The series comprises papers, 1955-1961, concerning the death of Thomas Jones in October 1955, his memorial service, letters and messages of sympathy received by his family, early plans to publish a biography, 1955-1956, and correspondence and papers, 1955-1961, concerning the administration of the Thomas Jones Memorial Fund.

Death of Thomas Jones

The file consists of miscellaneous correspondence and papers, 1955-1956, relating to the death and the administration of the estate of Dr Thomas Jones. These include copies of obituaries and tributes published in newspapers and journals, estate accounts, preliminary plans for his memorial service and the Thomas Jones Memorial Fund, and various ideas for projects to commemorate his life and work.

Diaries and notebooks

The series comprises Thomas Jones's pocket diaries, 1923-1953, bearing mainly notes of appointments, engagements and other miscellaneous notes and minutiae; an address book, [1935]-[1955], kept on behalf of Thomas Jones; his pocket notebooks, [1900]-[1955]; and typescript texts of his full diaries, 1916-1930 and 1942, clearly prepared in readiness for the publication of Whitehall Diaries.

Diary collection,

Nos 1-87. Correspondence, memoranda and papers forming a Diary collection. Nos 84-86 are undated papers. No. 87 is a notebook with lists of visitors at Cliveden and some notes on the 'Cliveden Set'.

Diary material,

A collection of material made by Thomas Jones towards his printed Diary, consisting of letters, memoranda, cuttings and journal entries. Many papers are type-written duplicates of letters and memos which may be found in various classes of the collection, but some are original. They are frequently annotated and embellished with printer's directions, evidently for both the unpublished Diaries printed in Switzerland and the selection (post-1930) which was published in A Diary with Letters. They cover a great range of topics, though political events predominate. No index of individuals is provided. Group 1 comprises a substantial corpus of correspondence and papers relating to Prime Ministers, government and society, education, foreign affairs, imperial affairs, Ireland, Wales, Coleg Harlech and the Gregynog Press. There are also classes concerning the Astor family, Abraham Flexner, Violet Markham, Sir Henry Jones and Sir Percy Watkins.
