Manor of Cyfeiliog chief rents

The collection comprises property in p's Penegoes, Llanwrin, Cemais, Darowen, Llanbryn-mair and Machynlleth (including t's Isygarreg and Uwchygarreg), all in co. Mont. Most of the rents were collected at Michaelmas; the date of collection is not always given. Collectors: J. Davies, 1808-1816, Samuel Hughes, 1817-1833, David Jones, 1834-1856, Joseph Owen Jones, 1856-1860, Nathan Burlinson, 1861, Thomas Adey Cox, 1862, William Jones, 1863-1871, Owen Hughes, 1871-1879. Deeds for land purchases by Charles Watkin Williams Wynn

Title deeds relating to farms and lands purchased by Charles Watkin Williams Wynn, situated mainly in the parish of Meifod, Montgomeryshire, 1582-1837. The properties include the Rhosfawr and Dyffryn estates, purchased in 1803, Pentrego, Maes-y-wern, Pen-y-coed, Main, Ceunant, etc., purchased 1806, Tyddyn y Cae Du in the township of Peniarth, purchased 1810, Allt Fawr purchased 1811, Peniarth Farm purchased 1812, Mathrafal or New Bridges in Llangynyw, and Gelly in the township of Peniarth, purchased 1813-1814. Among the former owners of the properties were Evan Meredith and his son David Evans of Mathrafal, the Phillips family of Pentrego, Humffreys (Humphreys) of Llwyn, Parry of Main and Penyvoil, Williams and Davies of Peniarth, Montgomeryshire, Richard Rocke of Trefnannu and Shrewsbury, Ann Jodrell of Ankerwyke, Buckinghamshire, William Mostyn Owen of Woodhouse and Thomas Owen Jones of Bishopsgate Street, London.
Many of the deeds are extremely complex and it may be necessary to search more than one file in the chronological sequence below, in order to trace all of the deeds relating to a single property.
Found with the deeds is the original schedule compiled in 1849, and a deed not listed in the schedule, 1853.

Title deeds and associated documents relating to purchases and exchanges by the Wynnstay estate of lands in Denbighshire and Flintshire, 1859-1927. Two separate files concern Teathams Farm in the parish of Ruabon, 1859-1876. Others relate to property in Rhos Stansty, Wrexham, 1869-1881, in Ruthin, 1881, lands at Gresford taken for the Great Western Railway, 1880-1881, mines and minerals, and Rutters Farm in the parish of Erbistock, 1907-1927

Montgomeryshire deeds

Title deeds and associated documents relating to purchases by the Wynnstay estate of lands in the parishes of Meifod, Llanwrin and Llanbryn-mair, Montgomeryshire, 1836-1945. The properties include Fridd Farm, Meifod, purchased from the Powis Castle estate in 1899-1900.

Miscellaneous deeds and documents (Wynnstay estate sales)

Miscellaneous files containing mainly draft and copy conveyances of properties belonging to the Wynnstay estate, sold by Sir Watkin Williams Wynn and/or the trustees of the settled estates in Denbighshire, Merioneth, Montgomeryshire and Salop, and the Maenan estate, Caernarfonshire, 1840-1938. Fields and unnamed properties generally have not been included in the file descriptions.

Particulars and rentals

Particulars and rentals of parts of the Wynnstay estate, the first watermarked 1857 and the last tentatively dated post-1882, listing estates in Denbighshire purchased by the late Sir Watkin Williams Wynn [fifth Baronet] subsequent to his marriage settlement of 1817 and devised by his will to trustees to uses, other entailed estates, and chief, fee farm and other rents.

Tramway and railway agreements

Agreements and other associated papers concerning the construction of tramways and railways on land belonging to Wynnstay or otherwise affecting the estate, 1878-1891. The files relate to the Glyn Valley Tramway, 1878, Pant Glas Tramway at Eglwyseg, 1878-1884, the Great Western Railway at Ruabon, 1882, and The Shropshire Railways Company in Denbighshire, 1891. Some papers in the file for Pant Glas Tramway relate to the erection of fences in the manor of Llanegwest.

Miscellaneous legal papers

Miscellaneous legal papers accumulated during the routine administrative work carried out by Longueville and Co. solicitors on behalf of the Wynnstay estate. They include an account book for the Court of Great Sessions for Merioneth, 1782-1784; lawyers’ instructions, cases and opinions, drafts of crown leases of gold and silver ores, and plans for non-conformist chapels, 1865-1925.

Records resulting from official administrative procedures and relating to the constitution and government of the lordship of Ruthin or Dyffryn Clwyd in Denbighshire, comprising an original file of copies of court rolls, 1364-1532; further copies of court rolls, 1403-1574; appointments of officials, 1521-1571; a court roll of the lordship of Ruthin and Dyffryn Clwyd, 1564; a court roll of the College of St Peter, Ruthin, 1564; an inquisition of lands in Rhosllefyrion, Llannerch and Llandyrnog, 1605-1609; an order, grant and particulars, etc. of the lordship and borough of Ruthin, 1606-[16]87; and the case of the Corporation of Ruthin concerning the election of a burgess, 1636-1678.

Legal and arbitration papers, Much Wenlock,

Papers deriving from lawsuits or arbitration involving the successive owners of the Much Wenlock estate or their tenants, comprising a legal opinion on a lease, [post-1603]; an arbitration award for land in Spittle Street, 1649; cases of the Gage family, 1703-1714; case of Sir John Wynn concerning the election of a bailiff, 1714; an ejectment from farm of the manor of Much Wenlock, 1720; prosecutions for holding a market at Broseley without licence, 1745, and Sir Watkin Williams Wynn’s case respecting Wenlock enclosure award, 1780.

Family settlements, Wynn of Gwydir,

Marriage settlements, other family settlements and associated deeds and documents of the Wynn family of Gwydir, Caernarfonshire, and their immediate relatives, namely the Eyton family of Watstay, 1499-1687, Sir John Wynn, 1578-1620; Sir Richard Wynn, 1627-1642; Sir Owen Wynn, his son Sir Richard Wynn, his brothers Maurice and Henry Wynn, and the latter’s son Sir John Wynn, 1654-1681.

Oswestry/Llanforda estate

The collection comprises property in p. Oswestry (including t's Trefarclawdd, Maesbury, Cynhinion, Pentre-gaer, Trefonnen, Llanforda and Treflach), p. Selatyn, p. St Martin's, p. Baschurch, (t. Soughton) p. Llansilin, and Tancoedygaer, all in Shropshire. Collectors: Richard Croxon, 1809-1838, John Croxon, 1839-1851, Nathan Burlinson, 1852-1860. From 1855 (R110/1a), the collection includes the Llwynmaen estate (see the Llwynymaen Estate collection, 1839-1854). After 1860, the property will be found in R116/3a, then in R117/2a, both of which are rentals of co. Salop. and co. Denb., estates of which Sir Watkin Williams Wynn is seised in fee simple; then they will be found in the collection entitled Farm and Cottage Rents.
