Bob Owen, Croesor, Penrhyndeudraeth. Was pleased that the University of Wales had awarded Huw T. Edwards an honorary doctorate. Had intended to write to Huw T. Edwards in praise of Tros y Tresi. Found the last chapter especially fine. The members of the Croesor branch of the FUW will be praising Huw T. Edwards at Aberystwyth the following Monday afternoon. Welsh.

Bob Owen, Prince Edward War Memorial Committee, Grange Road, Rhyl. Writes following their recent conversation concerning the future Consultant Orthopaedic Cover for North Wales. Outlines in detail the current arrangements. The recent recommendations of the Platt Committee and other suggestions for the re-organisation of the service. Hopes that this makes the picture fairly clear for Huw T. Edwards.

Bobi Jones, Abergeldi, Victoria Terrace, Aberystwyth. Has just received a copy of Huw T. Edwards's book as a gift on his return home following the Christmas and New Year holidays. Much appreciates Huw T. Edwards's letter written from the heart. Wishes Huw T. Edwards well in his work for Wales during 1961. Welsh.

Brigadier H. S. K. Mainwaring, Hafod-y-Coed, St Asaph, Flintshire. Appreciates the fact that the recipient found the time to write so fully. It has been a privilege to work with the recipient as Lord Lieutenant for Flintshire, and he will be sorry to break his connection with the County Advisory Committee. But the writer feels that he is acting correctly, and that these offices should not be carried by the same person for too long. Has examined carefully the existing composition of the Petty Sessional Divisions, and makes a number of suggestions which he hopes will prove helpful. Recommends a number of people whom he would judge to be worthy of sitting on the bench.

Brinley Richards, Maesteg. Thanks for the cheque for the testimonial to the Rev. E. Curig Davies. Is glad that Huw T. Edwards's health is much improved. Enjoyed Huw T. Edwards's note in Y Faner the current week. Knows that it is pointless telling him not to overdo it, but such is the wish of all his friends. Welsh.

Brinley Thomas, 13 Havard Road, Llanelly. Staff difficulties at the school prevented him from being at today's meeting. Is dismayed by Huw T. Edwards's action, and yet is full of admiration for him. Understands the frustration which Huw T. Edwards has experienced. If only the Government would display the same sincerity in its dealings with Wales. The existing governmental attitude is 'nothing but hollow mockery of a situation which is steadily worsening'. Wales is still in dire need of Huw T. Edwards's service in the future. Will write again when the situation is clearer.

Bryan Michie, Programme Controller, Independent Television for South Wales and the West of England, 187-93 Oxford Street, London W1. Thanks for the letter about David Lloyd whom the writer recalls as a wonderful singer. Would like to meet Lloyd and hear him sing. Has Lloyd any engagement arranged to which the writer could come along? He would very much enjoy a trip to North Wales.

Bryn Davies, 16 Newborough Street, Blaenau Ffestiniog. Writes in appreciation of Huw T. Edwards's latest stand in deciding to dedicate the rest of his life to work ever more for Wales. The trades unions have grown strong enough to defend what Socialism has gained for Britain, but one cannot expect the unions to save a nation which is in real danger of destruction. Dedicated individuals are needed to attempt such a task. Hopes that Huw T. Edwards will be spared for many years; he should not drive himself too hard. Hopes that they will be able to hear Huw T. Edwards speak at the Bro Ffestiniog Association before very long. Welsh.

C. C. Davies, Town Clerk of the Borough of Pwllheli, Municipal Buildings, Penlan Street, Pwllheli. A recent meeting of the Council referred to Huw T. Edwards's recent resignation as Chairman of the Council for Wales and Monmouthshire in the wake of the Government's rejection of the repeated demand by the Council for the appointment of a Secretary of State for Wales. The Pwllheli Borough Council unanimously resolved to pay tribute to Huw T. Edwards for his invaluable services to Wales, especially his stand on this current issue.

C. E. [Thomas], Secretary to the North Wales District of the Workers' Educational Association, Rhoslas, 33 College Road, Bangor, Caernarvonshire. Thanks for Huw T. Edwards's letter received this morning together with the generous contribution to the memorial to Dafydd Thomas. The writer feels that Dafydd Thomas was one of the foremost benefactors of Wales during the preceding sixty years, and he is gratified that steps are being taken to demonstrate their appreciation of his excellent contribution. Welsh.

C. H. Darbishire, Penmaenmawr & Welsh Granite Co. Ltd, Head Office, Penmaenmawr, to Hugh Edwards, Cae Ithel, Talybont, Tal-y-cafn [Huw T. Edwards's father]. The recipient's letter arrived on the 10th in which he noted that he was one of the witnesses in the law suit with J. E. Jones of Bryn-mor. The writer is always pleased to assist his neighbours and his working colleagues. But he outlines his reasons for refusing to engage Huw T. Edwards. His place is already taken by someone else, he refused to re-join the Quarryworkers and Settmakers Union on 24 August 1920, and he has displayed a 'cowardly and mean' spirit in preventing twenty-five fellow workmen on the Quay from earning wages for their families. There are, as a result, doubts about Huw T. Edwards's sincerity. 'I have submitted your son's case to his fellow workmen, and I find that they are against allowing him to return to work after the disloyalty he has shown to their interests'.

C. Manford, 13 Kiln Lane, Hope, near Wrexham. Was delighted to read that Huw T. Edwards intended to return to the Labour Party. The writer has always supported the Labour cause, and has heard Huw T. Edwards speak on the platform on many occasions - always to great effect. Was sad to hear that the local Labour Party at Mold had rejected Huw T. Edwards's application for affiliation for membership. Hopes that Huw T. Edwards has taken this up with a higher authority because he has always been a great asset to the Labour cause. Was much interested in the reminiscences in Huw T. Edwards's book It was my Privilege. Believes that the failure of the trade union movement is attributable to a failure of leadership. People like Ernest Bevin should have been placed in charge of the trades unions, and they would then be prepared to face the challenge of the automated age today. It would almost be true to say that the trades unions are twenty-five years behind the times. The Labour Party were rejected in the general election of 1951, and have never since been given an opportunity to implement their full policies. But the trades union movement does not have the same excuse.
