Edwards for his service as a part-time member of the Wales Gas Board as his term of office ends on 31 August 1956. Realises that the contribution made by part-time members of Public Boards requires much time and effort on their part. Hopes that Huw T. Arthur Williams, Branas, Criccieth. Had meant to write to Huw T. Edwards for some time. Huw T. Edwards met the brother Dr O. Lewis Jones, Criccieth, when he was at Patagonia some time ago. Many friends there including Mr W.R.P. George and Mr Walford feel that some small honour should be awarded to Dr O. Lewis Jones, perhaps the OBE or the MBE. Details were given to the local MP some time ago. But many local friends felt that an approach should also be made to Huw T. Edwards as he is a man of influence throughout Wales. Encloses a few details about Dr Jones and a press cutting (A1/922a). The writer should have noted that he was a lay preacher. Hopes that Huw T. Edwards will forgive him for writing to him as he knows that he is very busy. Welsh.

Arthur Thomas, Tegfan, Llanfair Caereinion. Wishes to congratulate Huw T. Edwards on the brave step which he has taken in resigning from the Chairmanship of the Council of Wales and Monmouthshire. Is wholly convinced that Huw T. Edwards's action was the most appropriate step, and everyone whom he has talked to agrees. There is growing dissatisfaction with the way Wales is being treated by London. Hopes that Huw T. Edwards's action will bear fruit. Welsh.

Arthur Moyle, MP, PPS to the Prime Minister, House of Commons, London. He was delighted to read in the press of the recipient's promotion to be Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Prime Minister. Considers this to be a very well deserved honour; all of his old friends in North Wales are delighted as is Huw T. Edwards and the people of Llanidloes. They are all very proud of the work of the Labour Party within the House of Commons, and the writer believes that the propaganda work of the Tory press is making no impression. There is general confidence in the Labour Government. They do hope that the recipient will be blessed with good health to execute his duties, and they will, of course, be delighted to hear of any further promotion in the future. 'You have now definitely got your feet on the steps of the promotion ladder'. 'Personal' For reply see A1/10.

Archie [Lush], 5 Gladstone Place, Tredegar, Monmouthshire. Thanks recipient for the copies of Y Faner and for the article and the poem by Ronald Griffiths. Although he had been expecting Aneurin Bevan's death for some time, there was 'an awful finality' about the end. It will take him some time to adjust himself to his death. While Bevan was alive, the writer never knew what lay ahead. Now has to make a statement about his own future. 'The prospect of Westminster never appealed to me. It's such an unreal world! And the Labour Party!! I suppose I shall always be 'political' but I wish I could find a real crusade and real comradeship in a struggle'.

Anthony Bevin, 10 Downing Street, Whitehall. Writes on behalf of the Prime Minister in response to Huw T. Edwards's letter relating to a Civil List Pension for Mr J. W. Jones and Mr R. Williams Parry. Discusses the unsuccessful outcome of the two applications. The Prime Minister has, however, authorised the payment to RWP of a lump sum grant of £300 from certain confidential funds, but the matter must be kept strictly confidential. 'Confidential'.

Anthony Bevin, 10 Downing Street, Whitehall. The New Years Honours. Notes what Huw T. Edwards says about Captain Crawshay. The Prime Minister will consider the record of Alderman Mars Jones. The claim of Mr Clayton Russon; he received the OBE only in 1952, and it is customary to allow some years to elapse before conferring a further honour. 'Confidential'.

Anthony Bacon, 10 Downing Street, Whitehall. Is grateful to Huw T. Edwards for sacrificing his time recently. Neither the Pilgrim Trust nor the Royal Literary Fund can help. Mr Jones is certainly a worthy recipient of some assistance. In the old days private patrons could have been approached in a case such as this. Promises not to forget Jones's plight. 'Confidential'.

Aneurin [Bevan], Ministry of Health, Whitehall, London SW1. Was unhappy that Zilliacus was not heard at the Conference, but this was the decision of the Conference and not the Executive. He was also unhappy about Sam's references and the reasons which he gave for the expulsion of Zilliacus. But the writer agreed that Zilliacus had to go because of his close association with the enemies of the Labour Party and Social Democracy. He had no right to claim to be the representative of the Labour Party. Zilliacus had consistently broken decisions which had been democratically arrived at. The writer sincerely hopes that Huw T. Edwards can agree with these views. 'Private & Confidential'.
