A group of deeds principally concerned with the estate of the Manley family in the parish of Erbistock, Denbighshire. According to some published sources, Francis, Roger and John Manley were all sons of Sir Richard Manley, comptroller of the household of Henry, prince of Wales. However, these deeds show that Francis was the son of Cornelius Manley (died c.1623) and his wife Mary, daughter of Francis Lloyd of Hardwick, Shropshire. He married Dorothy, daughter of Sir Gerard Eyton of Eyton Isaf. Cornelius, their heir, married Elizabeth Spark of Bury St Edmunds in 1670 and they had several issue. Francis, their eldest surviving son, died without issue and in 1729 Thomas, brother of Francis, was in possession of the estate. He had three children, all of whom died without issue. Prior to 1811, the estate was bequeathed by Mrs Rebecca Lawrence, daughter of Thomas Manley, to Isaac George Manley, a descendant of John Manley. The printed schedule includes a family tree compiled using published sources, including Burke's Landed Gentry, and unpublished sources comprising the bishops transcripts for the parish of Erbistock, and documents and papers relating to the Manley family which were acquired with these deeds, and which are now NLW MS 22730E. The deeds were purchased in February 1987 from Henry Sotheran Ltd. For a group of related deeds, see NLW Deeds 1344-1372.

Copy Court Roll of Eglois' [Eglwyseg, lp Bromfield and Yale] recording that a jury of inquiry (names given) find that Hoell ap Edn' [?], a rebel at the time of the rebellion of Owin son of Gruffuth of Glyndo', forfeited all [his lands] in lp Bromfeld but that it is conceded for a fine of 40s. that [--] ap [?] Hoell and David his son have made in this court as [?] next heirs before the steward [--] and hold all the aforesaid lands to/of the aforesaid Eden' and [--], paying annually all rents and services that the aforesaid Hoell or [--] used to pay. Agreement that 2 shall peaceably maintain a 'hedge causey or weare' extending from a mill erected by 2 on the river Dee and the lands of 1, without let for 15 years. Annual rent: 8s. (to be paid at 1's mansion house at Sodill), half the fish taken at the weir between the river Dee and the lands of 1 and a third of the fish taken at the mill and 'causey' between the river Dee and the bank where the mill stands. Assignment of a m. in Deninthley [p. Ruabon, co. Denb.] called The Farme (24 a.) and a parcel of land called Tyerhurrell or Tyercoed (16 a.) in man. Fabrorum Christioneth, together with three parcels of land called Isky and two parcels of land called Yerowstreet in Deninthley, all part of lps Bromfilde and Yale. Consideration: £578.10.0 paid by 2 towards the satisfaction of the debts of Cornelius Manley of Erbistocke, co. Denb. Recites that the said Cornelius Manley devised and bequeathed his lands, etc., to 1 in trust to convey them to the uses expressed in an agreement between Cornelius Manley and 2 concerning a marriage to be had between Francis, son and heir apparent of Cornelius Manley, and Elizabeth, daughter of 2. Agreed therein that if the marriage did not take effect then what should be needed to satisfy the debts of Cornelius Manley should be supplied to his executor (2) out of Cornelius Manley's leased lands.
