Reverend James Owen and others: Sermons

Notes of sermons preached at Salop - the first on 7 January 1704 and the last on 24 March 1705 - by 'Mr. Owens', probably the Reverend James Owen (1654-1706), who became minister of High Street Chapel, Shrewsbury in 1700. Beginning at the other end of the book there are also sermons by Mr Perot, Mr Tallents (the Reverend Owen's co-pastor), Messrs Bradly, Edwards and Reynolds and Dr Giles.

Reverend David Thomas: Diaries

A collection of ten diaries kept by the Reverend David Thomas of Penmaen (1757-1837), being bound and interleaved copies of Vox Stellarum or A Loyal Almanac, by Francis Moore, for the years 1809-1811, 1813, 1815, 1817-1820, and of Moore's Almanack Improved for 1812, and including sermons and sermon notes, notes of baptisms, hymns, etc.

Reverend David Ellis: Cerddi, llythyrau, &c.

Transcript written by the Rev. David Ellis at various times. Originally consisted of four or five separate books. Book I, pp. 1-270 written in 1789 (p. 119); Book II, pp. 271-398 and 713-794 written in 1794 (pp. 271 and 380); Book III, pp. 399-556; Book IV, pp. 559-608; Book V, pp. 609-712. It appears that pp. 47-148 were copied from Pen[iarth MS] 124, pp. 233-266, or from a common original, and pp. 747-797 from Cwrtmawr MSS 3 and 4, which were used by David Ellis. The version of the Gododin (pp. 559-608) was used by Rev. J. Williams ab Ithel (see p. 559) in his edition of that poem.

A volume containing copies, [19 cent.], of letters from the Rev. Edward Owen of Warrington to the Rev. John Williams of Llanrwst between 15 November 1789 and 8 March 1805, which contain many interesting references to Goronwy Owen.

Rental book of the Lleweni estate

A rental book of the estates of Lleweni and Gwisaney for 1636-1644, giving the names of the farms, the tenants and the amount of the rent in each case. The book also contains similar details for the "Gwissaney demeanes", described (p. 70) as "my master's paternall estate". A letter from Phillip Yorke of Erddig to 'Dear Bloady' has been inserted at p. 107 and a letter, dated 8 January 1651, addressed to Robert Davies of Gwisaney and signed by Hugh Thomas, Joseph Roberts and Peter Davies, has been inserted at p. 160. A loose leaf containing a summary of the Gwisaney rentals is at p. 170.

Rent roll

A rent roll, 1644-1646, of the Plas-isa demesnes and also of Bryn Eyryn, Llandrillo and Llansanffraid. In a note on p. 4 the writer states "The 20th of December 1644, Rec. of my brother Robert Griffeth in part of paiement for a part of Plasisa Demeanes which he held 28l.6s.".

A volume of sermons, in Welsh, preached at Llanddowror and Llandeilo between 11 November 1753 and 22 October 1758. The sermons were probably preached by the Rev. Griffith Jones; parts of the volume are in the hand of the Rev. Thomas Evans, later curate of Llanddowror.

A case containing seven books of sermons, in Welsh, preached at various places in Brecknockshire between 1773 and 1794; the material sheds some light upon the prevalence of the Welsh language in the county at that time.

A volume containing sermons, in Welsh, written between June 27 1680 and April 24 1686, which seem to have been taken down by a member of the congregation as in many cases the name of the preacher - 'Mr. E.' or 'Mr. Ev.' is given. The words 'y bregeth ddiwaetha yn y bryn' are written at the end of the sermon on p. 309.
