J. R. [Jones], The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, Hong Kong. Has an old earthenware pot at Bridgend given to him thirty-five years previously by an old ship's captain at Shanghai with an inscription. Owes a big debt to Huw T. Edwards, and it is ever increasing. Had intended writing to Huw T. Edwards before this to express his gratitude for the welcome and company at Rhos and Llangollen. Thanks for the notes on the eisteddfod. Few Welsh people come out to Hong Kong. Thanks for Huw T. Edwards's company at Rhos and Llangollen. Would like to return to Wales to enjoy the company of Huw T. Edwards, T. Mervyn Jones and Trefin. Most of his contemporaries have died. The eisteddfod would be empty for the writer without the company of Huw T. Edwards and Mervyn. Has been marvelling at Huw T. Edwards's poem. Huw T. Edwards is a diplomat of the first rank; Wales could not hope for a better Prime Minister or Foreign Secretary. News of the Lee family. Best wishes for Christmas and the New Year. Welsh.

[ ], The Times, The Times Publishing Company Limited, Printing House Square, London EC4. As Peter Evans of Cardiff will have informed Huw T. Edwards, The Times is to publish a special survey of Welsh Life and Industry as a Special Supplement on 31 January 1962. A number of social and political themes are to be discussed in the feature. Is writing to confirm the arrangement that Huw T. Edwards has agreed to write an article on tourism in Wales. This has been planned as an article of 750 words, and he is delighted that Huw T. Edwards is prepared to write it. Could the writer receive it by 15 January? Would prefer this contribution to bear the author's name, but it could appear as the work of 'A Special Correspondent'. Is prepared to pay a fee higher than the norm because of the short notice given to the author. Would be grateful to borrow any photographs which Huw T. Edwards might wish to use in illustrating the article, or any suggestions as to the sources of suitable pictures. Incomplete.

[ ], Colwyn Bay and WD Hospital, Colwyn Bay. Is resigning from her post as the matron of the hospital. Has been very happy in this post, and will miss her work and her friends very much. But, as she reaches retirement age at the end of May, she wishes to leave the hospital at the end of June 1962 to make way for a younger person. Is most grateful to Huw T. Edwards for all the help, kindness and consideration which he has always given her.

[ ], House of Commons, London SW1. Finds what Huw T. Edwards has to say very sad, but realises that he himself has no business to criticise. The writer is an old colleague of Huw T. Edwards's who has a tremendous regard for him. Thought that Huw T. Edwards's reference to the leadership and to the writer were very sad. But is grateful to him for writing.

Emrys [Roberts], Organising Secretary, Plaid Cymru, 8 Queen Street, Cardiff. He had meant to write to Huw T. Edwards many times ever since the talk on the radio. Would have liked a full conversation with Huw T. Edwards in preference to a few minutes on the air which are always inadequate to voice an opinion properly. Personally, he does not believe that political methods are the route to self-government. On the other hand, government is a political matter, and the work of transferring the reins of government to Wales would be a political act. There is a need for a political party. Advocated that the Welsh Labour MPs should establish a Welsh Labour Party - totally independent of the English Labour Party. Cannot really see this ever happening. It is the threat of Plaid Cymru winning votes from the other political parties that compels them to give consideration to Wales. This would be lost if Plaid Cymru called a halt to contesting parliamentary elections. Plaid Cymru has no political organisation, and the writer is convinced that such an organisation would bring political rewards. Is unclear what exactly are Huw T. Edwards's views on this matter. Would like to discuss these matters with Huw T. Edwards, but there would probably be no time at the Eisteddfod or the Summer School. Perhaps they could have a discussion when Huw T. Edwards is next at Cardiff. Welsh.

Lowena Davies, Cwrtycadno, Carmarthenshire. Is very much enjoying reading the book. What about the chair at next year's National Eisteddfod? Gives quotations from Huw T. Edwards's poems which have appealed to her particularly. Is spending September in a cottage in the mountains of Carmarthenshire. Is doing some preparatory reading for the next academic year at Oxford. Everyone in the area speaks the Welsh language which is most gratifying. Welsh.

Saunders Lewis, 158 Westbourne Road, Penarth. Thanks for the gift of Ar y Cyd and for the inscription in the author's own hand. Realises that writing poetry was the second string to Huw T. Edwards's bow until recently, but it is evident from this most recent volume that he has really broken through. Comments on the poems which appeal to him particularly, and notes changes which ought to be made in the second edition. Does Huw T. Edwards have any influence on the leaders of Plaid Cymru? The writer pleaded with Gwynfor Evans to make an especial appeal using all the resources of the party to win the election, but he was ignored. Plaid Cymru totally lacks flair, and has no aptitude for effective political action. Dedication towards being a parliamentary party and contesting all the seats in Wales are synonymous with failure. Home rule will never be won by voting in a general election. All the efforts of Plaid Cymru are child's play. Is much embittered by what he sees. The Plaid Cymru of today is a party which is simply fooling itself. Welsh.

Gwynfor [Evans], Talar Wen, Llangadog. Will Huw T. Edwards have an opportunity of discussing that day's issue of the Western Mail with David Cole? There was a rally at Llandovery on Saturday. It was an opportunity to place Plaid Cymru policies before the nation at the time that the other parties are holding their annual conferences. About a thousand people came there from all parts of Wales. It was a truly national event. But there was not a single reference to it in the Western Mail. Other recent events of political interest have been noted in the paper, but not one word about Plaid Cymru. It is serious enough to justify a complaint to the Press Council. The situation with the press generally is serious. Not one of the London papers referred to Tryweryn. The advisers to the government suggest that Huw T. Edwards is leading a movement of those who advocate direct action, and that this movement could take over Plaid Cymru. During its coverage of the recent Montgomeryshire by-election, the Liverpool Post gave not a single reference to Plaid Cymru or to the name of its candidate Islwyn Ffowc Elis. Much the same is true of the BBC and of the independent television companies. They devote lengthy reports to the conferences of the other parties, but next to nothing to the Plaid Cymru conference. The long reports and programmes from England are broadcast on the Welsh Home Service. This is a responsibility for the BBC and the independent television companies. Plaid Cymru is, therefore, suffering a great unfairness as the media are all-important in political life. Plaid Cymru is suffering from an injustice which can truthfully be called oppression. Welsh.

Elwyn [Roberts], Organising Secretary of Plaid Cymru, High Street, Bangor. Discusses the cases of Owen Williams and John Albert Jones. The press did not give any attention to Huw T. Edwards's willingness to support the boys, although they were informed of this. But understands that TWW did refer to it. It would help the cause a great deal if Huw T. Edwards could come to Blaenau in May. It is important for the two boys to receive the backing of eminent people. Welsh.

Blaise Gillie, Welsh Office, Ministry of Housing and Local Government, Cathays Park, Cardiff. Will do his best for Mrs Gwyneth Williams. She has been very good in relation to the visit to Merthyr of Sir Keith Joseph. Is unsure whether he will be going, but it is likely. Is sorry to leave Wales, but a new spirit in the place will do some good. Welsh.

Olwen [ ], 8 Kenilworth House, Castle Court, Cardiff. Is terribly upset about the news of Teledu Cymru. Feels truly sorry for the boys who trusted this television company simply because of their love of Wales, and now they have lost so much as a result. Could Huw T. Edwards do his best to help secure posts for these boys? Realises that there is a shortage of ready money, and that things are more difficult than they used to be.

Glyn [ ], 8 Thompson Avenue, Victoria Park, Cardiff. Thanks for the enormous favour. The numerous letters and telephone calls which he has received. Huw T. Edwards's generosity is most acceptable and a life-line in the writer's difficult circumstances. Blames no-one but himself that they abandoned the safe haven provided by the BBC. Had really enjoyed the work making the English programmes. Recounts recent events at work and in his personal life. He still feels optimistic and hopes that he may secure a post with the BBC. If not, he will move up to North Wales and earn his living as a journalist. Regrets that he has not kept secret Huw T. Edwards's great service to him. Welsh.

Goronwy [Roberts], MP, House of Commons, London SW1. There is a need for them to have a general conversation. Could Huw T. Edwards let him know when he will next be in London? The Welsh High Committee will discuss the Welsh tourist industry the following Wednesday. Will Huw T. Edwards be in London then? Welsh.

Ernest Bevin, General Secretary of the Transport and General Workers' Union, 3 Central Buildings, Westminster, London SW1, to J. W. Williams, Area no. 13. This letter is of considerable significance as it concerns the miners' return to work following the lock-out of May 1926. There are references to the proposed embargo on the transportation of coal, the danger of victimisation by the coal owners following the return to work and relations between the miners and the rest of the trades union movement.
