and he have visited Montgomery gaol, but the prison authorities deny all allegations of lax discipline. The keeper has, however, been guilty of carelessness and indiscretion in the admittance of strangers, but that was probably due to his good nature, and he is now sufficiently alarmed to prevent a recurrence of such trouble. Ingram, Powell, and others involved in the disturbances have been committed. The gaoler has received an unsealed intimidating letter. Suggests that the pensioners be relieved as soon as possible as they are expensive to the county and also because their tractability and efficiency leaves a little to be desired.
Deposition of James Caser Stainer, sergeant on the staff of the Shropshire Militia,
Part of Powis Castle Estate Records,
Touching a seditious conversation which he overheard at the Sun Inn, Newtown, on May 3. [In the form of a letter directed from Shrewsbury to Viscount Clive at Hyde Park Terrace, London].
Draft letter from [Viscount Clive] from 1 Hyde Park Terrace, to Lord J[ohn] Russell,
Part of Powis Castle Estate Records,
Has heard that Ingram has been captured by one Samuel Pugh and committed. Desires therefore to know to whom he is to apply for the £50 reward. Pugh was one of the special constables engaged at Llanidloes on April 30. Other ringleaders have been committed.
Letter from John Owens from Newtown, to Viscount [Clive],
Part of Powis Castle Estate Records,
Powell has been committed, but has been granted bail. Entertains no doubt of his conviction. An equally strong case has been prepared against Charles Jones. It is imperative that Jones, who is now in London, be arrested, because the poor people at both Newtown and Llanidloes declare that it was his and Powell's oratory that led them to commit breaches of the law.
Letter from T. Edmund Marsh from Llanidloes, to [Viscount Clive],
Part of Powis Castle Estate Records,
Lewis Humphreys has been captured at Merthir Tidvil and is at present detained at Cardiff gaol. Isaac Lewis, one of the drillers, has surrendered himself; he, however, was not involved in the riots. Two dangerous rioters are now in Montgomery gaol, - James Morris, who stabbed the special constable, and --- Evans, a tailor of Newtown, who was 'decidedly the most active in the work of destruction at the Hotel'.
Letter from J. H. Stirke, Capt. 12th Regt, from Llanidloes, to the mayor of Llanidloes,
Part of Powis Castle Estate Records,
Complaining of the lack of fire, candles, cooking facilities, etc., at the regiment's quarters. Appended is a post-script by Wm Wilson, ensign, on behalf of Capt. Stirke, stating that it is desirable both for convenience and the safety of the town, that the whole detachment be quartered in the same place.
Letter from T. Edmund Marsh from Llanidloes, to [Viscount Clive],
Part of Powis Castle Estate Records,
The occupation of the New Flannel Hall will cause considerable loss to its tenant, Evan Mills, unless he can, through his lordship's efforts, secure some compensation from the Treasury. Farmers in the neighbourhood declare that practically all their guns have been restored.

Reply to No. MB2/163. The magistrates will do well to exercise their discretion in admitting to bail such persons as they shall think fit. Will draw the attention of the Home Office to the case of Isaac Lewis.
Draft Letter from [Viscount Clive] to Lord John Russell,
Part of Powis Castle Estate Records,
Lewis Humphreys has been captured at Merthyr Tydfil. Has ordered the pensioners at Montgomery to be discharged, and suggests that a detachment of the 12th Regt be quartered there until the Assizes. The new prison, not yet surrounded by a wall, is liable to an attack.
Letter from R. J. Harrison from Montgomery, to Viscount Clive,
Part of Powis Castle Estate Records,
The military force has not arrived, and nothing is known of its movements. Encloses another unsealed letter received by the gaoler.
Draft letter from Viscount Clive to Major Harrison,
Part of Powis Castle Estate Records,
Accepts the major's report on Montgomery gaol, and will take no further notice of any disquieting rumours. The unsealed letter received by the gaoler must be the production of a madman. Lord John Russell directs that the pensioners be not discharged until the arrival of a detachment of the 12th Regt.
