Administration and trust papers of Pryse Loveden

Papers relating to the adminstration of Pryse Loveden of Gogerddan, who died intestate in 1855. They include the letters of administration, together with accounts of his trustees, Hon. Thomas Pryce Lloyd of Pengwern, Flintshire, and Rev. James Allen of Castlemartin, Pembrokeshire, 1846-1862; vouchers of Capt. Edward Lewis Pryse, who acted as the agent for the Gogerddan estate, 1855-1858; letters exchanged between the solicitors Boys and Tweedie and the trustees and agents, copies and abstracts of deeds, and other relevant papers, 1855-1862.

Deeds relating to properties at Bryn-mawr, Llangatwg and Llanelli, Breconshire

Deeds for several leasehold properties owned by the Dukes of Beaufort, situated in King Street, Glamorgan Street, Orchard Street and Cemetery Road, Bryn-mawr, in the parishes of Llangatwg and Llanelli, co. Brecon, 1846-1889, endorsed with licences to assign, up to 1895. The properties include several cottages and houses with gardens, some of which were later divided into smaller dwellings, and a stable and coach house. The successive lessees appear to have been mostly tradesmen such as drapers, shoemakers, grocers, publicans, a postmaster, a druggist, William Evans the gas manager, and professionals such as a surgeon and a nonconformist minister. The names of several women appear, usually as executrices of the respective lessees.

Barddoniaeth

Papurau rhyddion yn awr wedi eu rhwymo yn gyfrolau ydyw Evan James MSS 8-15. Yn Evan James MSS 8-11, sef y rhai sy'n cynnwys barddoniaeth Ieuan, gwelir ar gefnau rhai dalennau y nodiad 'copied to book', yn llaw Iago; Evan James MS 3 ydyw'r llyfr hwn. Ar eraill gwelir 'copied to the music book', yn llaw Iago eto; nid yw'r llyfr hwn yn y casgliad. Gwelir fod nifer o'r cerddi wedi bod trwy'r post, rhai yn llythyrau at aelodau o'i deulu, eraill i eisteddfodau. Mae ychydig o waith Tomos ab Iago yn gymysg ag eiddo ei frawd oherwydd defnyddio'r un ddalen gan y ddau; mae'n bosibl hefyd fod nifer o'r cerddi dienw, neu â ffugenwau yn unig, yn waith Tomos - tebyg iawn i'w gilydd yw'r ddwy ysgrifen. Mae peth ansicrwydd hefyd ynglyn ag awduriaeth y cerddi yn Evan James MS 10, ff. 58-65.

Pembrokeshire coal mining letters

Letters to members of the Pryse family of Gogerddan and to Edward Loveden of Buscot Park, with occasional copies of replies and third-party letters forwarded by their agents, concerning the operation of the coal mines in Pembrokeshire, 1773-1866.
The collieries most frequently mentioned are Moreton, Hopshhill, Trevane and Vadson in the vicinty of Tenby and Saundersfoot. The letters are from the Pryse family’s agents and solicitors, other colliery proprietors, the colliery foremen, mining engineers and surveyors. They provide detailed information about the history of coal mining in Pembrokeshire, the leasing of the collieries, and the practical and economic aspects of coal production. There are many references to the problems of flooding in the pits, the introduction of steam engines, transport of coal and the construction of railways. The letters reveal the involvement of other individuals in the coal trade, such as John Philipps, Lord Milford, Henry Phelps of Norchard, Mr Barlow, John Curr of Sheffield, Edward Martin of Morriston, Owen Thomas of Moreton, and Andrew Brace of Moreton. Several letters remark on the inconsistent methods of working, the lack of competent supervision, disputes at the coal pits, and Edward Loveden Loveden’s concern that he was being cheated, resulting in the stoppage of work. There are some references to the general management of the Abernantbychan estate, and to the manors of East and West Pembroke, especially with regard to shooting game birds.
