The file comprises a typescript text of the first two chapters of David Blamires's study, David Jones: Artist and Writer (Manchester, 1971), together with a bibliography of works by David Jones and of critical studies of his work. A covering letter from the author is dated 30 Dec. 1966. A few marginal remarks have been added by David Jones to the text, together with a number of items to the bibliography.

The file comprises a notebook containing a manuscript draft of the greater part of Harman Grisewood's annual lecture for 1965 of the BBC in Wales (broadcast in 1966 and published by the BBC, London), 'David Jones, Writer and Artist', together with a sheet of paper containing a copy in David Jones's hand of passages altered by him. There is also a note by Harman Grisewood concerning this item.

The file comprises a typescript copy of an article by Eric Gill entitled 'David Jones', corrected and signed by the author. This article was originally published in Artwork, no. 23 (Autumn 1930), pp. 171-7, and was reprinted in a volume of essays by Eric Gill entitled In a Strange Land (London, 1944), pp. 63-9, and subsequently in Essays by Eric Gill (London, 1947), pp. 147-53.

The file comprises letters to David Jones about the investiture for his CBE, annotated proofs of his entry in 'Debrett's Peerage' and 'Who's Who', a letter from the Imperial War Museum, relating to his gift of In Parenthesis, and a typed copy of 'A priest's prayer'.

Dedication, preface and prologue

The file comprises manuscripts of a dedication (1 f.); a preface numbered by David Jones I-XVI, with an index to the typesetting signs used by him (18 ff.); and a prologue numbered by David Jones 238-9, 247-9, 259-60, 264, 268-9 (11 ff.). There are sketches by David Jones of a girl's face (f. 22v) and of a soldier's face (f. 28v). Also included are notes on the final manuscript draft by Harman Grisewood and Daniel Huws (f. i-iv).

The file comprises 12 small pocket diaries, 1931, 1934, 1939, 1943, 1944, 1947, 1953, 1954, 1955, 1956-1957 (loose pages), 1960 (one page), 1961, 1962, and 1963 noting some lunch appointments and meetings, addresses and phone numbers, with two photographs and other inserts.

Doctors' fees and prescriptions

The file includes prescriptions for medicine and spectacles, 1937-1948, doctors' fees, 1934, 1946-1969, and contributions to Dollis Hill hospital, 1968, with an artists' annuity fund medical certificate for sick members for David Jones, 1936-1937.

Downing Street and Buckingham Palace

The file comprises letters to David Jones, including a typed acknowledgement from Lloyd George, 1910; letters relating to David Jones' Civil List Pension, 1954 and 1967; a letter asking if he will accept the CBE, with a draft acknowledgement, 1955; a letter from the Queen Mother's Lady in Waiting, 1955; a signed letter from Neville Chamberlain relating to In Parenthesis, 1939; and a letter relating to television coverage for Wales from Megan Lloyd George, 1959. There are also invitations to garden parties at Buckingham Palace, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1953, and 1955 with David Jones' draft refusals.

Draft introduction

The file comprises manuscript sheets written for the BBC Welsh Home Service as an Introduction to the production of The Anathemata. It appears to be a draft of LA4/2. There is also a note from Dr Stevenson, of Harley Street, 1952 (f. 1) and notes by Harman Grisewood.

Draft letters

The file comprises miscellaneous manuscript drafts of prose writings (probably all letters). Amongst these drafts is one of part of a letter, probably to The Times, concerning a scheme to establish a military training area somewhere in Wales (1947) and another of part of a letter concerning The Great North Road (1961, see CF2/25). Amongst the subjects discussed or referred to by David Jones in other drafts are 'demythologists' in theology and other fields of study, St Paul, Celtic and Anglo-Saxon art, his mother's drawings, Welsh history and 'The Narrows' (1973).

Charles Edwards, Gwynfor Evans, Peter Orr, Valerie Wynne-Williams, Rachel Bromwich, and others. Many of the drafts are incomplete, many only of the first paragraph of the letter. There are also many letters to editors of newspapers.
