Vivian [Lewis], Lord Brecon, Minister of State for Welsh Affairs, Cathays Park, Cardiff. Huw T. Edwards's forecast of the outcome of the Sunday Opening ballot was nearer the mark than that of the writer, and so he encloses £1 to settle his debts. Hopes that Huw T. Edwards will use the money wisely.

Vivian [Lewis], Lord Brecon, Minister of State for Welsh Affairs, Cathays Park, Cardiff. Is grateful to Huw T. Edwards for writing. Has recovered and feels no ill effects. Looks forward to seeing Huw T. Edwards at Aberystwyth on 4 April, and hopes that the Conference will be a success. Will be very pleased to arrange a meeting with Huw T. Edwards.

Vivian [Lewis], Lord Brecon, Minister of State for Welsh Affairs, Welsh Office, Cathays Park, Cardiff. Agrees that the Wales Celebration Bill was a great success, and feels sure that Mr David Cole can take a pride on successfully starting what will be a very happy annual occasion. Was delighted to see Huw T. Edwards there looking so well and prosperous.

W. A. Meredith, Paris House, Dolgelley. He and his wife have much enjoyed reading Tros y Tresi. It is one of the best things he has ever read to explain 'true Socialism'. Realises that writing the volume required a great deal of effort. Is glad that Huw T. Edwards's health is improved. The writer realises that he will never see a Liberal government again, but a Labour government is certainly in prospect, and perhaps earlier than anticipated. Welsh.

W. C. Ibbett, National Agricultural Advisory Service (Wales), Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Trawscoed, Aberystwyth. Has made a local survey of the potential use of Welsh peat for horticultural purposes and has analysed certain samples of peat from the locality. Discusses the possible uses of peat and thinks that further research would be useful. The Department would be pleased to help, but does not have the resources to undertake a systematic survey of the whole of Wales.

W. E. Jones ['ap Gerallt'], Gwalia, New Road, Newtown. Was sorry to have missed Huw T. Edwards at the eisteddfod, and he had to return home before Huw T. Edwards announced the splendid news. The writer, too, has long since despaired of the Labour Party. When he was at Dowlais in the 1930s, he believed that the Labour Party would be true to Wales, but he has been disillusioned. Huw T. Edwards's brave leadership will be an inspiration to the youth of Wales. The writer and his wife collected sixty-four names of children who wished to attend a Welsh medium school in their locality. Further marvels are expected now that the son of the gwerin has given to Plaid Cymru something that it previously lacked. Welsh.

[W.] Emrys [Pride], 4 Mitre Place, Llandaff, Cardiff. Regrets the resignations of Huw T. Edwards and Sir William Jones from the Council for Wales and Monmouthshire. The body was the writer's own creation which he had intended would be a research body and a Treasury Watchdog. But believes that more frequent changes of personnel would be to the good of the Council and other councils. Many well-intentioned people are prepared to assist in the running of voluntary organisations. It might be beneficial to have a Minister as Chairman on a temporary basis. Considers Henry Brooke to be 'a man of decent principles'.

[W.] Emrys [Pride], Engineering Consultant, Surveys in Industry, Harlow Lodge, Llandaff, Cardiff. Would like Huw T. Edwards to see a copy of his letter to TWW, and, if possible, 'to help to prevent any future wounding of this great valley and its people. The penetration of TV is so deep and wounding'.

[W.] Emrys [Pride], Members' Room, City Hall, Cardiff. Would be glad if the young engineer would call with them while at Cardiff. Gives the academic record of his young son, Huw Rhidian. Gives details of the work of his own research team. 'Each stayed in College; while I went on to the Home Office to play for safety. There were 4 of us children at the University together & Dad had a big struggle'. Comments on the 'gauche' headed notepaper. Recalls his experiences working for Edmund Davies QC who used to take him to the compensation cases for the SWMF and AEU. The new university buildings and hostels are growing; the writer is giving a hand as Chairman of the Working Party, working with Percy Thomas and the various professors. Hopes that Huw T. Edwards's work on Y Faner is going well.

W. G[eraint] O. Morgan, MP, House of Commons, London SW1. Does not accept Huw T. Edwards's justification for excluding the writer from English language TV programmes. But if the staff of TWW concur in this view, then he would prefer not to appear in any of their programmes or to give them any interviews or comments. Is sorry that he has bothered Huw T. Edwards, but he had felt that Huw T. Edwards would at least treat his complaint with understanding and sympathy.

W. H. Roberts, 52 Mouthesmen Road, Cardiff. Writes in appreciation of Huw T. Edwards's bravery in turning his back on the party which was so close to his heart for so many years. The writer voted for the Labour Party throughout his life, but did so in order to keep out the Conservatives. Can vote for Plaid Cymru at the next election. Welsh.

W. Hugh Jones, Clerk to the Flintshire County Council, County Buildings, Mold. As he has resolved to sever his connections with the Labour Party, he feels obliged to resign his position as Alderman of Flintshire County Council and, at the same time, his membership of the numerous committees and bodies upon which he represented the County Council. This is a difficult step to take as he has very much enjoyed playing a role in the manifold activities of the Council. During a long period of membership, he has received nothing but the utmost kindness from all parts of the Council Chamber. He is really saddened to part from the staff of the Council. He wishes to thank all the staff for many services and for their kindness and courtesy. The recipient should communicate the contents of this letter to all the heads of the departments, including the Director of Education.

W. Hugh Jones, solicitor, Clerk of the Flintshire County Council, County Buildings, Mold. Thanks for Huw T. Edwards's letter of 11 August giving notice of his resignation from the County Council. Realises that this decision has not been an easy one for Huw T. Edwards, and that his departure will leave a great void on the Council. He will, of course, convey Huw T. Edwards's thanks to the council staff. The writer has always felt very proud of Huw T. Edwards's association with the county of Flintshire. Knows that Huw T. Edwards will serve the Welsh nation well in future.

W. J. and A. M. Griffiths, T Gwalia, 10 Springfield Terrace, Aberafon. Warmest greetings! The writer's heart warmed when he saw the Western Mail of that day and saw that Donald Box, MP, was one of the babies in the world of politics. Unprincipled, visionless Englishmen have far too much freedom to deal with Welsh affairs. Wishes Huw T. Edwards well in his battle. They have settled down very happily at Aberafon since the end of the previous year. Is working with Graham Jenkins at the office; he sends Huw T. Edwards his best regards. Now has the pleasure of serving the churches on Sundays as preaching is his first love. Hopes that Huw T. Edwards's family is flourishing. Huw T. Edwards should give their regards to Kate Roberts. Hopes that Huw T. Edwards will continue his work on behalf of Wales. Welsh.

W. J. C. Skyrme, Secretary of Commissions, Lord Chancellor's Office, House of Lords, London SW1. The Lord Chancellor wishes to thank Huw T. Edwards for his letter regarding the Constitution of Advisory Committees on Justices of the Peace in Wales. The Lord Chancellor will pay the closest attention to what Huw T. Edwards has to say about the Welsh Nationalist Party.

W. M. Brook, City Housing and Estates Manager, Municipal Offices, Greyfriars Road, Cardiff, to Councillor I. I. Rosen, 7 Churchill Way, Cardiff. Has received the recipient's letter of 25 October to the City Surveyor about Mr Conlon of 20 Fern Place, Fairwater. The land in question is well-known to the department and has been inspected. The City Architect states that it is not possible for fencing to be erected (as suggested by the tenant), and this may affect the future planning of Fern Place when the pre-fabricated bungalows are demolished. Suggests that, if the tenant is not satisfied, he should make a request for a transfer to another district.
