Taylor's Daily Rule,

A manuscript containing 'Taylors Daily Rule in Welsh' rendered by 'Nathanael Jones'.

Nathanael Jones.

The Book of Aneurin,

A transcript of the Book of Aneurin by M. Williams. It is an excellent copy: an effort has been made throughout to exhibit the difficulties and peculiarities of the original, and any errors, which are due chiefly to an inability to distinguish between 'r' and 't', are infrequent. The transcript is signed 'M. Williams, M.A., F.R.S., Dolgelleu, Oct. 15. 1728' and the flyleaf is inscribed 'O hen Lyfr ar Femrwn yn Hengwrt A.D. 1728', which suggests that the original manuscript, from which the text was transcribed, was at the time at Hengwrt.

M. Williams.

The Book of Jaspar Griffith,

The 'book of Jaspar Griffith', containing poetry by Dafydd ap Gwilym, Rhys Fardd, Iolo Goch, Taliesin, Dafydd Llwyd ap Llywelyn ap Gruffudd [Dafydd Llwyd, Mathafarn] and others. Item 1 is a series of complaints between several parties 'fel y maent yn scrifennedic o Law Gyttyn Owein'. Items 2-15, 17-46 contain a series of englynion 'o hen lyfr oedd gyd a S. Trefor Trefalun'. There is a note at item 128 possibly in the hand of Dr John Davies, Mallwyd. A note at Item 201 states: 'Hyn sy yn canlyn a dynnais i allan o'r Llyfr Du o Gaerfyrddin'. The first line of item 264 is given by some as the first line of Item 263, which forms a second half of this cywydd. For Items 266 and 270, where Huw Pennant and Dafydd ab Edmwnt are here given respecitvely as the authors of the works, a later insertion claims authorship as being that of Dafydd Llwyd ap Llywelyn ap Gruffudd (Dafydd Llwyd, Mathafarn).
Jaspar Griffith at one time had in his care or possession Peniarth MSS 1 and 53, both of which are largely copied in this manuscript. The style of the handwriting resembles certain of Griffith's marginalia in Peniarth 1 and 53 so it is inferred that this manuscript is also in his hand. The paper used for this manuscript was originally designed for what looks like a Latin vocabulary; however, one line only was written at the top (now the bottom, inverted) of the page. Items 159-172 are as in Peniarth MS 53 (pp. 1-29, 34) but more complete here. Cf. Peniarth MS 50 (pp. 222b-236, 304). Items 175, 176, 177, 180, 181, 182, 183, 190 occur also on pp. 15, 54, 112, 88, 91, 126, 99, 68 respectively of Peniarth MS 53. The text at items 203-236, 271-274 corresponds with Peniarth MS 1. Inserted at Item 237 is a transcript 'verbatim out of a printed book now supposed to be in the custody ... of Hugh Bevan ... of Llanwnen', which describes the 'Characters' of the gentry of Cardiganshire, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire during the Protectorate. The note is signed 'O. P. Maridunensis'.

[Jaspar Griffith].

The Bruts, genealogical tables and pedigrees,

A manuscript containing the Bruts (pp. 67-203, 213-292); genealogical tables (pp. 6-66); pedigrees (pp. 293-350); &c. The text is bi-columnar in several styles of writing and in different shades of ink but by one hand, probably that of Owain Gwynedd, except for pp. 138-139, which are in a later hand, possibly that of Robert Vaughan, Hengwrt. Place names written in the margins at pp. 333-336, 340, 342-343 may be in the hand of Robert Vaughan, Hengwrt. The volume has a label on the front cover in the same hand as most of the Peniarth Manuscripts and is numbered '3'.
Cf. Aneurin Owen's Catalogue of the Dwning MSS No. 3. This manuscript is described in the Bruts (Oxford, 1890) as 'Mr. Egerton Phillimore's Folio MS'. The text beginning at p. 67 agrees with that of Peniarth MS 212 (= Hengwrt MS 319). For the text beginning at p. 213 see Bruts, p. 349.

Owain Gwynedd and [?Robert Vaughan].

The Burial of Arthur, Æsop's fables, &c.

A manuscript containing The Burial of Arthur (ff. 505-508), Æsop's Fables (ff. 509-521), the Lives of St David and St Beuno (ff. 522-525b, 528-541), the Purgatory of Patrick (ff. 542-557), etc.
There is a lacuna between ff. 507b and 508. The text of 'Buchedd Dewi' is the same as that printed in Llyvyr agkyr Llandewivrevi, pp. 106, l. 4 to 113, l. 28 and pp. 114, l. 28 to 118, l. 22. The text of 'Buchedd Beuno' is the same as that printed in Llyvyr Agkyr Llandewivrevi, p. 119, l. 23 to p. 127. One folio is missing near the beginning of the text of Breudwyd Pawl which differs from that in Llyvyr agkyr Llandewivrevi. The text of 'Purdan Padric' is practically the same as that printed by Canon Robert Williams (from Peniarth MS 5), but wanting p. 194, l. 31 to p. 196, l. 27, p. 201, l. 14 to p. 205, l. 3 and p. 209, l. 29 to p. 211. The writing resembles that of much of the Red Books of Hergest and Talgarth. The manuscript is a continuation of 'Didrefn Gasgliad' Vols I-III.

The Burial of Arthur, Travels of Odoricus, &c.

A manuscript containing The Burial of Arthur (pp. 206-233), The Travels of Odoricus (pp. 234-277), The Seven Wise Men of Rome (pp. 278-319), The Gospel of Nicodemus (pp. 320-343), theological tracts, etc. (pp. 344-407). For The Seven Wise Men of Rome see also the Red Book of Hergest, col. 555.
The text of the Gospel of Nicodemus is very brief and seems to follow the 'Latin Gospel of Nicodemus' (see Tischendorf & Harris Cowper's editions of the Apocryphal Gospels). The text beginning at p. 350 breaks off in the middle of a commentary on the tenth commandment and the remainder of the text is lost. The Commandments are given in Latin and Welsh, and the commentary upon them is extensive. This manuscript is a continuation of 'Didrefn Gasgliad Vol. I'.

The 'Demetian Code' of Welsh laws

A manuscript containing the 'Demetian Code' of Welsh laws.
The text seems to follow pretty closely the text of the Ancient Laws and Institutes of Wales (Vol. i, pp. 408, xv-590, l. 2).

The Gododdin, &c.

Two volumes of transcripts, [1758], compiled Evan Evans (Ieuan Fardd), subsequently bound as one volume. Part I (foliated 1-153) contains 'The Gododin an Heroic poem of the sixth Century transcribed from a Copy of Thomas Wiliams of Trefriw M.D., and the Works of Taliessin from Dr Davies of Mallwyd's hand, and other particulars wrote by the Revd Mr. Evan Evans' (f. 1) and includes transcripts of Llyfr Aneirin (ff. 5 verso-36), Llyfr Taliesin (ff. 37-126) and other manuscripts.
Part II (foliated 1-73) contains further poetry, by poets including Llywarch Hen, Iolo Goch, Dafydd ab Edmwnd and Gutun Owain (ff. 1-28, 34 verso-47); notes on Welsh orthography (following the cywydd beginning at f. 19); a list of poets from a manuscript of Dr John Davies (f. 39 verso); a copy of Sir Thomas Wiliems's Preface to his Latin-Welsh Dictionary (ff. 48-64); a letter, dated 26 January 1757, from Lewis Morris to 'Mr. Vaughan of Corsygedol' (ff. 65-69); a letter, dated 14 June 1755, from Richard Morris to the same Mr Vaughan, enclosing a copy of the Transactions of the Society of Cymmrodorion and referring to Lewis Morris and to Goronwy Owen (ff. 70-71); and a table of contents for Part I only, [?in the hand of Owain Myfyr] (f. 72).

The Laws of Hywel Dda,

A manuscript containing the laws of Hywel Dda in Welsh. A note in the hand of Moses Williams reads as follows: 'The original MS. (Bibl: Cott: Titus D. IX) whence this was copy'd from was lost in the fire A.D. 1731. So this is the only perfect Copy of this class'.

The Life of Griffith ap Kynan,

A manuscript containing the Life of Griffith ap Kynan in Welsh and Latin (original foliation 1-40); and the Burial of Arthur (original foliation 45-52). Ff. 1-52 (original foliation) are written on one side only. The text of the Life of Griffith ap Kynan is complete, and agrees practically with that printed in the Myvyrian Archaiology. It is followed (original foliation 1-43) by a Latinised version entitled 'Vita Griffini Regis Venedotiæ a Thelwello juris perito in Latinum conversa' - against which is written in the margin: 'dele in Codice Sebright' - with, below, the title 'Vita Griffini Filij Conani Regis Venedotiæ' - against which is written 'In Latinum tradita per Nicholas Robinson episcopum Bangoriensem [1566-1584] - Cod[ice] Seb[right]' (cf. John Davies, Display of Heraldry (Salop, 1716), p. 11). Cf. Peniarth MSS 17, 267, 276 and Panton MS 26.

The Mabinogion, &c.,

A manuscript containing the Mabinogion (pp. 1-64); the Dream of Maxen Wledic (p. 65); the Adventure of Llvdd and Llevelys (p. 74); and the History of Kulhwch and Olwen (pp. 81-120).
The text was transcribed from the Red Book of Hergest and collated by Moses Williams.

Moses Williams.

The Pedigree of the Saints,

A manuscript in the hand of Moses Williams containing a pedigree of the saints.
The text beginning at p. 13 is copied from Bib. Harleian MS 95 A. 16; the text beginning at p. 21 is copied from Jesus College MS 3, p. 34.

Moses Williams.

The poetical works of Edward ap Raff,

The poetical works of Edward ap Raff in the hand of Ifan ap John of Scorlegan [or Richard ap John according to the online Dictionary of National Biography (under heading for Richard ap John of Scorlegan)]. Many of the poems are dated. Pp. 1-2 contain poetry by Ieuan Tew Brydydd and Hywel ap Dafydd ab Ieuan ap Rhys.

Ifan ap John.

The poetical works of Lewis Glyn Cothi and Tudur Aled,

A manuscript containing the poetical works of Lewis Glyn Cothi, Tudur Aled, Tudur Penllyn, Sion Cent, Ieuan ap Tudur Penllyn, Rhys Cain and others. There is some controversy as to whether f. 137 contains work by Llewelyn ab Ieuan or by Deio ab Ieuan Du. The volume is labelled 'Odlau a Chywydda. A. 4°'.
Ff. i-ii, 137-143b are not in the same hand as the rest of the manuscript, and ff. 144b-146 are in a modern hand. Ff. 1-56 may be copied from Peniarth MS 109; the order of the poems is the same at first, but the readings do not always agree, and there are four poems in this manuscript which are not in Peniarth MS 109. Pp. 11-96 of Peniarth MS 77 are copied from this manuscript. William Salesbury or Sir T. Wiliems has written what looks like 'rhyderch ap Howel ap Dauyd' on f. 136b.

The poetrical works of Lewis Glyn Cothi, Ieuan Brechfa and others

A manuscript containing poetry of Lewis Glyn Cothi, Ieuan Brechfa and other poets, written in several hands of the early and mid sixteenth century.
Hands A (pp. 1-40, 351-2), B (pp. 41-102, 151-8, 297-332), and Bb (pp. 271-96, 333-50, 353-64) belong to the first quarter of the sixteenth century, while Hand C (pp. 103-50, 159-247, 250-59, 262-70) belongs, apparently, to the second quarter. Other folios contain other somewhat later hands. Hand B uses 'ρ' for 'dd' throughout, while hand Bb uses 'dd' mostly (cf Peniarth MS 70). Pp. 351-2 are in a different hand and misplaced in the manuscript. The ends of some lines of text are wanting, though some of them have been completed by a later hand. Neither the beginning nor the end of the cywydd on p. 158 is legible and its lines were evidently never all complete.

The works of Aneirin and Taliesin,

A manuscript containing, in excellent script by William Owen-Pughe, the works of Aneirin and Taliesin, etc. At the beginning of the volume are sketches of human faces, followed by notes on 'Gafis' and 'Deffrobani' and on the Irish alphabet, and a title page headed 'o Gasgliad Huw Morus, Tuddyn Tudur, 1796' (pp. i-2). The text also includes introductions to Aneirin and Taliesin (pp. 7, 63).
There is no evidence that this manuscript was used for the Myvyrian Archaiology of Wales.

William Owen-Pughe.

Theological tracts, &c.

A manuscript containing theological tracts (pp. 408-435), Yspryt Guido Ar Prior (pp. 436-471), Kerdwriaeth Kerd Davawd and Trioed Kerd (pp. 472-504).
The first folio is rubbed, stained and mostly illegible. The text of pp. 408-421, l.8 is practically identical with that published in Llyvyr Agkyr Llanwivrevi (Oxford, 1894), pp. 141-51, l. 3, but wanting the text on p. 144, l. 21 to p. 148, l. 26. The ending of Trioed Kerd is illegible. This manuscript is a continuation of 'Didrefn Gasgliad' Vols I & II.

Theological tracts, &c.,

A manuscript, unusually well written for the time, containing theological tracts (pp. 1-5, 1-8); the Dialogue between Guido and the Prior (pp. 9-35); and the Gospel of Nicodemus (pp. 36-44).

Theological tracts, poetry, &c.,

A manuscript written c. 1556 (see p. 184) containing triads (pp. 1-6); theological tracts (pp. 7-8, 26-42, 142-146, 152, 154, 167); a calendar (pp. 43-64); poetry (pp. 9-25, 65-141, 147, 149); etc. The poets cited include Taliesin, Iolo Goch, Siôn Cent and Dafydd Gorlech.
