The Law and the Press,

Printed materials, typescript memoranda and discussion papers on Labour Party policies on the press and the legal system. Includes copies of It's Time to get Britain Working Again (the Labour Party's general election manifesto, April 1992) and of Meet the Challenge, Meet the Change, the final report of Labour's Policy Review for the 1990s.

South Africa,

Most of the material relates to the issue of human rights in South Africa, including several of the publications of Amnesty International and the African National Congress. Some of the papers relate to the preparations for a visit to South Africa by John Morris during October and November 1991.

Legal aid,

Printed and typescript materials concerning eligibility for civil legal aid, the response of the bar, and cuts in legal aid and proposed reforms in the legal aid funding system.

Carl Bridgewater case,

Copies of letters attempting to overturn the verdict in the Carl Bridgewater case. The Bridgewater Four was the collective name given to the men who were tried and found guilty of killing teenage paper boy Carl Bridgewater ( 1965 -1978). He was shot in the head at close range. After eighteen years their convictions were finally overturned. The case has never been solved.

The Gulf,

Relates mainly to British forces in the Middle East, in countries like Bahrain, Qatar and the Trucial States.

Pensions and benefits,

Relate to the proposal that retirement pensions and other benefits be paid directly into the bank accounts of recipients rather than at local and sub post offices.

Education Bill 1993,

Relate to the 1993 Education Bill which proposed that students at universities and colleges should have the choice over their involvement in the collective actions of their student unions. It also proposed that the use of public money by student unions to specified activities should be limited.

The Labour Party and legal matters,

Relate to the proposals of the Labour Party for improving the justice system, for reducing crime, the proceedings of the Nolan Committee for Standards in Public Life, the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme, the work of the Society of Labour Lawyers and other legal matters.

Local Government Reform,

Papers concerning the proposals during the early 1970s for the reform of local government, especially within Glamorgan and Monmouthshire. There is also the text of a related lecture by Sir Goronwy Daniel entitled 'The Fate of the Rising Generation', delivered at Bangor, December 1971.
